Are you becoming a fattist?
Read the Article: Are you becoming a fattist?

While you've never considered yourself a person who discriminates against others, you might be in danger of becoming a "fattist."

A fattist is a term coined to describe people who are prejudiced against overweight people.

You know, people who complain about obese people taking up too much room on airplanes, lapping over from their seat into yours.

As a former chubster myself, I can't bring myself to discriminate against overweight people.  I mean, I still make fun of them, as I do with everyone else, equally (we ALL need to feel included, right?), but I still feel very bad when I see people giving them a hard time.  And I'd never say anything to their faces (yes I know that makes me a terrible person and a hypocrite, but hey, I'm a wretched human being, I'm aware).
I remember the fat-tastic days ... feeling like you're being watched every time you eat something, the shame in saying that you're hungry, the stares from people on the street, feeling less-than (and ONLY metaphorically speaking), family members making comments like "do you REALLY need that donut?" or "you're so pretty, if you'd only stop hiding behind all that extra weight".

yep.. but I got fat after my baseball pursuits were cut short by injury in college.  gained about 80 lbs.. then eventually lost 100 a few years ago.. So I have no problem ridiculing people who don't even try

Yes, at times I poke fun of "fat " people. If a person doesn't have any self esteem or motivation and effort to lose some weight, then it's their own fault to be ridiculed. Living a semi healthy lifestyle and exercise is also important for health and logtivity. Those with a medical condition don't neccesarily count, nor do the infamous Love Handles.

Two of my three daughters were very chubby until about the age of 13. My wife was so concerned she was always making us "eat right"  I don't know if it was baby fat or the fact that they were always active in sports but the weight did come off by the time they went to college. Just saying I think as long as they (kids) are active and not just playing video games I wouldn't worry to much about it.

i have battled with chubbiness my whole life.

part of the reason why i joined the military.......it worked. and then i got out and started eating.
gained 45 pounds in two years. i blame tortillas.....and myself.

then my wife "coaxed" me into getting a gym membership, and so far i have lost 34 of those pounds and am back in decent shape. it's an everyday struggle.......my idea now is that i can eat whatever i want, but i MUST PAY for it later at the gym. no exceptions. it's working for me.
#25 | 1146 days ago

I discriminate against everyone!

It's just easier that way I guess.  lol

I treat everyone like I would like to be treated.  I will go out of my way to help someone not because  want something in return, but because I would want someone to help me if I need it.

I agree. I have a overweight grandson who is only 13 and it breaks my heart to watch him try to be active or to see his pain when someone makes a comment about his weight.

I have been a big guy for most of my life. Last July I got on the scale, and when I saw that number...316..I knew things had to change. Now, 10 months later, I weigh 264 lbs, and I am not finished yet.

I don't really give folks a hard time about weight issues. I have never been obese, but after my divorce, I did gain a little water weight... well... microbrew weight. I've lost that and I try to stay active, my yard keeps me from getting too overweight.

I belonged to that club too when I was a kid and was horrible! When I got into puberty things changed for good and I have tried to stay in shape since then. I don't like people being pointed or discriminated for any reason. I have always thought if we are not beautiful enough (whatever people think beauty is) we will always have different qualities that someone eventually will appreciate and love. Everybody is beautiful

I'm more of a lazyness-ist than a "fattist" !    I am truly disturbed over how "lazy" people in this Country have become and I guess that lazyness leads to obesity as well. As far as obese people on airplanes "lapping over" into my space and seat- HELL YES I hate that. I paid a lot of money for my tiny little seat on that plane and being a pretty big guy myself at 6' 2" and 235 pounds- I take up every ounce of MY space anyway. If you can't fit into your own space- then buy two seats- it's not fair that I should have to share mine with you.

Considering my best friend in high school reached the near side of 400, and my wife was near 300 when I met and later married her-- no, I'm certainly not a fattist. But I hate people assuming-- the majority of obese people can blame themselves, but not all. My wife had a metabolic disorder, including extreme hypothyroidism. She was eventually limited to a 600-calorie/day diet while working out seven days a week and STILL gained weight. Her body was simply misprogrammed. Fortunately, she finally got approved for gastric bypass surgery four years ago and it no doubt saved her life. Now she is literally half the person she was. The friend got the same surgery as well, but has not been as diligent in following the mandated lifestyle changes afterwards as she has and thus not as successful.

Today we're in Target and my stepson with autism left his GameBoy behind. As I'm trying to retrace our steps to find it, he is of course losing his mind, very loudly. I look up and see other people staring at us, staring at me and I can read their eyes-- "can't you control your child?" I learned long ago not to assume anything about anyone just because of outward appearances. You don't know their story-- you haven't walked a mile in their shoes.

hmm...not sure how I feel about you sharing all of this information with the world...but ok.  A note of correction...I wasn't quite that big when we met, but certainly wound up that way before the surgery.  It's amazing how other people view the obese.

Anyway, I was not a normal case by any means...and I certainly can attest that having gastric bypass isn't just a "quick fix" as most people think.  It takes a complete lifestyle change and commitment to making that change; not just for a little while either...for LIFE.  So the surgery certainly isn't for just anyone who is overweight or obese.  If someone has an eating disorder before having the surgery, that person will still have it after the surgery unless he/she gets counseling and is able to change poor habits prior to surgery.  Just like anything else in life, big changes require hard work and a lot of commitment.  Wouldn't you agree m'dear?

One of my closest friends is a plus size girl. Recently she broke up with her boyfriend of 6 years. I never knew till now how much her weight bothered her.  She has really opened up to me about things and all her insecurities.  Honestly after hearing her talk about how she feels and views things, I think "big" people put themselves threw enough without other people saying things or giving them a hard time. It really made me feel sad to hear her and totally caught me off guard. Funny as this sounds I always thought that she had way more self esteem then myself. I was wrong!!
So personally I don't make fun of bigger people nor do i think anyone else should.

On the other side of things.......as a mother I don't think it's proper parenting when you have a 3 yr old who  weighs as much as i do or any where close. it's not the child's fault though. that problem comes from the parents. being a parent ( usually means you are older which in turns means you should be smarter) you should know what type of life you are  throwing your kid into. Why in the hell would you start them off on the wrong foot. Not only because kids and people can be cruel but the health reasons.
