Song of the Day 4/11 (Edited 04/18/11 09:22PM by Jess)
Devo is an American band formed in 1973. The band had a #14 Billboard chart hit in 1980 with the single "Whip It”, and has maintained a cult following throughout its existence. Their style over time has shifted between punk, art rock, post-punk, and new wave. Their music and stage show mingle kitsch science fiction themes, deadpan surrealist humor, and mordantly satirical social commentary. Their often discordant pop songs feature unusual synthetic instrumentation and time signatures that have proven influential on subsequent popular music, particularly New Wave, industrial, and alternative rock artists. This song is "Whip It” by Devo (featured on the album “Freedom of Choice”)

Wasn't "Whip It" the first video MTV ever played?

Devo was one of thos ebands that tried to capitalize on  more bizarre....the flower pots hats the black clothes, the techno sound that was so popular in the 80s.....though their tune did become a one hit wonder and has been passed on through generations, thy were not a band i evver cared for.......wonder what the dudes ar eup to these days? fun stuff:)   check out the bertrand scott project!! there is some good  classic rok/blues sounds:)

These guys are one of my top 5 fave bands of all time. The whole idea for the band started out as a joke and accidentally became popular. They caught the attention of a few different artists, Including Iggy Pop (say what you want about him but, but he was an influential innovator of punk and even hard rock) . IMO they are a perfect example of the 80's- everything and everyone being totally unique, and not always in a good way. I dig the sh*t out of these guys, but I can understand how they aren't for everyone.

P.S. Redhead- the Double bonus song gives you an up to date idea on what these guys have been doing.

Devo-a band that truly DOES go from generation to generation...my son and his friends will BLAST Whip It...they're ok....AND, Mark Mothersbaugh, lead singer, composed music for many kids' shows, including the Rugrats, whick was a BIG hit in my house while the kids were growing up.

Speaking of bands that started out as a joke and became wildly popular (I may be wrong in this but I'm using a rumor I heard as segway)...a little bird tells me that someone else (one of my favorite bands) is coming out with a new one. I'll post the song I was quoting that incited the news from that little bird.

Im actually somewhat stunned at the number of Positive responses DEVO has received in this thread. That may partially explain why this country is in the mess it is today!

Nailbomb?  Haha. Well, that wouldn't have receieved a much better reveiw from moi'. Never been into Thrash....At All...In Any Way. The ONLY way Thrash is acceptable is if you unplug the singers mic and remove the clown from the stage.

This is what happens when I do not get request or suggestions. Got something you want me to give a shot, lemme know man and I'll do my best to post it. I try to put a little something for everyone here but being the poll creator, you know going into it you can't please everyone. I'll be sure to post some Celine Dion for you tomorrow!

Really Gary?  REALLY?

Listening to DEVO is the cause for this country's turmoil?  That's silly.
Everybody knows it's because of gangsta rap.

They are kinda funny and from time to time one of their songs pops out from my driving CDs of the 80s. Now that you mention they have created some songs for shows I remember the musical theme for Mojo Jojo, i think  is called "Go monkey go" they were still wearing those hats on the video.

LOL, I don't mind at all man. Loving it or b*tching about lets me know at least people are coming here and checking stuff out. I enjoy giving a hard time in return too.  So don't worry, I won't tell anyone you turn your stereo to 11 and listen to My Heart Will Go On while shaving your chest. Your secret is safe with me bro!

I LOVED that cartoon!  Yes, I know their music was used in many movies and tv shows, and they also wrote theme songs for a few different cartoons. You rock Violet!

I like their first few albums the most. I still like them, but, their early stuff is what I like. Mainly 1970s-early 80s.
I really like, "Freedom of Choice"  and I also like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQvEu6G-i_0

It took me about a couple months to like them. They do come off at first as, what I call, Heavy mental. Kind of like early XTC or even Talking Heads. Its not everybody's cup of tea. I like their music because they make their music with catchy tunes to go with the singing, if they didn't do that, I don't think I'd like them............. I guess my interpretation of catchy tunes.
