Express Yourself (Edited 09/09/10 03:06PM by Jess)
I'm not going to say it's going to happen, but IF it did....

Let's pretend we sectioned off the Locker Room from everything else. Let's say you still had the option to give a comment a "Respect" and have it count against your quota, because it's just that good. Now let's say that you also have other ways to show your appreciation for a comment - a couple of different buttons (let's limit it to 3) that express a different form of appreciation, such as Smart, Funny, and Bold.

You also have a way to show your dislike for a comment. What would you like that to be?

None of the expression buttons count toward your quota for anything and don't count toward any competition. Have fun with it...

I remember those.   If we were only limited to 3, for hypothetical sake, definitely the smart and funny.    Bold and the PQ never bothered me, but since many people voiced their opinions, I guess the PQ, but never anonymous, and never blanking out the comment, unless the option to reveal it was there.   Anything that violates the C.O.C. harshly enough would already be deleted, so that wouldn't matter. (Unless enough people PQ a comment before the mods get a chance to see it.)

Can i get a "You're doing it wrong?
"Really?" (of course, YOU know I want mine to say "F'n REALLY?"
and a button that simply says WOW

I just bought more respects because of this poll.

Smart & Funny or Thumbs Up would be great... and if there was a PQ or Thumbs down I don't think it should be hidden or anonymous - if I desire anonymity then I would keep quiet. I have to agree with Norse's thought that comments or threads with no replies or respects is obvious enough that it was not that good/intelligent/funny (or whatever). If people respect (or whatever the buttons are) I like knowing who it was.

I believe having Smarts, Funnys, and PQs (with a geotag reference) would work.

Smart, funny  and a thumbs down would be just great. Or keep the ones we used to have.  No points or bucks for them would be fine also.  We just need a way to express ourselves without having to reply to each comment.

Bring back the PQ button but this time call it Fail

And I like Kat's suggestion of replacing Bold with Wow!

After perusing the Sports Bar a lot over the past week I am thinking differently about Respects than I did with the original change. I like the intent of limiting them and the ability to "purchase" more. However, on seeing what comments are getting respected, and some medals are being awarded for them.... ouch - maybe 10 is too many. I'm not suggesting changing anything in regards to the quantity of respects or the option to purchase more, but these additional buttons may go a long way in making those medals earned honestly rather than the cheap wins some get now. If the Sports Bar medals continue to be won primarily by respected comments - I don't think you will ever get everyone play it the way it was envisioned. Some just don't think, or understand, or maybe they do "get it" but out of spite they do the opposite of what was intended.

I have to agree with Cuddles that sometimes we just need a way to show a quick opinion without posting a response to a comment or even a Poll (from the Locker Room or Sports sectors).

My point is, maybe these buttons should be considered throughout the site, and not just the Locker Room. Then at that point maybe 10 Respects will be too many for 75% of the members here.

An option requesting "explain further" or "more detail": someone can probably be more succinct with the options because that's the best I could do from my original thoughts of "needs clarification" or "provide reference".

- I really like suggestion for "Wow"
Others:
- "Well said"
- "I concur" or "agreed"
- "hmmmmm...."
- For the really bad ones perhaps a "Nuke it" option should be made available.

Personally, I would like to keep it positive.  For those who don't, having a post with no accolades between other posts with several should be enough of an indication as to the lack of regard for their post.  If an oppositional response is included, I would be extremely disappointed if it was allowed to remain anonymous.  Any individual selecting such should be able to provide an explanation as to the "why" behind their sentiment.  Or, perhaps just an option for: "Sorry, I don't agree".

Then again, it would be a great boost for me personally if there is an option that states:
"I want to be Kjartan's love machine"

(Sorry, I had to include a reference to my first favorite W.A.S.P. song....)

"I want to be Kjartan's love machine" doesn't exactly roll of the tongue....  Substitute Husker for Kjartan, then you have something.

Otherwise, your post was good.  I give it an "I concur".

Speak for yourself... I don't think 10 is enough for me.

I am just flipping you some sh!t.  I know what you are saying.  I agree.... I get respected probably when I shouldn't..    I would probably get lots of Wow's or PQ's...  Just as long as I am respected in the morning, I don't care..
