Cell Phones-Menace or Necessary Evil (Edited 08/23/10 09:25AM by )
Last week, I left my cell phone home on my longest work day (Tuesday).  I normally leave the house at 7 and get home around 7 or 8 at night.  I felt like it was 1993 again.  Believe it or not...it felt NICE not to have texts/calls/messages.  As I drove from one office to the other, I actually listened to the RADIO.  So, Q'ers, can you survive without your phone?  I did for a day.

I have one,   I  use it,   its not attached to me nor do I sleep with it.

However the next person I see at the theater that insists on texting or doing whatever  with their phone during the movie at the theater will have their phone jammed down their throats.

I  dont take mine with me a lot, and it doesn't bother me a bit. Oh and if I ever go to jail for something it will be because I have done bodily injury to someone that is texting while driving.

the cell phone has become an integral part of the modern man, it is very necessary to keep up with the news
and all the activities that is going around us. We should always keep a cell phone handy in case of emergencies
#4 | 1433 days ago

I can and do live without one.   I carry one with me when i leave the house in case of an emergency.  Nobody has the number so they can't call me as i don't turn it on anyway unless i am going to use it.

I took a canoe trip earlier this summer and left my phone at home.  Simply put, it was awesome.  I have 'accidentally' forgotten my phone at work over the weekend a few times as well.  I love the convenience of a cell phone, but sometimes it's a pain in the a*s.

I Can't live without mine at all. I sometimes have about 500 text a day. Between my kids, and B/F  that is easily done.  Good thing I am on a Friends and Family plan now or I would go over my minutes ( like I did last month)  They only thing I hate about my Cell is that because it is a smart phone, I need internet service. I dont use it that often.. ok, maybe I do. But that is another 35 to my bill each month..

Yeah, I can't live without it, but I can live without the high cell bill each month...

I tend to accidently leave my cell phone at home!  I don't like letting people know I even have a cell phone.  If they knew at work, they would call me all the time.  I just tell them all I have in a home phone, if I don't answer then I'm not there!  Ok, so I screen my calls, who doesn't at home?!?!

I don't use it all times only when time of emergencies, important notices, or lost contact with questionaries lol.  I just find it too costly so in fairness,  I just cut down the expenses when I don't have to use it all times other reason my teen sons lawdy knows they are mobile/ text addicts i called them " zombimobilliza"  = translation teen zombie cant live with their mobile device!   I am hearing impaired so not all mobiles dont have the capability for hearing.  I get fussy of losing the sound.  Other times its an evil device too you get  some strange calls. I don't even pick it up if not familiar with the numbers it can easily steal your info.

Hell, I don't know how I could live without a smart phone nevermind a cell...

There've been weekends that I put my cell phone in my bat bag Saturday mornings and I'll get it out Sunday nites. Yes, I agree that it feels nice not having calls/messages. I can survive without a cell phone.

amen, and I have told both of my daughters how do you expect me to live when a highway patrolmen comes to my door, and tells me your life wasn't worth more to you than a text message.  It scares me worse than anything else as far as they go.

Cellphones to me are like wireless collars on your body. Most of the time they are a menace but some times they can save life(s).

My "crackberry" is just that.  It is my leash.

The only time I am not using it or that it is not attached to me:

a. when I am having fun or a "goodtime".
b.  the restroom (eww - germs)
c. while driving (thats what a blu-tooth is for)
d. in class
e. sleeping (on nightstand, by my head)

So it is mildly addicting, I think of better things to do with my time
#19 | 1433 days ago

For me, it's a necessary evil. I will say this, I do not text nor do I talk while driving.

...And is it just me, or is the person on the phone while driving the exact same person who is going 20 mph below the speed limit in the fast lane (ARRRRGHH!!). If I ever get sent to jail and I wasn't protecting my family, I followed that slow driving idiot home and did a "Richard Pryor" to their car...
Wait, that wasn't the question (but it felt REAL GOOD). Yes I can live without my cell phone.

I wouldn't even call it a necessary evil, its more like a wanted evil.
They put all these other features and apps on phones to make you feel you have to have one

I don't feel the want or need to have people able to be in contact with me all the time.
Nobody calls anymore anyway, they'd rather constantly text you (very annoying) when we could have said all we needed to say in one 5 minute call.

And I'm still waiting for that "emergency" to happen where having a cell phone helps me out.
I CAN do without it

I never text while driving, heck can hardly do it when standing still. Besides too many lives lost or accidents by those who insist on doing it.

Mine is off most of the time anyway.  I barely use it...  And since the CA Hands free law came into place a couple of years ago, I couldn't use it in my car.  Although my new car has bluetooth built in so that is no longer an issue.  I have one of those new fangled "smart phones" now.  But I don't use the phone part nearly as much as the other things.....

In California...  That IS the law...

But...  I disagree with it.  Seems to me the phone is no less distracting than fiddling with the radio or CD's....

I also find that those map nav systems in cars are WAY more distracting than a cell phone ever could be....

#29 | 1433 days ago

I was well on my way to being a Luddite, no cell phone, no home phone, and no cable TV, for a couple of years. Then one day at work someone came up and asked me what was going on with the family, said my dad was just called out because one of his kids had an aneurysm. I had to borrow a cell to make some calls. Turned out everything was all right, but now I have a $45.00 a month paper weight, just in case.

I love my phone! I have it with me always. As far as the CA law...it is legal to talk as long as you use a bluetooth or something similar. There are other distractions while driving that are just as dangerous, like people that eat, or women that are putting mascara on while trying to drive!!

I never understood why it's an "emergency" when the mobile phone that you didn't have the first 20, 30 or 50 years of your life, isn't on you.

I keep mine on me most of the time and will even check out updates on this website and Facebook on my phone or play card games, when I'm out waiting in line or something. I also play music off it by connecting it to my car's stereo.

Here's my first phone...got it in 1994

If you got a call, there was no caller id...no voicemail...no call waiting.  It did NOT fit in your pocket.  I had a plan-$25/month, .50 per minute home, $0.99 per minute roaming.  My home area was Ocean County, NJ-the county where I live.  Bills were high..  Only shared number with family.  Battery lasted all of 10 hours.  Had it 5 years, though....

my cell phone is the lesser of two evils.....first off , i wouldnt be able to keep my driver's license if i didnt have one, becaus ei get dystonic seizures and i have aqbout a 10 minute window before they can be full body...so the compromise with my doc was to carry one, and if i feel a seizure comin gon, i can pull over safely within that window and call 911...completely fair and livable on both our parts......also i keep it on me when i walk alone in case i fall , or am out side doing yard work.. again, in case i have a episode.....other than that...when i am around my home, in relax mode, it is no on me....they sure are a convenience& a nuisance though!

Yes, I take mine everywhere I go but when I get sick of mine ringing or beeping from a text that  I don't want to answer, I just  put it on silent but to tell the truth no I can't do without mine for a day. You know that phone can be your best friend or your worst enemy!!!!!!!!! (You make  the choice)............................
#36 | 1432 days ago

i only carry mine when i'm expecting an important call or messages, though i admit that it's also important to always carry it with you (in case of emergency, you can use it to call for help)

I use my cell instead of a land line, now. It's nice when travelling, especially if you break down or something. The use of in an emergency is the best aspect of having one.

I have a Blackberry.  It is my portable computer. I use it for banking, weather updates (I work at a golf course, sometimes I WANT to know if I am going to get rained on), texting my kids, calling my hubby, texting my best friend who is going thru a divorce and suffering thru her ex's neuroses, just about anything and everything it can be used for, games, music, pictures, videos.

I have had it for six months and honestly don't know how I managed, with just a plain ol' cell phone before.  And like icfeet, I got my first phone, same as his, way back when.  My kids both have phones, as does my hubby.  Our family plan isn't too bad, as it also includes my internet access.  For all four phones, unlimited calls and texting, internet access and of course, the extra stuff, we pay about $260 a month.  We barely use the home phone, and that bill is only about $20.

I hate to say it but my cell is attached to me always. I am a divorce mother of 3 kids who live on their own.  I always want to be accessible to them and I do not have a landline so this is the only phone I have.  ALWAYS use hands free if talking in car, its the law in Jersey!!

Like everything, cell phones too have their bright and dark sides.  Many of you above have aptly pointed out both of these.  I can only add that if used prudently, cell phones, or for that matter any inventions and discoveries that make life somewhat easy and interesting to live, are a boon - like you have said, a necessary evil.
#45 | 1431 days ago

After trying to find my mother in the Miami airport a few days ago, I have to go with "Necessary Evil". How in the WORLD did we get by without them? (I know, we had ways...but geez)

When i sit at my desk in my office, I am in the only dead spot in the whole building. LOL!  What annoys me the most is whenever I call my wife or kids, they never answer, never listen to the voice mail and sometimes I am lucky if they call me back. I really could do without the high bill.

I work at home, so it's really not necessary for me to keep chargers all over the place but I do anyway. There's one always by my computer, one in my room, and one plugged in on one of my kitchen counters. And there's always one plugged in in my car. OK Maybe I'm just lazy.

I can live without my cell phone, but I always have it with me for emergency purposes. Having kids and a hubby that worries, when I am alone, gives me a need for the phone.
#53 | 1426 days ago

It is the only phone I have. I like because I can take it with me, ad not have to worry about call forwarding.
#54 | 1420 days ago

My iPhone is always with me and I use it all the time. Chargers are in three rooms and in the cars. I don't have to carry my laptop with me anymore. I'm much more responsive to clients with it. It's even with me on the night stand while sleeping; okay, maybe I am addicted to it thanks for pointing this out, lol.

That could be because it is likely you have been driving with a car radio far longer than with a cell phone.

Texting is one thing.  But just holding a phone to your ear is hardly more dangerous than watching the map on the GPS or fiddling with radio dials or CD's....
