"It was just an old hand-me-down Ford......"
"It was just an old hand-me-down Ford
With a three-speed on the column and a dent in the door
A young boy, two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel...."

Alan Jackson was talking about driving in general, but he also perfectly describes how you feel about your FIRST car!!!  We all grow up thinking and dreaming of what we want that car to be, but the reality is....once you hit 16 and have that license in hand it doesn't really matter.   Used or brand new  --  hand-me-down  --  shiny and polished or dented and rusted .....for a teenager with their first taste of "freedom" all that matters is that it has four wheels and it gets you where you want to go....

When you got your first car did you get your "dream" car or were you just happy with whatever clunker you could get your hands on?

1987 Ford F-250. The damn thing had more rust  holes in it then it had paint. The speedometer and radio didn't work, but by-god it was mine and it never left me stranded. I almost miss that truck

I bought my first car just after I turned 19. It was a brand spankin (well it had 11 miles on it) new Honda Civic. Parents had to co-sign the loan for it and it took me just over 4 years (4 hard working years) to pay it off. Before then, it was borrowing mom's car, hitching rides with friends, or my bike.

My first car was a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass... with no reverse. I remember having to push that car backwards to get out of parking spots, hoping that i could park on a hill so that i could coast backwards. Sometimes if the transmission was in a good mood, it would let me go in reverse, but that was after 30 seconds of reving up the engine while simultaniously keeping my foot on the brake so that i didnt go flying back if it decided to kick in. Also, the hi beams were stuck on so people would always flip me off and give me dirty looks when i drove at night. It was the best of times...it was the worst of times.

1981 Mercury LN-7. It was pretty cute actually, and it ran great. I only had it for a few months though; it was rear wheel drive and we had one of the worst snowfalls that winter. That turned me off of it and I inherited a 4wd after that.

My parents gave me my first car in 1977...a 1975 Toyota Corolla SR5...5-speed, on the floor.  Second car also came courtesy of the folks in 1979...a 1977 Toyta Celica GT hatchback...cool car...gray with a white racing stripe and black pinstripe, also a 5-speed.  Finally started being a bit of a grown-up when I bought my first car on my own...a 1985 Nissan Sentra...the one and only brand new car I've ever owned. Have a 1999 Honda CRV now...paid for...will drive it 'til it doesn't want to be driven any more.

I saved up to buy myself a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Chief (yeah, they haven't even made that specific model in years).  It was such a piece of crap on 4 wheels, it's not even funny.

It was an automatic, but I felt like I was driving a stick-shift half the time since I had to throw it into neutral when I braked to prevent stalling out, and had to shift gears occassionally while driving because they'd slip now and then.  You couldn't unlock the driver side door, so I'd have to unlock the passenger side then climb over to the driver's side to actually, you know, DRIVE.  On hot and humid days, the glass over the speedometer/odometer/etc. would actually fog up ... from the inside.

It was such a POS I can't even explain it. Thankfully not long after that I got a decent little truck and ran that thing over 200,000 miles. I loved that Truck.

it was an 89 saab that was more or less the color of an m&m after the shell has been sucked off completely. it was ugly, it smelled bad, it sounded like a 90 year old smoker when it was running, it was a standard and all in all was my absolute favorite car to date.

one of the first times i drove it, it melted my key in the ignition and i had to drive it for the next two years with a screwdriver instead. it ultimately caught on fire while parked on the street. R.I.P. Chester Kurt Vonnegut, II

First of all, great song!  My first car was a 1987 Chevy Nova.

It had over 300K miles on it before I totalled it.  It's actually a pretty funny story.  I was looking at some girls and I didn't see that traffic was stopped in front of me.  I rear ended a mail truck(I had to give the government more $$$) going about 25mph and it was all she wrote.

About 5 minutes later, a car full of my classmates drove by pointing at me and laughing.  I sh*t you not, the driver rear ended a car not even 15 feet from where my accident occurred.  To top it all off, it was New Year's Eve.

Mine was a 64 Plymouth Valiant.  Transmission was push button on the left dash.  Reliable little car.  But was not known as a chick magnet.  2nd car was a 67 Plymouth Fury I.  Had a 383 under the hood.  Sucker would haul ass.  Dad got rid of it three months later because we couldn't afford the gas.  Wonder why it couldn't keep gas in it?

Nope, not the only one.  My mother always called our car "Nellie Belle" after the jeep shown on the Roy Roger's Show.

Of course we didn't have a jeep, she just liked the name from the show.

'68 Ford Fairlane - Dad presented it to me with it for Graduation, along with a bill for repairs to make it driveable.  I gave him a cheque for the repairs and for my birthday a month later, he gave me my cheque back, uncashed.  It was awesome and is still alive, although the guy who bought it only drives it in the summer time and mostly to car shows.

My first was an 1981 Oldsmobile Delta 88... it had been my mom's,  it was powder-blue, and what we would call a "hoopity" back in those days. I wrecked it in nine days... took a left turn and got smashed by a rather large truck (think it may have been a cement truck) in downtown Lithonia, Georgia.

Then I got to drive my dad's old car... even better... a 1979 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser (station wagon)... definitely no chick magnet; however, all that room in the back of station wagon, well... Despite the looks, that thing would haul ass; it was a 477 cubic inch (I think 6.7L) V8 and although the speedometer only went up to 85, my friend buried his needle at 130 following me one day...

I subsequently owned an 1985 Buick Regal, an 1988 Pontiac Grand Am (turbo-- only year they made those-- also dangerous), and a 1987 Acura Integra before skipping the 1990s altogether to get my current car, a 2001 Ford Escort... say what you will, but it runs well, has had almost zero problems and is long ago paid for.
