What "sayings" or "phrases" annoy you? (Edited 06/05/10 08:33PM by icfeet)
I was thinking the other day about different accents that people have when speaking, and some local "phrases" that are used.  I try to speak proper English, and some things annoy me when used in conversation.  What are your "pet peeves" about language?

Ya know what I mean    .... after almost every statement

having someone repeat what you just said as a question .... I always want to ask if their brains processing center is on vacation or do you just have an echo echo echo in your head

...." not that there is anything wrong with that"   annoys the CRAP out of me.   I hear it all the time and it ALWAYS follows a statement that you actually mean (mostly an insult) then you try to cover it up with... not that there's anything wrong with that!   Example: " I overheard  this flaming gay guy the other day, not that there's anything wrong with that, and he said... blah, blah, blah"      I am calling BS on anyone who uses that phrase because IF there wasn't "anything wrong with that" in your mind- you wouldn't have to use the phrase to begin with!  Just admit it and quit trying to hide!

This is a military thing...but I think you will all understand:

"We have a volunteer opportunity for your folks" or "We need volunteers for this event"...

These two statements are the more misleading and misused statements in my Air Force!!
If someone says this, it doesn't mean that 'if you can spare the time and effort, please come and help where you can'...

it Means "You are gonna send X people to this thing, no matter what their plans are or whatever duties they need to do in the office...you are VOLUN-TOLD to do this!!"

What a crock...

I hate hearing sports reporters interviewing athletes with these words "What did it feel like..." That is so overused and tired - find something else more creative to ask!

And... Any sporting event where the crowd chants that "(insert team here) sucks!" I'm all for being a loud audience and making life difficult for the visiting team, but I have no use for that.

I agree!   so that would make the suckors become the suckees  -- doesn't it?

I hate listening to sports interviews, the answers are almost always cliche's the questions are almost always the same, most of which are basically so stupid or so obvious that it must take great restraint from grabbing the mike and bashing the guy in the head with it a few times.

sports announcers are the absolute WORST for stupid phrases and cliches.  examples: you don't want to turn it over here(okay, gain 1 more yard and then turn it over)  he can tie it with one swing of the bat.(he can blow the game with one too) and the all time dumbest question "what do you need to do to win this game"?  how about SCORE MORE POINTS !!!!!

I also am annoyed with questions that are rhetorical, or if you just looked around for a second and thought before you asked it, the question wouldn't even be needed.

"What's the score?" "What inning is it?"

sports announcers are the absolute WORST for stupid phrases and cliches.  examples: you don't want to turn it over here(okay, gain 1 more yard and then turn it over)  he can tie it with one swing of the bat.(he can blow the game with one too) and the all time dumbest question "what do you need to do to win this game"?  how about SCORE MORE POINTS !!!!!
one i hear in football alot is - the receiver caught it at its highest point. When a WR catches a 30 yard pass, the highest point was somewhere around 15 yard back down field.  when the receiver caught it, it was on its downward arch.

One of the "Phrases/Sayings", which I have really learned to Hate is:  "Like",  it is used ALL of the time by some people; those whom seem to have a  very limited Vocabulary; you know those whom use that word about 3 times for every sentence...!!
