When I was a kid, my mother and step-father employed a group of around 20 homeless people to work on remodeling their mansion. They were given jobs like painting, stripping wallpaper, carrying supplies, and wood working. On top of their pay, they were also rewarded with a spare home that my step-dad owned, that was turned into a shelter for these guys to live in for their hard work.

if i have cash, i will fork it over. i am not going to judge what they do with it. it's more to inspire hope than to go toward any financial responsibilities.

Most of them make more money than all of us in here.  Anybody see that 20/20 or Dateline special on panhandlers.  Many are legit but many more are a scam.  You have to do what your heart tells you to do.

Usually I do, there is one guy that sits in the bed of a truck by a traffic light near where I work with a sign homeless talking on a cell phone.
#4 | 1342 days ago

No because there are more and more everyday. Get a job like everybody else. Scams, I was going to check with the local laws about this. There is a # they call out over speakers in some stores that means to go get rid of such people

I get hit up for cash from bums 3-10 times a day. I really love it when they're standing near a store with a help wanted sign in the window.
I know the PC term is homeless, but I still call it like I see it.
They're bums.

No doubt there are scammers out there but I also know there people who legitimately need a hand. That being said, I give when I'm in the mood...and I also think in the end, the kharma thing will even things out.

I did once see a lady helping a homeless guy out by offering to buy him a coffee. The dude had the nuts to ask her to make it a vanilla hazelnut. Contrary to popular belief, it appears that beggars can be choosers.

I do not hand my Money Out, I work hard for it. I may suggest a good Church to them so they can get a meal.

I usually try to buy them some food. If I see them and there is a fast food place around!

thanks Joe!!

It annoys me, mainly because I'm poor. But there was one at a gas station, who offered to pump my gas, sang me a song about just wanting a pizza and some fries and all he needed was a dollar, with a little dance included. I think i gave him all the cash i had though he was getting nerves.

you have to "read the room" as it were. where i used to work, 20 years ago,  lots of panhandlers.  most  had the expensive team jackets, overpriced basketball shoes and cell phones. and a lot were higher than a kite on drugs.  sorry sparky you ain't gettin a dime. if they look truly needy i'll help.

That's the way people should help if they can. I know there are many people really in need, but some others are just lazy. A friend of mine offered a job to a group of men that were asking for money and they laugh and say, no thanks, we don't want to work, that's why we do this, I couldn't believe it.

No, I have spare change like my car has a spare tire. Sure, I may not need it at that exact moment in time. But I never do know when I will need it, and if I give it to you/them. Then I won't have it when I need it.

Of course you will, but ALL CAPS tend to run together, and my eyes were tired since i sit in front of a computer ALL DAY (it's also bad etiquette to yell everything you say, but i know people have told you that before and you dont care), so i asked for help. No big deal, i got the question, and i answered, do what you do..,and i dont know about blessed, but my day was great just the same.

No.   I have 4 kids and bills to pay.   While there may be change jingling in my pocket, none of it is "spare", not even the pennies.

See, and I prefer my homeless beggars to perform a little.  I worked for my money, the least you can do is put forth a little effort to get it from me.
In all seriousness, one of my fondest sports-related memories is going to the old Yankee Stadium and hanging out outside of the stadium before the games and watching street performers (most of them homeless, many of them disabled) singing, dancing, playing an instrument, and so on for spare change.  I loved seeing/hearing the musicians perform when I was a little girl.  It got to the point where my parents would remind me to bring change from my piggy bank for them since I always wanted to drop money into their cases.  I would look forward to watching them perform more than the game itself!

My favorite was going to Hollywood, And they had performers doing different things music, magic, mimes. I don't know that they still do this it was back around 1980 and I did give some donations because there were doing more than just begging, Fun times
