Sentence construction/grammar are also important to me.  If English is not your first language, I will not be critical.  However, if you've been an English speaking person your whole life, there's no reason for gross errors in sentence structure or grammar.

My "Q friends" are pretty good about their grammar and spelling. For everyone else...there's heavy criticism. People who tend to underestimate the power of commas and/or periods drive me a little crazy.

I naturally just skip over posts with bad spelling or that sound completely incoherent or not on point. No need to waste time on poorly typed posts where the member showed no effort of fixing his or her mistakes.

I know I make a lot of mistakes, I'm terrible at typing! Sometimes I post something and then I realize I have made some mistakes  I come back for editing but at this point I think all those who have read my post must be thinking I'm an Idiot but I don't care, as Tammy said we are here for fun, I don't judge and I'm smart enough to understand what people is trying to say even if their English skills are not that good. I always keep in mind not everybody in here is American and for some of us English is not our mother tongue, so for me that's not a problem.
#18 | 1097 days ago

I don't mind misspellings normally, but will comment when the misspelling is actually another word with another meaning entirely.  (Going for Immortality but ending up with Immorality.)

But I'm more likely to comment if someone meant one thing and said another.   I am unable to read minds.
#19 | 1097 days ago

i can usually understand the point being made.  spelling, no big deal.  sentence construction, no big deal.  i'm tolerant because i understand that  some folks just were not meant to retain all the fancy book learning they had in school.

The way people can not spell when they post is annoying. I always wonder and sometimes ask) if anybody paid attention during English class.

The most popular retort is that they call me the "grammar police". Like attacking me makes them any smarter...

not at all. well...there was that one time i corrected an ex q-er's soliloquy (holy sh*t i spelled that right on the first try) but it was only because she said she was going to post it somewhere as some sort of massive statement. i just couldn't let her do that as it was.

as for myself, i aqm one of the worst typists. ever. i'm slow and typo all the time. to type at the speed i'm thinking is really hard and usually results in horrible spelling. so i leave others alone. they're probably not idiots...they just think faster than their fingers can go.

Not really critical unless someone pushes the wrong button too many times. Reminds me of this:

A friend is one to whom you can pour out the contents of your heart, chaff and grain alike. Knowing that the gentlest of hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.

#34 | 1097 days ago

True, and I prefer not to strain my brain by reading misspellings. It is so much easier to read a well-spelled post.

I will never, however, take to task any of our members who are "English as second language". My problem is with people who are either too lazy, arrogant, or disinterested to use correct spelling.

Agree with Christi here.

Mistakes, like when Leigh is in a rush to tell her newest cheese story, I'm not going to be a douche and correct her on how to spell "Parmesan", or in the fancy way "Parmigiano", correctly.

But if it's someone trying to make points in a thread and argue one way or another, I'm definitely going to say something to where it's "your" vs. "you're", "there" vs. "they're" vs. "their", or "who's" vs. "whose", and they're making that mistake consistently. It just irritates me more than anything, but besides that, it's early grade-school stuff we all learned at one point - apply it.

In a series, that last comma (before the and/or) is supposedly deemed as "optional" nowadays. I always preferred using it though.

Generally, commas are needed in a series before the "and" only if there are more than two items listed.

I like the Braves and Rockies
BUT
I like the Braves, Rockies, and Cubs
(the latter statement is false ).

Also as seen above, periods always go outside the final parenthesis, but inside the final quotation mark.

I picked spelling just to pick something, but, as long as I can read it and understand them, I don't care. I already know my grammar is lousy, but, over the years, you take short cuts or you forget. Spelling and punctuations seem to be ppls weakness. I see ppl putting there, where there should be, their or they're, but, does it matter? as long you can understand the person.
