Digital Cameras
I came into a little bit of disposable income, and want to buy a digital camera.  I am not a professional, just tired of taking pics of my kids with camera phone at big events.  I would like to get a Sony Cybershot, but that is basically because I like how they look, and I like sony.  Price is somewhat of an object, so keep it under $300.  FanIQ'ers, help me buy a camera.

I've got an Olympus Camedia D-435.  It takes great pics and has all the features I need.

Another factor in buying a camera is what type of media cards (if any) do you own?  I try to purchase SecureDigital (SD card) devices, 'cause I have 4 or 5 of these cards.... Fuji uses a xD card and Sony uses MemoryStick memory-- both of these are proprietary to their brands....

As far as camera types, I have a Samsung 8MP camera, I chose it for price (>$150) and it uses NiMH rechargeable AA batteries-- takes wonderful pics!   I also know people who own Casio and Canon cameras and are very happy with both too.....

Pentax W30. It's waterproof, durable, and takes nice pictures. 7 Megapixels, 3x zoom, and you should be able to get it for under $250. It's definitely worth it. It's nice to be able to go to a game in the rain, or go hiking, swimming, or anything, and not have to worry about your camera at all.

I have to back up what IndyDave said.  The type of media card and type of batteries is a big deal for me.  The Sony Memory stick has kept me away from their stuff.  Unless you have a sony laptop and camcorder.  Not a big deal and Sony makes good stuff but usually not the cheapest.

The type of battery I found out the hard way.  My old kodak uses a proprietary Li-Ion battery.  If it dies I have to recharge or grab my 2nd.  So try to get a camera that uses the standard form factor battery.  So if you have to you can put in plain old AA or AAA batteries.

I have a Cannon digital camera ( Powereshot S2) that I am very happy with.  It was a little higher than your price limit, like $350 or so.  But this is a nice one well within your budget.

takes a 7.1 MP picture wich is pretty good, better than the camera phone you are currently using.

can get extra memory cards if you fill one up, comes with a 16Mb card, figure about 1Mb per picture, with the money you save you could buy another say 250Mb memory card and a battery charger with extra betteries.

Check this out, here is a camera that is on sale at Best Buy it's a 12.1MP which has 3x optical zoom and digital image stabilization (very important, you don't want blurry pictures.)

I have the Sony Cybershot DSC-P7 and love it.  I have had it for about 5 years now and love it.  It is easy to use and I think that I paid $250 for it then.  http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/p7.html

Oh yeah, gotta live thru the pain of having to kick out $50 for a proprietary battery to find the beauty in using AA batteries for sure!

I'd say look at the size of the camera also-- I was very interested in a high-zoom Kodak model (10x optical) so I bought it, and all I had to do was take it to one football game to figure out just how LARGE the camera was-- it was kick ass for the long distance shot, but try lugging that bad boy around for 3 hours or so.....
