if things dont go the phillies way this year (i.e. injuries, slumps, etc.), i could see the nationals pulling it off

Oakland seems to have really improved themselves over the winter, beefing up their pitching

You didn't list the Brewers. With the acquisions they picked up, they are vastly improved!

Baseball is not a game I follow closely because there are so many games, same as Basketball.  However, I do manage to watch the Final Four playoffs,  the World Series and etc.  I was estatic when the Diamondbacks won, when the A's won and the Texas Rangers.  I guess you could say I am an underdog rooter if the Mariners don't win.  I think this year will be a good year for the Mariners. So I am stuck on the Seattle teams and always hope they are in first place.

i didnt list the brewers because they would not be a surprise team in my book...they are a threat to win the central and a possible favorite

Really?  You think they are really a threat?  They were 14 games back last year and only added one pitcher.   It might be enough to de-throne last year's over-ahcieving Reds but is it enough to pass last years under achieving Cards?

I would call the Brewers a "dark horse" at best.

Dont forget they also added shaun marcum to there rotation...there rotation looks much better now with Grienke and Marcum added, which was there main issue last year..they obviously dont have a problem with offense...they have one of the best if not the best middle of the order lineup in the NL central also...although i think the cards got them slightly beat on that......to answer your question i do think they are a threat....because that same team that finished 14 games back competed for the nl central title the previous year and they added a cy young type pitcher to bolster there rotation..Grienke, Gallardo, Marcum...not a bad 1-2-3

Winning the NL West or even the AL Central makes all teams surprises.  Any team has a chance in at least those 2 divisions, and possibly the AL West as well.

Baltimore has made smart additions with Vlad, Derrek Lee, Duscherer, Hardy, and Reynolds. If everyone stayed healthy, they would compete, provided the Red Sox have some injuries.

And the Detroit Tigers aren't listed. I know they have been in first throughout the past seasons, only to blow it in the end, BUT, this year could be different. GO TIGERS!

How come the Cubs aren't listed?   Oh -- I see, you said surprise, not shock
