E-Read My Lips... (Edited 08/16/10 04:56PM by Jess)
So, I'm thinking about getting one of those fancy-schmancy E-Readers.   I'm a bookworm and I've compiled a mental list of pros/cons, as follows,  to getting one:
Pros:  Easy to tote along (no need to lug around several books on the just in case), holds thousands of books, downloading books is fast and easy and (from what I hear) cheaper than buying an actual book, no need to buy yet another bookshelf for my already over-booked house.
Cons:  I just don't know if I can get used to reading a book on a little reader thing like that (e-books were a big enough struggle for me), and I'm a weirdo about actually having the book in my hands and owning it (I'm a collector ... or pack-rat ... whatever).

So, basically, I want to know who has one, what kind you have, do you like it, and what are some pros/cons that I have missed?  Discuss.

LOL this is funny...I've had this conversation with a couple of different people over the past month or so. My husband was going to get me one for Christmas but he decided against it because he knows how I feel about books (I'm a collector too...and I love the smell, sound, feel, etc. of a new, and old, book). That said, here's my final take after a lo-o-o-ot of thinking:

Still collect the classics. Anything that you want to have in your collection, take mine for example; Complete Works of Shakespeare, anything Greek Mythology or Greek History, Hans Christian Andersen, and then a few like Dante's Inferno, Divine Comedy, Beowulf, Aesop's Fables, poetry collections by people like Maya Angelou, Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes (I could go on forever), and then collectible novel series from authors you REALLY like.

E-Book anything else you want to just pick up and read...something you'd generally buy in paperback for $7 here and there from random authors and genres you like. That way you're not collecting a bunch of paperbacks that take up more room than they need...and in reality, paperbacks aren't much bigger (and in most cases smaller) than one of those Nooks or something. Plus, you can adjust the screen, and zoom in etc. when you need to.

A) You don't have one.
B) You have the same questions I do.
C) You don't know anyone that does have one.

I'm sure it'll be tough, but I think maybe I'll try to get some more helpful input from others.  Butthead.

Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, etc.

Look at electronics store websites (such as Best Buy, or Amazon.com for the Kindle.).

I have tons of books------------mostly children's and history ones which I will still purchase in book-form.

However, I was planning on getting one for the reason Jess just listed above. I'm getting tired of packing them up in boxes and donating them to the local library and such. I think it would take some time getting use to though.

Dear Janet,

I did not think it was possible to love you more. But I guess anything is possible. You were already the perfect woman and now you top it off by being a bookworm and you are smart enough to compile a mental list? Stop it, please. My heart cannot take it. Would you like to join a book club with me? and perhaps go for some coffee?

As to answer your question:  I thought about getting the kindle and then when I saw I could get it on my phone I was thinking of that too. But I haven't broke down and did it yet. But if I do I will let you know what I think. I have downloaded a couple of apps on my phone and started to read some books on there but it was very annoying. Just too small. And I kind of did miss the "book" feel. So I am in no rush to get the kindle or whatever the f*ck the other ones are. And that chick Jess made a good point. Listen to her, she's smart.

So anyway, nice seeing you again. Until we talk again, I'll be dreaming about you.

my momma just got one for her birthday last week and it's the coolest thing i've ever seen. it's the one called nook. i thought they were like ipods, all backlit and stuff, but it looks like a piece of newspaper was slipped under the screen and there no light at all. you can change the font size which is sweet for folks who wear glasses but hate to wear em when they're relaxing (or reading). and if you like to play sudoku, it's got that on there too. win.

I would say the Nook. My daughter has one and I use it all the time. Its great. I still buy books like classics, I too love reading. But for the paperbacks its great. A lot of the time they have specials and it can be cheaper to buy for your nook!! It's pretty awesome.

except for the comic section that we refer to as Locker Room, if i want to read it needs to be on paper with ink. ( glossy full page color pics of totally naked women is an acceptable alternative.)  no text required.

If I was a reader that is what I would want. I have downloaded books as PDF files on my laptop to read. The cool thing about the readers is that they travel well. It was very convenient for those on the subway, buses, and in the waiting rooms I have seen over the past 6 months.

I don’t own one, but I have heard good things about it.  Most of the good things involve the easy access, the large capacity of books on it, and the small size of the item.  Those are good things if you are always on the go, but I’m kind of old fashioned.

I like the fact that I can pick up a book whenever I want.  I like the feeling of the pages on my fingers, and the smell of the ink!  I like having shelves of books because it can be a conversation starter whenever someone new comes to me house.   I like stopping at a certain point, which is normally hours after I should’ve, but the suspense of action sucked me in!  I like using bookmarks and writing little notes just for me in them.

Yep, I am old fashioned, but I like that about me!

Sounds like you like the same kind of books I like - I give myself a certain time to stop, or by a certain chapter, and next thing you know it's hours later and I'm either finished with the book or just about finished and can't put it down. Action, suspense, thriller, mystery - those are the kinds of little novels I pick up that I'd probably end up getting on the reader instead.

I can understand getting a reader. I fly quite a bit so having the little reader instead of 10 books would be helpful, but it's the little things I also enjoy about having a book in my hand. If the reader had those little things, then I would go out right now and get one. ;p

It does seem like we like the same kind of books! Cool! Yes, it is a really hard choice. It always is when you have to choose between the small size to the little things of why you love books to begin with. Really though, most people enjoy them because of the story or how it makes them feel reading it and I am one of those types. It's just hard to let it go...the ink, bindings, and the texture of the pages!

My buddy has one and swears by it. Says he'll never buy a regular book again, and won't even borrow a book from me he wants to read. He'd rather wait and get it on his e-book. I'd like to give one a try, and see how I like it myself. Working the midnight shift I usually go through a book every week or so.
