What rules changes would make sports more interesting?
I was watching the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs play to a tie last night in regulation.  As I was relieved that the Rangers would get at least one point in the standings, I got to wondering....Shouldn't a team be given MORE points in the standings if they win in regulation?  What other rules "tweaks" could be made to make things more interesting?

I have said this before and did a poll on it  .....I think NFL needs a set, say 10 minute overtime rule,,opposed to a coin toss

I agree with you Doc. Regulation wins should get 3 points, OT or shoot out wins should get 2 points, and just making it to OT and the shoot out but losing should only get you 1 point.

I think that in order to keep teams from playing safe in the NHL they should give 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an overtime/shootout win.  This way, teams won't just "coast" to get to overtime.

In football....I always thought it would be neat if on a kickoff, the kicking team could get 1 point if the kicker puts it through the uprights.  The drawback to that?  The ball would be placed at the 40 or 45 yardline, so it would only be advantageous in certain situations.

As for the Hockey rule...On the fence but see how a regulation win could mean more...then again, in every other sport, a win is a win and doesn't mean any more if it's done in OT or Extra Innings.

The rule I would LOVE to see changed is to dump the DROP THIRD STRIKE RULE!  I HATE, HATE, HATE that rule!  If a player swings and misses at strike 3, especially if it's a wicked splitter or  sinker, they should not have the chance of reaching base safely if the catcher can't hang on to the ball.  I understand that every out must be made in the glove but, I'm sorry, you strike out, YOU'RE OUT, whether it's caught or not!

See, I'm getting all hot and bothered just typing about it on here  (lol)

Hockey games (and any other sport, for that matter) would not ever end in a tie.  And I would do away with the point system entirely.  The only stat that would count (on a teams season) would be Ws & Ls.  Wins and losses only.  No points at all, except for the game scores themselves.

And the NFL overtime is fine just the way it is.   The NCAA should adopt it as well.

Basball should start in May and be over with by Labor Day.  Playoffs and World Series should be finished before Sept. 30.

In baseball, limit relief pitching. Starting pitchers must go either 8 innings minimum or until 10 runs have been scored by opposing team. Also, make the average game time a tidy 2 hours 15 minutes by shortening between-innings time, banning managers' and catchers' visits to mound, etc.

In football, I think it'd be cool if each team had to choose 11 players to play the game and those 11 had to play the whole game, the entire 60 minutes, both offense and defense and special teams with no substitutions, except for injuries (in which case the opposing team is able to choose the substitute to replace the injured player).

Don't get me started.....Nascar has gotten so screwed up in the last 10 years, I wouldn't even know where to start. Football, let them dance in the end zone, dannng!, for some teams it is a Miracle....I am not in agreement with Coach Cowher, celebrate it might be the only one....

I sure do miss the football players dancing, turning flips, and dunking the football over the goal post. I believe the #1 rated tv show in the land right now is "Dancing With The Stars",so this should tell the NFL something.

JEWELRY!!! Take that crap off! Who was the Cowboy that lost his ear ring during practice? Practice! I'm feeling a young Allen Iverson interview coming. The earring was something like $75k or some outrageous price. Why is he wearing jewelry anyway? Name me a professional woman's sport where they wear jewelry; not even beach volleyball! If women aren't wearing jewelry why are the guys! Come on fellas.

On the same note, the uniform. If these athletes get paid an obscene amount of money to play a sport why  can't they have more respect for the jersey. As a referee, its so hard (especially youth) to correct the way the uniform is displayed. If the pro's get away with it, good luck teaching the people that idolize them.

If league commissioners are going to penalize and fine players for excessive celebration (which is part of the game) then why not enforce something for appearance?

Football playoffs (NFL and NCAA). Can someone please get this crap straight? I can't stand the way the playoff system works! If you lead your division your in. Seahawks and Steelers Superbowl should never have happened. Some years divisions are so weak, others, all the contenders fall in the same group. Any team in one group could be Superbowl winners but "there can be only one".

NCAA, anything is better than what they have now. Why can't they adopt a better play off system. The debate is money and TV time...really? All the college educated people who make these standings can't come up with something better?
How is money an issue if so much money is made just for a regular season game, much less a bowl game. Also, if the money wasn't there then how do we have so many bowl games? It's beginning to be just as hard to name all the bowl games as naming all 50 states (not even talking capitals).
If there is a 2 week break before bowl games and a month before BCS Championship why can't that time be used to play? If you have undefeated teams or 1 loss but high in power rankings play for it! Take the politics out of bowl games?

The money is there and it puts the "what ifs" aside.

However, I do think football and NCAA basketball should play 2 out of three. You shouldn't live and die by one game. Takes the luck out.

Basketball (especially NBA Playoffs) can someone please define what is/ isn't a foul? One drive to the basket attacker gets mauled no whistle, live ball results in a fast breaks, attacker gets touched on the wrist or chest...foul! Two free throws after the blood gets cleaned from the other side.

In football, they do have 11 players that play offense, defense and special teams the difference is in the US we call it soccer. Aussies call it rugby.

NASCAR should adopt a "rodeo" rule. If a rider can stay on the bull for 8 seconds and be declared awesome, then I think (esp. for ratings and non-NASCAR supporters) pick one driver to go right for 20 seconds. That would be the greatest driver ever!

NFL,  Get rid of all the pussed up NFL rules and go back to hitting somebody. Dump reply, I'm tired of waiting 5 minutes and watching the flow of the game ruined, not to mention not being able to celebrate a touchdown until after it's reviewed. I sure don't remember hating the NFL in the past.

Baseball,  put a damn salary cap in, break the effing union, add a floor cap so teams can't just pocket money, and get the balance back.

NBA,  No point listing, the NBA is unwatchable, there is no flow in the NBA with all the foul calls, and the fabricated stars they try to create.

NHL,  put it on a channel I can watch, lol

After having very carefully read all the posts above, my mind is in a dilemma!!!!  Just like all of you above differing, so also others who are not on the Q list would also tend to differ - after all OPINIONS DIFFER!!!!

I would suggest that open polls be taken through the net and/or newspapers on each sport that has a large following and then decisions taken.  This would and should make it a far better agreeable proposition that contradictions and expert opinions coming into play or misconceptions of being biased, etc. etc.

We all very well know that try as much as you may, you will never be able to satiate nor justify in this open minded world!!!

So, either leave it as it is (LEAVE WELL ALONE - saying) or keep on nagging tills the cows come home!!!! CHOICE IS OPEN as are your minds!!!!!!

Every games  is ruined of wasting the extra timing :( just too impossible for  errors and other team takes along to win as to cheat  for a error  that's what  I don' t like :(

i agree they should let the player in the NFL have their fun after scoring, it made the game more fun for the fans.  Waiting to see what new and crazy things that they were going to do.

This is just on the field game rules I am guessing.  Not how the league is run.

Baseball:  The rules of the game are fine.

Basketball:  This sport is 100% unwatchable in it's present form.  The game doesn't even become interesting until the final minute but then there are fouls fouls fouls and time outs galore.  So, instead of one 48 minute game, make it like vollyball.  A basketball game should be a best of 7 eight-minute games.  Now you have the potential of 4-7 exciting last second baskets.  And each team gets only 4 time outs.  Not per 8 minute game, but for the entire night.

The NFL:  This sport needs a complete overhaul.  Players should play offense and defense.  Like in traditional football, if a player leaves the game, he should not be allowed back in the game.  But unlike traditional football teams should make as many subs as their roster allows for.  Any player should be able to receive a pass.  Players should be allowed to make a forward pass from any point on the field.  Lose the two minute warning.  Fewer time outs.  Intentional grounding needs to be called when it is obvious to all the QB threw the ball away.  It is NEVER called!  A QB spiking the ball should be intentional grounding.

The NHL Point system:  I never had a problem with ties and really would like the shootout to go away.  But, if they feel they HAVE to have a shoot out, then the standings need to reflect what the teams did.  SO wins should not, I mean NOT be counted as a regulation win.  OT losses should go up as a loss.  So here is what you do.   Standings are W-SOW-SOL-L.  3 points for a win or OT win.  2 points for a SOW.  1 point for a SOL and none for a loss or OTL.
I would also like to see a larger European sized ice surface.  And strict penalties for any player who intentionally drops their gloves for the purpose of punching someone.  No other sport tolerates this.  The NHL is the joke of the sporting world for allowing it.

Rant over.

I                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      I  Think there are two to many rules in sports already with takes away a lot of the fun in the games today.  Lets just ride with what we have and call it a day.

I think they need to do away with the Taunting B/S call in the NFL, I seen a game a few weeks back and the guy just stood over him to say I sacked your A$$ turned and walked away then it was like a 15 yard penalty. And all these B/S fines for hard hits
we should just go back to flag Football like in grade schooland, Call it "THE POWDER PUFF NFL"

These guys know what they signed up for, A few more of these B/S rules and I will just give up Football all together

Sad But True
