It is a long stretch until the Next Break
From January 1st until May 20 something is a long stretch, like almost 5 months. It is hard to believe that from Thanksgiving until NewYears about 5 1/2 weeks, you get on average 3 days off, but from New Years until Memorial Day you get none. THis is not true if you work in a School System, in the Banking Business or Federal Government.

My question to all you wonderful members of the Q, is how do you handle this challenging stretch?

I do seem to get mysterious illnesses that only last for a day or two, when I don't want to go to work.

I'm in charge of myself at work, so I can take vacations / timeoff whenever I want, but I have to make up the work at another time before deadline.

Cabin getaway in 3 weeks. End of March free trip to St. thomas (won on the radio). probably biloxi in May for deep sea fishing. Bday in June. In other words, I will take a day off here and there. I use my PTO because I cant take it with me and mental health days are mandatory when working in a hospital.

Only work partime right now, so money is tight. But I'll treat myself to a 1 -2 day trip to NY or Philly, staying at a 4/5 star hotel, touring, shopping, soaking up some jazz.. Scheduled around a particular jazz performance I want to see.

i'm on salary at a church where everything is by the honor system. no clocking in, out, requesting off...i abuse that system mercilessly

in my defense, i wouldn't abuse it if they would just grow a set and call me out on it once in a while.

I used every excuse until I called in dead, even called in sick of working. Since then I do not work much, but might start getting paid for it. I see dead people. I see names I can bargain with... please leave your social security numbers for future refrences.

So, basically you're abusing your position within the church to take advantage of others' blind faith and trust for your own personal agenda. LOL! Sounds about par for the course if you ask me.

I'm on salary and I get every Friday off.  Also, we close on all Holidays.  I tell my boss when there is the smallest holiday coming up and she lets us have it off.

I don't make up the schedule - the boss's wife does that - and if I ask for any kind of concession for a Dr's, dentist, hair, or any other kind of appointment, it is criticised as asking for "preferential treatment", so I grin and bear it.   And yes, looking for a new job...

Great poll, Ed!

Total Kteacher type...lol I have a three day weekend next weekend, then another the following weekend (thanks to Presidents Day...pretty sure the three day weekend before this one is in honor of Lincoln and Washington too...but not sure). Then I have spring break in April and get a week off. I've also got 7 "sick" days I could sprinkle in somewhere in between, but seriously not worth it since planning for a sub can be a pain in the arse.

Each day is working day, with different works, each day is adjusted to accommodate rest and work is fun, not dredgery, I am my own boss, have a big team of men and women who work, some rest, some have holidays, it is a team game.Team does work on schedule, even before schedule at times.

three of us, currently - one is on leave because of a family illness, so there are normally 4. And no, I'm not the only one, but I'm the only one with kids not yet grown and living at home. I specified when i was hired the days/hours that would work for me BEFORE I agreed to take the job, but that conversation seems to have been forgotten.

Like a boss of mine (a childless boss) telling me that when it comes to scheduling, people without children shouldn't be punished (asked to be flexible on scheduling) for not having children. My reply was, people with children shouldn't be punished (graded down on being a team player) for having children (thereby having less schedule flexibility). Went over like a turd in the punchbowl.

Having kids shouldn't matter, you are allowed so many days off, and whatever attendance policy is in place allows. if it is an issue of taking all the Holidays, most companies like mine have a policy for that too.

the thing I have a problem with is that it was made clear BEFORE I agreed to take the job, and now it is "preferential".  If they weren't prepared to honor my terms, why not say so before hand?  The place is open 7am to 10 pm every day.  I was clear with them that my children will always come first, that the job is only a job, not a life commitment and if they couldn't accept that, I was not prepared to accept the position.  They agreed and now it's a problem.  Go figure

I take off every time the BIG bosses come in from Pennsylvania and Texas to gather some thought and opinions of the employees (aka the 2 hour BS session) which fortunately for me is about ever 3-5 weeks. Which reminds me they will be here in two weeks.
