Ok its time for the Q waitress to post.lol. I have been a waitress now for 30 years and here are my thoughts on tipping. If you get great service and at the end of the meal you are in a better mood and the server was a part of that over tip it really does tell us that we have done our job. I am an over tipper of course, but yes I have on occasion not left a tip. Why am I going to leave money for someone that had not done their job properly? It is the only way to let that person know. Now my pet peeve about tipping when couples go out and one picks up the bill woo hoo bonus right? Well if the service was good leave half of what you expected to pay for your dinner, dont throw down a couple of dollars after a free dinner. And yes in case you dont believe it, I make 3.63 an hour thats not a lot of money.

I work in the restaurant business, and I always tip based on service. Were they friendly, did they do their best to keep my drinks filled, did they make suggestions on the menu items. People need to realize that when that server turns in a drink into the bar, or food into the kitchen. They no longer have control of it, if it is wrong or takes a while, more times than not the bartender or cook screwed it up. Also a server asking the cook or bartender where their stuff just pisses them off and you wind up getting punished. Sure that server should have caught the error and had them fix it right away, but sometimes they make mistakes. If your food wasn't cooked enough or over cooked, it is always the kitchens fault. Don't punish your servers for other peoples errors.

Even for really bad service I will leave 10%, but normally it is at least 20%.

I always go by the philosphy that there is no such thing as over- tipping, but there has been a few times when I left a low tip based on the servers attitude.
#3 | 1047 days ago

I can't bring myself to leave no or a low tip - ever. I may avoid places for bad food and/or service. I delivered pizza for 6 months and it helped me appreciate tipping even more than I already did. The satisfaction from tipping properly came several times when the wait staff at a place where I frequented often would fight over who would take the table I was at.

I pretty much go by that. I have had bad service, but, I try to figure out why. Did this person have a bad day? or what. I've always given a tip, (maybe when I was in my poor student days, not much, even then tho I gave something)  ppl like restaurants, to eat and feel like this person and place cares. People don't go there to get angry looks or forget things. Thing is, sometimes, the waiter or waitress get blamed for bad cooks or other things. I try to think of those things when giving a tip. Restaurants are big now,....... 35-40 years ago, it was like a extra treat to even THINK about going out to eat. Now, they're almost everywhere.

I am good about tipping 20%... A couple of times I left without tipping. Only because she never checked on us. Our drinks went unfilled. She was rude.

The second time was when a new restaurant opened. We were seated, but she never came and took our order... We sat there for over an hour waiting for her. I talked to the manager and said she had many complaints.... He gave me free meal for 4... Which was nice... it was over $150.. FREE!!

Hooters on Military Blvd in VA Beach.  Service was so bad I could have left without paying the bill also, waitress was nowhere to be found.  Unfortunately I'm to nice to leave without paying the bill.  Always tip 15-20%, depending on where i need to round up to an even dollar.

I would never leave less than a 20% tip. Waiters and waitresses are paid such a low hourly wage, to do less would be cruel, IMHO.

I always tip, but it varies on how much depending on the service I receive. I've had bad service, but it's usually been when the tip was included in the bill because the party I was with was large.

Don't think I've ever not tipped.  I do base my tip on the quality of service, though.  If the service is "acceptable" and nothing more, the server gets 10%.  If it's above "just acceptable", the tip goes up commensurately.

God you are so right. I don't cook it but servers need to be proud of what they are serving, I have on many occasions told a cook I am not serving that and if he wants to fight ( i never fight or disrespect a cook there job is hell) I simply get the boss and he tells them to re cook it.

forgot once.  we figured it out a hour or so after we left. we'd had a large group of family out for breakfast.  the 15% gratuity was not added in as we thought it would be.  my sister who can be a real chiseler didn't  bother to check the bill close enough.  we did go back.  the  waitress got 25% of the bill plus i  dropped  an  extra 10 spot for her because we were stupid. the service was fantastic by the way.

i'm with dickhead and glenda. if you've ever waited on a customer in your life, you tip your brains out. in a restaurant, if the service is just awful, they only get 15% from me, but normally i'll tip way too much and round it up so the amount comes to something that ends in a zero or 5. in a bar, i tip on average about $2 per drink. thank christ i'm a cheap date. hey. you take care of your bartender, they take care of you.

I always tip and like many have already said often the size of my tip varies with service , but more often then not i leave a pretty solid tip because i always remind myself that the base pay is often far too low for having to serve people which are often more horrible to the workers then even some of the worse service i have had. it is def not easy working with the public on a daily basis.

Well, it sounds like I'm going to e the hard-ass on this thread.  I would, however, at the onset state that I've waited tables in college and cooked so I state such from an 'informed perspective'.

I always look to leave a generous tip and have, on two occasions tipped equal too, or in excess of the cost of the meal for service that was so incredible it was like they were reading my mind.  Both times was with my family when the waitress was serving four of us (before my daughter was born).

There have also been a few occasions where I have compensated a good waiter/waitress for a cheap-skate at another table that shorted them a due tip.  Usually such were accompanied by people that treated the staff so bad you could tell they were either of the elitist mindset or just prikx in general so verbal support in the process was also given.  One time I waited for a guy outside to give him the "what-for" regarding their actions in a restaurant because he obviously didn't care about anyone around him.

The rest is based upon service.  Yes, I have left several "one penny" tips for those times when service was so bad the individual didn't deserve anything more than acknowledgment that I was at their station.  One got really pissed when I tipped the cooks $20 for an outstanding meal.
#26 | 1047 days ago

I usually tip at least 15% when dining out.  Depending on the service, or maybe due to the size of our party, I give closer to 20%, especially if our party may have more complex orders or needs more attention.

10-15% for pretty bad service. ie. Takes forever to come to the table, doesn't offer to refill the drinks, takes too long to give me the check...

20-25% is for my normal tips...

Depending on the bill I have even tipped over what the bill was. Like I've $20 on a $8 bill.....

normally I would tip what is customary( double the tax by rounding to nearest dollar). Here in NY the tax rate is 8.65% but in other states I usually compute the tax rtate to equal 15-20%. Now restuarants that automatically puts the grautiuity in the bill- YOU GET NOTHING!!!!!,, I will leave EXACT AMOUNT, change and all. I am not  rich nor am i cheap skate, dont stereotype me because you think nobody leaves competitive tips.

Not at all.....any restaurant that has the audacity to specify the gratuity will get only that gratuity.  If the waitress or waiter was good, I'll call her over, tell her/him my reasoning, then encourage them to seek employment where they can truly be compensated for their efforts.  I will even ask if they would like my card so I can give an evaluation of their performance for any applications they would like to send out.  Then, I will call over the manager, tell them my reasons why I will not return to their restaurant, and that they should post that policy on their door so people will know.

I always tip based on attentiveness and attitude. If they make me feel good and I talk about coming back then they get 20 percent. If its not a good visit, I always look around and try to figure it out. Not enough staff, bartender slow, etc. Recently I did leave about a 5% tip. We ate at the bar, after about 5 minutes I had to ask the bartender to wipe down the spot. He never did and I finally reached across the bar, grabbed his rag and wiped it myself. Then he came over and tried to re-wipe it, but ended up spraying cleaner all over our arms. We ordered two drafts and he poured them, left them under the tap sitting there, and forgot about them. By the time they got to us there was no head. One of the waitresses went over and poured us new ones and dumped the others afte we rolled our eyes to her He spent his time trying to pick up some group of out-of town women. Even his waitresses were giving him grief about his turnaround on their orders. Wait time for beers was beyond slow. and the bar itself was very slow. And the most amazing thing was when we first sat down we told him it was our first time eating there, and we were looking for a new place to take clients. He blew that meal and many many more. The only reason I left anything at all was because we noticed they were pooling tips.

When you're the only family in the restaurant, and you have to go over to where the waitress is sitting, tell her to quit pleasuring her boyfriend under the table, when our food has been up under the warmer for 5 minutes (after the cook called it out three times), that individual isn't getting more than the residual copper pieces in my pocket.

I left a penny once and only once.  She was the worst ,rudest , most disrespectful, most horrible waitress ever.  I do not think there is ever a reson to act the way this woman did.  But since that time I have given  in a lot of thought and I feel that either she is just a miserable person and that is a very sad thing, or she had a really bad life and that too is sad.
So while it may not be right for her to act the way she did , I acted even worse by doing what I did..

And I explained to her that a penny with a good tip is a wonderful compliment a penny by itself means well you suck. And do you know 4 other younger servers at my restaurant did not know that. So thats why when I absolutely have to God they have to be bad I just stiff them if they are younger. (i have done this maybe 5 times my whole life)

Only once ... but not by choice ...

I was in Viriginia for some training with a unit on Fort Story (itty bitty base, with two buildings for the Marines ... easy to miss if there hadn't been a 10ft by 10ft sign with an obvious 'Marine' emblem ala skull and cross bones ... LOL).  Basically a few days out of the week, and weekends we got liberty to go and do as we please, with curfews in effect .... miss curfew, and you're dropped from the course, no questions!

One day at about 4:30pm, we'd just finished our last "ruck run" (8 miles with 80lbs on our backs ... with a 2hr time limit), and 4 of us "survivors" decided that although our curfew was at 10:30pm, we WERE GOING TO HOOTERS!!!

For any of you familiar with the crowds, it was a Thursday crowd, and it was the beginning of baseball season, so it WAS JAM PACKED!!!  We got lucky, hit the last open table, got a waitress in like 30 seconds, and ordered $80 worth of food and alcohol, with the understanding that weren't done ... we were going to order more by the time she made it back with our order ............. AND, we made sure to inform her, that we would tip, HANDSOMELY!!!

I'm not sure what put her in her mood that day.  Maybe she really hated Marines.  Maybe somebody really did p*ss in her cheerios.  Or, maybe she had just made enough money that week and felt like a 40 dollar tip wasn't going to make much of a difference .....

Whatever the case ... she gave each our pitcher of beer and then she PURPOSELY avoided our table as much as she could the rest of the evening!!  Literally.  She'd walk by, look over at us, and walk off ............. seeing empty pitchers and us motioning!  So we were polite .... luckily, even with the wait, we managed to get the right amount of food each, and the right amount of beer ............... but it was 10pm, and if we weren't in our car in 8 minutes, we weren't going to make it.

My buddy grabbed the money I put on the table as I ran out, and put it in my back pocket as we exited the building ... and as we drove off, they all informed me they opted to leave her a Single Penny, as her tip!!

I still feel a little guilty, but if there was ever a waitress in my entire life who deserved the 1 cent tip .... it was her!!!

Wherever you are, Miss Thang, sorry, but your service was beyond SUCK!!!!!!!!  Hope you got over the fact that you had a table worth $130 and only got a penny!!!

If the service sucks and the attitude stinks, the server doesn't get a tip from me.  I don't care if someone is having a bad day, the last thing the server should do in that case is take it out on his/her customers by being an inconsiderate jerk.  Be a lousy waiter/waitress to me and I'll treat you the same with a lousy or no tip.

Read all the comments, which I seldom do before posting, especially when it gets to this many, so I felt need to give my 2cents. I've worked in the restaraunt business for 22+ years (since  soph. year of college) held every position from dishwasher to now manager of  a highly successful single restaraunt operation, with 60% of our business being tourists. I emphasize to my waitstaff (22 on payroll right now during peak season) that  your check total is not going to necessarily reflect on your tip, your demeanor with that  table from beginning to end is. My staff this summer seems to get that as they(in general) have avg. 20% since May. As for myself  tip wise, I'm a standard 20% avg service, 25% great service, 30% exceptional service. However I have left 15% on more than one occasion when my service has been absolutely horrendous, knowing it was the waiter/waitress fault directly,( usually  happens on vacations) I never complain to the management when this has happened, I just have never gone back(A point I emphasize to my staff happens among  customers other than myself). Wrong  on my part maybe, but thats just me. Seems to get the point across though. :) Love my waitsaff/ bartenders

I'm one of those people who probably tips more than necessary, but I think it's important to be grateful for our servers and show our thanks through gratuities above and beyond what's "expected". As for the quality of service; I always take into account how busy a place is, how well it's staffed (that's not the waitperson's fault if they're taking care of the whole place because it's understaffed), and how late we're there. If I pop in to a restaurant a half hour before they close, I'm going to make damn sure to be as friendly and polite as possible, and tip extremely well. If the place is absolutely packed and the wait staff is stressed and frazzled, I'm going to be extra patient and let them know I'm in no rush. As long as they're even remotely friendly and don't act like my being there is a burden to them, I make sure to take care of them. Never once have I left a place without tipping. I have, however, tipped just the cook before when the wait staff has been rude.

I have done this once, only because I did not bring enough money with me and I did not have a credit card at the time. I told my server about my dilemma and explained I would return with a tip, she said "no problem". I went back around 2 hours later and personally handed the tip to her, plus an extra $10  just for her and being understanding. I always leave a tip though.
I would never
