RIP James Arness aka Matt Dillon

’Gunsmoke’ Actor James Arness Dies

RIP James Arness aka Matt Dillon Photo
Cowboys don't cry,
And heroes don't die.
And good always wins
Again and again.

And love is a sweet dream
That always comes true
Oh, if life were like the movies,
I'd never be blue.

I'm a huge fan of Gunsmoke, and am very sad about the passing of James Arness. Not because I thought they'd make another made for TV movie. No, it's sad because he was truly one of the nicest guys Hollywood has ever seen.

John Wayne was originally cast to play Matt Dillon, but he said he knew someone who'd be perfect for the part, and introduced them to James Arness. Wayne did a introduction for Arness at the beginning of the pilot episode. It's been rumored that they're going to make a Gunsmoke movie, and Johnny Depp would play the marshal.

RIP James Arness aka Matt Dillon Photo (Haven't heard anything lately on this.)

I bet you've never heard ole Marshall Dillon say
Miss Kitty have you ever thought of running away
Settling down would you marry me
If I ask you twice and beg you pretty please
She'd of said Yes in a New York minute
They never tied the knot
His heart wasn't in it
He just stole a kiss as he rode away
He never hung his hat up, at Kitty's place

James Arness was a mountain of a man. He was also good in the original "The Thing" movie, made in the 50s.

God Bless.

RIP James Arness.  My hubby loves all those old westerns.  Now I'll go out and buy him the DVD set so he can watch Gunsmoke interspersed with Bonanza....................

Sad to hear of James Arness' passing. Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Rawhide were always "must see TV" for me and my brother when we were growing up.

My Dad loved Gunsmoke, and please, tell me they will find someone better than Johnny Depp to play Marshall Dillon, like Harrison Ford, or Tommy Lee Jones...PLEASE!!!!

RIP James Arness!  A true American hero!  Was wounded at Anzio during WWII, and then was a bit player with another icon, John Wayne.  Marshal Dillion was an institution in my childhood as well.

He was Peter Graves brother.     We watched it too growing up, right after Wonderful World of Disney, and Wild Kingdom .

A Big loss in the actor world. One of my favorite western actors, TV Marshal, and Gunfighter. Great actor, and great show. The only other show that comes close IMO is Bonanza.

RIP James Arness

The 'Duke" was a great person - not to say he didn't have his faults , but who among us doesn't ( IMHO ) . And Mr. Arness was just as good in his own rite , it was amazing how they both shunned the lime-light , even Arness's brother was a fine actor also Peter Graves . Mimi you have a wonderful background , would love to sit and her you tell some of your stories .
