What should Dale Earnhardt Jr do about his future in NASCAR? (Edited 04/12/10 08:26PM by Debi_L)
I've been really upset about Jr's performances since he joined with Hendrick.  His teammates seem to have decent cars, yet Dale has been plagued with problems and none of his so-called team mates have done much to help him.  It seems to be the Jimmie Johnson show Sunday after Sunday with Hendrick Racing and I don't like it.
My question is, what should he do once his contract with Hendrick is up? I'd like to see him join with Stewart-Haas.  My guess is Tony and Ryan would be thrilled to have him.  What do you think?

I think he should do whatever it is that makes him happy.  There are improvements in the 88 team this year, far more than last, however, there isn't a win yet.  I honestly think if he can get an honest win, not a last minute pit strategy, rain is coming win, it will do tons to boost the confidence of both he and his team.  I feel almost the same about Jeff Gordon.  Jeff has the same kind of win, and he is also struggling, although his finishes have been a little more consistent.  I'm sure it has to be terribly hard for these drivers to read negative comments day after day, week after week, month after month.

Dale Jr, whatever you decide, your fanbase will be behind you 100%.

i believe any team would be thrilled to have Junior for obvious reasons from him bringing in tons of money and his performance... HE CAN DRIVE!!!!! his 18 wins proves that...its too early to speculate on what he should/might do...but whatever decision he makes i will be there to support it :)

Junior has raced full time for 10 years. He has 18 wins. A third of them came in one year. That year is clearly a fluke and an outlier. In the 9 other years he has 12 wins.  He's a marginal driver. There's just no other way about it. He's certainly deserving of a Cup ride, but not one of the stature he has now. If it weren't for his rabid fan base, he'd be just another guy.

Yeah Jr.  is rich enough to do whatever will make him happy.

As a Jeff Gordon fan, Debi is right about the frustration there although its quite a bit different from Junior's frustration. Gordon has been running well and finishing well, but he hasn't been able finish on top like he used to. Heck, you could argue he should be celebrating back to back wins right now, but he's found ways (or ways have found him) to blow those situations.  Still running good, just not good enough especially when you have a guy like Jimmie Johnson who's already built a 20 point lead on the field (and 30 on most of the field) when the Chase begins.

Jeff has been with Steve Letarte for a lot longer than Jr has had Lance.  To me, it is just more of the same thing, except for that longevity between driver and crew chief.  I only hope that Jr and Lance are able to pull it all together soon and not end up like Jeff and Steve, who run well enough every week to remain near the top, but not well enough to win.

There are only 2 CC's that know JR inside and out, Pops, and Tony Jr.  None of this is Lance's fault, in fact , I dont think there  is a "fault" other than life in general. Two of the cornerstones of a successful Nascar driver/team are consistency, and longevity. Dale Jr has never had either.

Let's look at the facts: Loses his Dad, leaves his Dad's company after highly publicized BS, goes to HMS, Tony Jr sent out to pasture, Lance McGrew walks in. Oh , and lets not forget the constant and eternal pressure of the "Earnhardt" name, and the expectations that come along with it.

When life is in a turmoil off the track, you can be sure it is on the track as well.

In my opinion, Junior will leave HMS, and go to an Owner /Driver situation at  JRM, possibly with Hendrick engines, or he may cut all ties and have some kind of limited partnership involving SHR and JRM.
Regardless, Junyah will not be departing Nascar anytime soon, and he has enough money to do what he wants, on his own terms.

And, as Debi said, his fans will be right there to back him up!

The only thing I wondering...and tell me if I'm wrong...If jr., does start his own team, wouldn't that be more pressure? I mean, he loves racing, that's obvious, and if he starts his own team, he  would have to deal with some of the business end, and ask him, he will tell you, that's the part he really doesn't care for...I see him with his own team, just not right now....I think he is smart,,like TONY...and will get all his marbles in a row, he will surround himself with good people and then maybe get it going....hes sooo young...then again, maybe that's what is distracting him this year....hmmmmm....

It doesn't matter to me what Jr. does once his contract is up, he will always be one of my favorite drivers. I'll cheer for him no matter where he goes....unless Smokin Hot is in second place and is about to beat him...............................

Jen, he isn't that young anymore. He is 32 , and the years are passing quickly. As far as the financial end, he has Kelly handling the majority of that stuff, and as always she would make things as easy as possible for Baby bro.
I really don't think it would be added stress, I actually think it would be the opposite. I think he would come into his own this way, and I also think he needs to get it done sooner than later.

JR has lost that little sparkle in his eyes since he joined Hendrick.  His cars always seems to have something go wrong with them. Also, I don't see him being treated equally as Gordon or Johnson.

I will be very happy to see him leave Hendrick.  I think he will start his own team.  He certainly would not have any problems getting sponsors.  His Nationwide Team is very impressive!

Whatever makes him happy is what I want him to do.....and I agree with Diablorain, wherever he goes and whatever he does I will still be his fan!

After listening to Mark Martin saying he has no intentions of retiring.  I do say JR will leave and start his own team.  I think he will do just what Tony is doing and use Hendricks Engines.  He is using them in his Nationwide Cars and Mr. Hendrick does have a small ownership in JRM.

In personally hopes this is what his decision is.

I am certainly NOT blaming Lance McGrew for any part of the troubles Jr has had.  He has a lot of stuff on his plate, and as much as Kelley, Tony Jr, Pops and his mom try to deflect the "unimportant" stuff away from him, as a smart businessman, he needs to be aware of what's going on around him.  Do I think he has too much going on? Maybe so, it all does detract from his focus on the racetrack.

I bet we all just wish we could see inside his mind.  I'd have a constant headache, but it would be interesting to see how he weighs the endless options that are before him.

Jr. continues to run in NASCAR but only as a 2nd tier driver.  Maybe he will win one race a year.

Dale should just keep racing..hopefully start winning..or continue to be this generation's Kyle Petty

Jr is not the same driver as he was in the early 2000's. The COT, I think really has him confused. As in he cant explain what to do with it to make it better. At the beginning of a race he is decent, half way through he starts fading after the track changes. Maybe its his communication with his crew chief? He was great when he was with DEI, but after the new cars came in, he hasnt been that good. Goin to another team,  wont improve him.

Junior already has a team in place right now.... JR Moter Sports in the Nationwide series.  IMHO, JR needs to do two things; 1, Bring JR Moter Sportsw to the Cup level...  let his sister, Kelly run the operation at the owner level, ...  she is a great business lady! Choose THE PEOPLE that you want to talk to on race days on the radio and learn to tell Tony JR. what the car needs, and Junior...  RACE YOUR A$$ OF!  That is when you're at your best.  2.  Go back and watch how your dad handled pressure on and off the track...  On the track, he refused to lose and made you pay if you beat him...  Something you should consider next time the 18 car comes in to your sceen.  Don't worry about pleasing everyone else...  Please your desire to race, be humble but exude confidence when they cram a mike in your face and just be the Junior we last saw in victory lane in Talledega...

I definitely agree with you about the Hendrick TeamW I have been so frustrated watching JR losing constantly.  OK, he used the #3 for that one race, and he won, but that was NATIONWIDE not SPRINT.  I am not sure but I think he is not concentrating on the one thing he needs to focus on, and that is racing.  His primary job is not owning a bar, or getting involved in too many other things. I think he has tried to do too much too fast (except for racing).  I don't know how long Mr. Hendrick is going to let this go, we shall see.  The idea of him owning his own team might give him the kick-start that he needs.  Look at Tony Stewart, in my opinion, he has leaped in  his attitude, he does not behave in the manner that he used to because HE is on the line and he takes the responsibility to heart.  OK, JR has Danica Patrick on the NATIONWIDE races. T.hat's all well and good but I think if JR were to own his own team and actually race in the SPRINT side, he will find himself doing things differently.  I mean, it's gotten to the point now that I am embarrassed by Dale Jr every week.  I have so much respect for Tony Stewart because he now holds himself to the standards of an owner/driver and he represents his team very well.  I think if he stays within that zone, so to speak, Tony will do very well.
