I'm a loser baby...
Caught this on Yahoo right before going to be bed tonight - a 6th grade teacher is writing notes such as "-20% for being a loser" on a girls paper, his way of "relating to the students" and grading a students work.

Now, I'm going to just ignore the question of whether this is wrong or not - anyone with a brain can answer that (the other parents in the video defending the teacher, obviously don't have one), I'm just wondering how you would feel, either at that age, or even your age now, if someone calls you a loser?

Keep in mind, this isn't just another student and "boys being boys" or "girls being stupid", this is a teacher - a grown man bullying a girl and using tactics that of a young child. Would you shrug it off, embrace it as a defense mechanism, be hurt and show you're hurt by it, or something else?

Freak'n middle school teachers once again giving the media something else to focus on besides increases in classroom sizes, less school days, and numerous teachers being laid off.

I would like to know more about this story......like why the picture they used of the poor girl looked like a 2nd or third grade pic, and why in the red apple this teacher was grading " -20%"?-----Never seen that before. .....AND exactly how in the world this type of grading helps one relate better to their students? Idiot.

If I was a 6th grader? I'd be hurt and offended.  That's pretty crushing coming from a teacher.

That teacher must be a disturbed person in life where he/she takes it in harsh way, the encouraging gesture is missing where progress will never comes whoever be that teacher's student is.

12 yrs old is such a tender age when children are just starting  to  mature into adulthood.  Such negativity  is bound to scar a child for life.

If I saw that teacher on the street, i would punch him in the mouf.
#6 | 1599 days ago

I saw that article too ... I was a pretty tough little kid, so I probably would have given the teacher a what-for myself.    Then got suspended ... again.

If it were my kid, I'd be at the school myself giving the teacher a what-for.  Then get arrested ... (thought I'd say "again", didn't you?)

PS - in both cases, by "what-for", I really mean black eye.

I've heard worse from my teachers. I hooked school in kindergarten, and showed them how smart I was. Being constantly hit by teachers when I was in school was a regular occurrence. There are a few TRUE losers out there and by the time they see what they have passed on, their lives are in ruins. I am only worried how the children have turned out after these fiascos. Matter of fact, I was told that I wouldn't live to be 21. I wonder where they are now......

The paper looked like it was graded by a class mate, and if it was how dare the teacher allow it. And if it was graded by him well shame on him, he obviously has no place in the class room.  And he's lucky that he has done this to a women who handled it correctly, not by a parent who could have simply walked into the school and kicked his ass. I will be curious to see how this turns out.

I also seen that when I logged off, If it would have been me in 6Th grade and the
Teacher had done that I would have said Thank You. Just before kicking him in
the balls and then handing him the phone and telling him that he really don't
want to meet my parents, But go ahead and call them anyway

If that had of happened to me in 6th grade I know I would have cried.  And I know that my Mom would have ripped that teacher in half!

I'd just wait it out as I matured and then when I was of age... I'd probably sleep with his wife.

the teacher just needs to go. There are plenty of Great Teachers out of work, that would love to take his place.

He needs to be isolated in a remote island doing macramè stuff, away from kids, teaching is not for everyone

if i was the administrator of that school i would suspend that teacher. that is going way to far to write something like that on a kids paper. that is not fair and not right. a little kid does not know any better and thinks he/she is being bullied. get ride of that teacher.

Any news story with AP as the source is questionable.

If the story is accurate, the teacher should be fired.

Agreed on both of your statements. Trouble is ----pretty hard to fire a teacher with that many years. And I find it hard to believe that signs of his stupidity weren't obvious his first couple of years teaching.

IF this really happened, and it was my child, it wouldn't be pretty when i went down to the school....I can make a rukkus ESPECIALLY when it involves a child, mine or anyones. If this is true ,I am sure there will be at the veyr least a suspension and a looking into.

How can you say "if" at all when the teacher admitted to it?

I'm grading papers right now (in between posting comments)... what a great idea, let me try it! Not.

Criticism is sometimes necessary. But there are a couple of rules...

1) Be hard on the effort, not the individual. So you can say, "I know you can do better than this" but not "you're a loser."

2) Always start with the positive-- "Good ideas-- I like how you ____ but you need to _____"

And yes, why does it always have to be a middle school teacher? As I know Becky DOES realize, not all middle school teachers suck!

Apparently not, since I have the student notes, parent e-mails, and letters of recommendations that all say I do very well. But I'd love to see you... and everyone else who thinks he or she is an expert on public schools... try it for a week.

I was just referring to the teacher in the original story who said calling the kid a "loser" was HIS way of relating to the students...I figured you had no problems with that because of your geekiness, etc. Only jokes here, I'm mute on anything having to do with public schooling.

Sorry (I'll say sorry because it's your poll) but you were slinging the insults right and left when we started the Race and while I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you were joking (at least half-joking), everyone best realize that when it comes to my profession I am deadly serious-- so yes, my reaction is likely going to appear to be defensive when someone crosses that line.

It is about time someone was honest with these kids. Really does every kid that runs in the race really deserve a trophy. There are winners and losers in this world. As soon as you figure out where you fit in the better off and happier you can be. Some people have their name on their shirt and some people write the paychecks. Figure out which one you are and embrace it. Not everyone is going to win, and without losing you would not know how great winning feels.
Embrace it

It would all depend on who it came from.  I was taught to respect my elders and people in authority, so I'd probally want to know what I did wrong, but basically shrug it off or even laugh it off most the time.
