i quit! (Edited 08/12/10 01:14PM by ms_hippie_queen)

i slept two hours night before last. and not a peep last night. after finding out some bad news in some harmless looking old mail, i decided i have way too many damn things out of my control lately. so i'm taking it out on my smoking. i can at least control...or try to control a bad vice. i've weighed some pros and cons on the powers of quitting and have the following:

pros:

  • lungs return somewhat to pink and squishy
  • my hair, clothes, breath, skin all smell amazingly not smokey
  • i save a sh!t-ton of money (i think it's climbing towards $0.40 a smoke now)
  • my mom won't cry herself to sleep
  • i will run better
  • my little sister will probably follow in suit as she tends to do
  • i won't feel like smokey aunt leigh when i hold my badass nephew
  • i could use this demetri martin quote: "i keep a lighter in my back pocket all the time. i'm not a smoker, i just really like certain songs."
  • i can go on like this for a while....

cons:

  • i will ironically feel like i can't breathe in intense or stressful situations
  • i will probably kill someone
  • i  may fail (which i hate more than spiders)
  • i won't be cool anymore  <----sarcasm

i'm here asking ex-smokers how they did it, how they got through it and any advice at all. pep talk will also be nice. i thrive on that motivational junk. who knows? maybe some of you other smokers out there may wanna jump on this health train: hoot-hooooooooooooooot! *cough, hack, gasp...*

I quit smoking in Feb '93, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in Nov '93, watching that take him out 11 months later sealed the deal for me. I was a REFORMED smoker for a while, mostly from watching someone I loved die a slow death right before my eyes, I learned to ease up off of folks. I don't harp on folks who smoke but I am more than happy to encourage the ones who want to or have quit. It is hard, not going to lie, but I believe 26 years old is a lovely age to stop smoking. Good luck Leigh... BTW, keep the lighter, I do.

Good luck, i Have a freind who has been weaning himself off of it.  hes has this idea that if he only takes a smoke when hes in disire need for one that sooner or later his body will become less dependant on it, and adventually he wont need it.

"I won't be cool anymore."-------------------------   I don't think smoking makes you look cool. If anything it gives away your secrets and let's people know more about you.

I've typed about my dad a lot on this site (just insert my dad to Beans story of his dad, and there you go) so I'm not going to do it now. Good luck Leigh! I'm thinking you are strong enough and motivated enough to quit.

i quit cold turkey.  I just stopped.  I guess will power.  and i was smoking lucky strike non-filters.

as for the not cool part, i basically lose interest in a girl as soon as I find out she smokes, despite what others may say about oral fixations.

I tried smoking when I was 10 years old....and found out that I would never be able to play professional football/baseball/hockey for the Rams/Yankees/Rangers, so I never tried it again. The only smoking I do now is second hand.

Quitting is the easy part, I have quit numerous times. The hard part is not starting up again. These are my triggers, work, I work with a lot of of smokers so it is hard to take breaks with other people and not smoke. Friends, a lot of my friends smoke so hanging out with them is difficult. Drinking, I enjoy a good cigarette with my alcoholic beverages, so no matter how long it may have been since my last cigarette, I always desire one when I am drinking.

But I have faith that you can do it, all night long! Good Luck Leigh!

In 2004 I developed double pneumonia.  I didn't take care of it right away and was VERY sick.  Even after my lungs healed, I coughed and coughed every single morning, so I decided to quit.  The way I did it was to keep myself really busy and put the smokes somewhere where I really had to work to get to them (we live out of town and I have a big shed in my back yard - I put a pack in the Christmas decorations, at the very bottom)  If I REALLY needed one, I could get one, but 9 times out of 10 by the time I got out to where they were, I lost interest in the smokes.  It took me a while to really quit, and now if I have a craving for one, I indulge.  Usually I put it out just as quickly as I lit it, but I CAN have the occasional smoke if I am having a drink without starting up full force again.

Oh and I started at 12.

Good luck Leigh and keep at it!! If you really really want to, you can do it!  BTW, I pay for my gel nails, brow waxing and pedicures with the money I saved, plus I allow myself one "luxury" purchase every couple of months.  And I still have money left over.

Good News:  You can totally do it, Leigh.  You're my sister and we triplets are a tough bunch of bitches.

Bad News:  I totally can't do it.  I've tried.  Many times.    I will eventually try again ... perhaps fail ... then dust myself off a go at it yet again.  Hey, at least it's nowhere near as bad as the other stuff I used to do.

that's the crazy part. i loooove smoking, the actual act of breathing so deeply and blowing it in someone's face if they are annoying. love it. other stuff i didn't have problems getting off. i would become a nicotene whore if it wasn't s'damn pathetic...i'd spend child support money on a carton of marlboro light 100's.

boo. 12 hours and i'm nic-ing bad. just did research. it said my symptoms will peak at 48 hours and last only 6-8months. blow it out your ass, symptoms website. i have to actually not smoke for 48 hours and THEN suffer? i am panicking a little bit. my brain's on fire. i am so gung ho about this sh!t, but i could eat a cigarette right now.

i so didn't sign up for 6-8 months. can any quitters here please tell me (lie to me if you have to) and tell me it wasn't 6 months?

i'm whining. i know. sorry.

I'm the same way ... I will cut a bitch for a cigarette, I swear I will.  And, I too, love smoking.  Like a lot.  More than I should.
As for the symptoms, I didn't make it that long, but I CAN tell you this ... after one day, you'll notice a difference.  I was able to take a deep breath without that smoker's tickle in  your throat that makes you want to wheeze and/or cough and/or punch yourself in the neck to ease the discomfort.

You got this.

I still crave a cigarette.  My dad quit 25 years ago.  He still craves them.  Especially after dinner.  I don't think about it too often, though.
#33 | 1450 days ago

I don't smoke.. I used to be a casual smoker (read: have a couple when drinking) but that stopped once they outlawed smoking in bars

But I do dip, damn baseball hobby turned lifelong addiction ... and I've quit about 73 times.. but it really is a stress reliever for me, and it's so good
nonetheless, I think you should quit, and best of luck

Medical studies show that lung cancer is past down through genes, But you do get emphysema from Smoking sucking that smoke through fiber glass insulation/filter. I have quit several times the patch does seem to help, So if you are serious about quitting this maybe a good option as you really don't have to wear them everyday. As far as it starting to peak at 48 hours and lasting 6-8 months that seems a little over kill. If you make it for 1 week the worst is over.

BEST OF LUCK , YOU CAN DO IT

it would be so easy to lie to you folks and say "this is so dang easy!" and come off as some sort of superhuman cigarette quitter. i broke at 12:37 this morning. one ass at work gave me what i have inappropriately dubbed a "smokey sanchez" where he ran a smoke right under my nose, across my lip. it was heavenly. the smoking it was disappointing. i have had one hiccup and need to be better. i'm pretty embarrassed at just how easily i crumbled. i still own none though and i got paid today. i am really proud of myself there. i just want to sleep straight through this week and wake up not needing one.

Don't think of this negatively as a failure...look positively at this.  Had you been still smoking, how many would you have smoked in this time period?

Try to extend these periods out, until you no longer require smoking, and you will succeed.

The only thing that made me decide not to smoke is... wringkles! I dont want to look older than my age,  All of my friends younger than me look 5 -10 years older.  And I would love to look good inside my coffin
kidding aside - I did a survey last year and all non-smokers have better skin and teeth than smokers.

I smoked 3 packs a day, in the 1970s. I stopped in the 80s after 12 years. I started lightly again in the 90s. I stopped after 1 yr.
started again in the 2000s, very lightly, about 10 a week. A yr ago I started smoking electric cigs, (Ok, now I'm starting to feel like a damn electric cigarette salesman) I smoke maybe 3 non-electric cigs a month. So far its working. I'm not sure if its for everybody, but, its working for me. What changed my mind is, remembering my aunts and uncles go down one at a time, in their 50s,....... if lucky enough, in their 60s. Its not worth it. Its poison. The worst kind.

i had to get a new doc in dec '05 and as part of his new patient physical he sent me for a chest x-ray.  when it came back there was a spot on my left lung.  so i went to a pulmunonary specialist who gave a the good news.  he needed to perform endoscopy in my lung.  they lay you in a super dentist chair.  knock your ass out and then send lights, camera and knife down your throat into your lung to cut out the spot.  then the fun begins; the waiting.  7 long days, i wait and got more nervous and scared.  i made the decision at day 3 to quit.  COLD TURKEY baby.  the results came back negative (Praise to God) and it will now be five years this Jan that i have quit.

My husband quit...a few times. I've never been a smoker, but I've had to watch him battle so I do know that it can't be easy. This time he quit (he's been done for quite a while) he just decided he was done, and that was that. Pretty much cold turkey. Before that, he'd tried Chantix, Nicorette, Nicoderm CQ, etc. Now he just chews a lot of Trident Layers gum when he feels he needs one. I wish you the best of luck, and I know you can do it!

Let's add one more "pro" up there...No enhancement/acceleration of wrinkles. You're gorgeous...you don't want those nasty lines around your lips by the time you're 30.

The best thing to do, is think of it as a killer. Cigs kill. Another thing is, if its a holding something fixation. hold an unlit cig, all day. I fiddled with a pencil sometimes, which helped me. there ARE alternatives. ANYTHING is better than smoking. When I seen my aunt die at the tender age of 59, and thought, she could have lived another 20-30 years all because of a small piece of paper and some leafs. NOT WORTH IT. Hang in there.
