Michael Jordan is not now, or has he ever been the King of anything except being the most overrated player in the history of sports. Players were playing at the highest of levels well before Jordan, and they will play at, or better than that long after we are all long gone.

Kobe is the KING in this era. Lebron still has a long way to go before he can be on the same page as Kobe.

Kobe will reign for another 3 or 4 years...then LeBron will be the best of all-time (if he remains healthy)...his game has no flaws and he's still improving!

There will never be a other MJ but LeBron James & Kobe Bryant pretty close!

Kobe is the best right now.  LeBron is coming, but Id take D-Wade or Carmello.  Carmello is a beast (inside, outside) pick your way to die.  I feel all these guys will be like Patrick Ewing, Stockton and Karl Malone who played during Jordan's reign and never got rings, so will they.  Wade got his, but it'll be intereting to see if LeBron or Mello will having to go up against Kobe with this young Laker team, which will get better with free agents and possible trades.  I see Kobe with possible 7 rings, what ya think?

I feel LeBron, after kobe goes will have to battle Mello, especially if they can keep the team together or Durant.  Don't sleep on those Bobcats out east either.  Matchups don't favor the cavs at all.

Michael Jordan was an execellent player and team member.  I agreed there other great players before Michael jordan who were great.  Michael show confidence and team motivation in the Chicago Bulls years of winning championship basketball.  Michael in my opinion was not overrated.  Chicago bulls won several  championships and share the wealth.

The first comment was the best comment of this entire thread. The nature of being a fan of anyone or anything is based upon emotion. We like certain players or teams based upon our emotional attachments. Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, Melo and Durant are all amazing players. But to think that any of them are "KING OF BASKETBALL" is disrespectful to everyone who has ever played or coached the game. If there is, or will ever was to be a "KING OF BASKETBALL" , it would have to be Dr. Naismith, for obvious reasons.

Some consider Micheal Jordan as the best basketball player ever, however even that is debated and is influenced by when you became a fan and how much of the game prior to Jordan you are familiar with. It would be interesting to board a "time machine and go 25 years into the future and listen to this same discussion then. Would Jordon be as remembered and revered then as he is now after the other players of note in this thread have played out their careers in front of an even younger more broad based international audience?

I have said many time in these threads before that Jordan was the beneficiary of the global expansion of Basketball and birth of digital media. The NBA  is a business, its players are commodities and the game itself is a product.

Lastly, the word "king" by definition implies: "a person or thing preeminent in its class". nba.com and elias sports bureau do a wonderful job of taking the emotion out of debates like this one. Lets look at where the "king" rates statistically amongst his peers when we consider great NBA feats.

CHAMPIONSHIPS: Everyone likes to point out Jordan's 6 NBA championships.

List the players with 6 or more championship rings. (Jordon does not top this list.)

List the players with 6 or more consecutive championship rings. (Jordon is not on this list.)

MVPS: Next to Championships Jordan's 5 NBA MVP awards are a huge conversation.

List the players with 5 or more NBA MVP Awards. (Jordon does not top this list.)

SCORING: The fact that Jordan was a prolific scorer is never understated.

List the top 5 players on the NBA scoring list. (Jordon was not even the most prolific scorer of his generation.)

List the players with 3 or more NBA Scoring titles.

OVERALL FLOOR GAME: Those players who can score, rebound and make assist at a high rate are considered to have a great overall "floor game".

List the players who have posted averages of at least 25 points 7 rebounds and 7 assist during the course of an entire NBA season.

List the players who have posted averages of at least 25 points 7 rebounds and 7 assist during the course of more than one entire NBA season. (Jordon is not on this list.)

List the players who have posted averages of at least 25 points 7 rebounds and 7 assist during the course of an entire NBA career. (Jordon is not on this list.)

List the players who have posted averages of at least 30 points 7 rebounds and 7 assist during the course of an entire NBA season.

List the players who have posted averages of at least 30 points 7 rebounds and 7 assist during the course of more than one entire NBA season. (Jordon is not on this list.)

Being "preeminent in ones class" literally means that they are far superior to the rest. The numbers without emotion do not lie. While he was a tremendous player he is no more noteworthy than Jabbar, Magic, Bird, Russell, Chamberlain LeBron or Robinson (the names that you would have encountered if you looked at the stats mentioned).
