I know all I need to know about leather-necks, jar-heads, or sailor boot-polishers.

They live by a code of honour.
They give themselves to something greater than themselves.
They don't question that which is lain before them--it's their duty.
They consider it their personal responsibility to protect those who they don't nor, will ever know.
They don't serve a man, or woman in power--they serve an ideology, principles, and represent the symbols of freedom.
....and I could go on, and on, and on.....

It was my honour to serve directly with them in Iceland, and whilst there's a friendly / competitive rivalry between the Navy and Marines I will never question their most significant of contributions, sacrifices, and current role of our history and in our current society.  It is also the reason why I dedicate myself adherently to ensure their service is not taken for granted, nor are their lives wasted by those who would use such honour in a dishonourable way.

They are our protectors; as civilian citizens, it is our duty to protect them as diligently.

There's nothing you can't accomplish when you put wikipedia your mind to it.

I actually learned quite a bit in the several pages worth of Marine info I researched just now. For instance the red stripe commemorates the bloodshed by Marine officers during the Mexican 'Battle of Chapultepec' that took place during the mid 19th century.

Dam those Marines fire up i got a 3 page lecture by email because one of my friends gave him my addy. Hey VinDog, I think you'll love this... This was given to me by a staff NCO when I was just promoted to lance.  It was written by an unknown anonymous Canadian Citizen. It goes like so...

"Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed.  They treat their service as if it was some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshiping their Commandant as if he were a God, and making weird dog noises like a band  of savages.  They'll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest sons of bitches I have ever known.  Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond a mans normal limit, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and generally speaking the United States Marines I've come across are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have had the pleasure to meet."
How's that for a little moto?!
