Put a cap on profits.  They're profiteering, and relying upon the lobbying funds they've paid to keep them from being limited in any real form from doing such.  During the congressional hearings--with regard to the question of their subsidies, they used all of the rhetorical scare tactics of any corporation; they stated they'd have to cut jobs, etc., if the money was taken from them--even though they have already posted yet another year of record profits.  The irony.....of the four years in the past decade in which they recorded record profits (three successive years in the mid-2000's), each of those years recorded reduced the number of workers in their employ.  It matters little until more people demand an end to PAC's, lobbyists, et.al., that give money to politicians in the form of "donations" (which are more akin, technically, to bribery that can be later twisted into extortion).  Until campaign finance reform removes exterior influences from the financial aspect of the election of politicians and make the monies they use an anonymous process, only those with money will have influence; and only those that universally control such will reap the benefits of such distribution beyond empty promises.

I think people are doing all they can about it.  They are having to do without other things to buy the gas they need to get to their jobs.  Sometimes i think we would all be better off if we just chucked the whole thing and went to the wilderness to live.

At $4 a gallon, I'll have to choose between gas and groceries soon. Gas will win.  *sigh*

depending on where you live a car may be necessary- not everyone is like NYC where can ublic transportation can get you anywhere and everywhere 24 hrs a day. One of the MAJOR perks I love about this city

What the Captain is really worried about, is his wife possibly figuring out that he has that long-distance relationship going on because he's draining the savings account to pay for the gas. That's why God gave you two thumbs, buddy...start hitch-hiking there

Don't know why everyone is crying about the price of gas..by Saturday at 6pm/ET we will all be recovering from a huge earthquake  that will leave us living like the wild west days, at least thats the latest prediction i heard.

Ah, well, living in Oklahoma I can see why you'd be worried about returning to the days of the 'wild west'.  If memory serves correctly, you have lands with subjugated peoples that are looking for payback.  Better get out that 6-shooter Tex....

The prices are based on speculation because of what's going on overseas (war, discord, etc.).  Although it's hard to believe that the oil companies are struggling with the cost per barrel of oil when they're raking in huge profits (I think the last I heard was Exxon-Mobil brought in $69 billion in profits during their first quarter alone).

Gas stations are allowed, legally, to change their prices daily ... however, it is NOT legal for them to change them more than once daily.

Very true indeed.  The thing I love best about the U.S. Constitution is Article 5.  The founder's knew, that despite the incredible knowledge of the individuals they assembled, that there would be a time for changes to be made according to the best interest of the American citizenry.  People are beginning to take interest as the circumstances of life have become more and more difficult for working families in general, and the realizations that are being gleaned from the modern evolution of this country will incite change.  Article 5 of the Constitution allows for amendments, and when society in general becomes further pressed with the hardships that we are beginning to experience as the result of greed, changes will be made, and not all the money in Bill Gates bank account will buy enough propaganda to prevent such a change.  So sure.....dissenters can remain apolitical and scoff at the general society, as general populations have historically displayed a very high degree of tolerance for economic hardship; however, once the levee breaks those that scoffed--well, I'll get a good laugh...  Just watch Wisconsin for a general example.
