If there was no "chase" how many times would "5 time" have been the champion?
If there was no "chase" how many times would "5 time" have been the champion? Photo

Okay, so I've not been on faniq as much as I would have liked recently, and as its the off season we need some kind of NASCAR argument. I was thinking to myself, how many would Jimmie have if the chase did not exist...would Jimmie even have any if the chase didn't come around with 10 to go every year?

As far as the numbers go, I'm not sure what to go for, but I honsetly believe if the chase didn't happen, Jimmie would up his game through the "regular" season. Whether he would still have 5 or not is debatable but I think his points after 26 races, and the number of points behind the leader would change significantly if he were just going for a 36 race marathon rather than a half marathon then a sprint. What do you all think? And if Jimmie hadn't got the 5, who would have/should have/could have? I know there's some strong feelings on the chase format out there so feel free to stretch your fingers, flex your wrists, and have a good moan (or celebration of Jimmie)...whatever works for you!

LOL...well now. The actual numbers would take math, which I suck at, but I did pull out some old newspapers clippings from when Jarrett was still driving. Going by numbers alone, no chase, Jimmie would have 1 maybe 2, He would have to rely on great racing every single week with little trouble. As for who would be, well let the debate start. Hamlin, Harvick, Kyle, those are my top 3 as far as the old format goes. Don't think I would relish Hamlin or Kyle as Champion, but the numbers are in their favor. Harvick? Heck Yeah!!! I'm a bit partial to him though. I'm sure I am missing some. Would really need to research to get definitive answers. Ok, came back with a little more info. The old points system was set up that the winner of the race got 175 points, and dropped by five points per place through fifth place, by four points per place from sixth to 10th, and by three points through the field. That is why the driver finishing 43rd, or last place, receives 34 points.  Siad I had more info not the answers...so with this, i will go and do some adding and subtracting, might have some answers tomorrow.....

I actually don't know how many, but I bet a bunch would have been Champions. I hate the take all points away but give ten to each past win. It kinda kills the consistency game a bit. You can finish last in 5 races, but win 2, and if you make the Chase, you are already ahead of some guys who were ahead of you before because even though they didn't win, they consistently finished in the top 5. It really irratates me because ol' JG is behind even thought until the Chase, he was first.

Apples and oranges...sorry, but I wasn't in the mood to play "shoulda, woulda, coulda..." .  Jimmie has five titles in a row(the record by two!) and should be celebrated as such.  Besides, the 2011 season starts in mid-February...only 9 weeks away!!  So I'll leave this to whoever wants to discuss it; it's a moot point to me.  Sorry, and GO JIMMIE!!  DRIVE FOR SIX!!

Interesting how the numbers add up differently, with no one really dominating.....they had to race hard every week in the old format, doesn't look like they do with the new one.

Jimmie still gets a couple of Championships, just doesn't dominate.

wow nice work Jen, really really interesting to look at...when you say six with Jimmie, do you mean that for 03 or 02 he would have won the series if there had been no chase? really though, great work, looking at that list I kind of wish the chase would go away I'd have loved to have seen Harvick and Edwards win the cup, and then Jimmie would still have 2 or 3 maybe. I just wonder whether he would race differently if there wasn't a chase...i know its a bit "apples and oranges" but I think its really pretty interesting to look at...and it gives my poor racing starved brain something to think about while I have no F1, motogp, NASCAR or Indycar

here's the previous years...and i am lazy, i merely asked bing and they gave me a list, all i had to do was read....it is interesting though.  The numbers to the right represent titles they would have under the old format.

Thanks to SIRIUS NASCAR Radio, I already knew that Jimmie wouldn't have as many Championships and that Jeff would be at 6, but the diversity of the "winners" under the old system almost creates an argument for the demise of the Chase.

I do know that I'm not a fan of the Chase, but neither am I a hater of the Chase.  I do know that I have said many many times that the bonus points for the win need to be awarded at the time of the win, not after the end of the "regular" season.  The "wild card" is supposed to ensure someone with as many wins as Kyle did in '09 and Jamie did in '10 will be in the Chase, but they must finish in the top 20 in points as well, so having five wins and 13 DNF's isn't going to cut it either.

I just wish NASCAR would quit creating/changing rules to try to get NEW fans and work on keeping the ones they have.
