Oddfool's Mindtrap #77
What are MindTrap type questions you ask?

Ideally they're questions that cause you to think in an unconventional manner - outside the box if you will.

MindTrap questions usually involve a riddle, a mystery, or a play on words that will require some kind of lateral thinking on your part. The questions and mysteries are written in a way to try and trip you up. The fun thing about playing MindTrap is that they really show us how we think and arrive at conclusions.

"I have the only key to the room containing the jewelry of my late aunt, Maggy," stated Sid Shady.  Since her death a week ago, neither I nor anybody else has entered this room.  I was quite pleased to hear her will requested that all her jewelry was to be sold and the proceeds to go to charity," continued Shady.

Shadow removed a huge plant whose broad leaves were turned toward the wall, partially covering the safe.  While Shady was working the combination lock, Shadow crossed the room to sit on the ledge of the large bay window.

Shady opened the safe, and removed the bag of jewels.  "I'm sure these jewels will fetch a fortune for charity," said a smiling Sid Shady.

"I'll bet these jewels are either fake or there's a few missing," replied Shadow.

What aroused Shadow's suspicion?

Well...this is my first attempt...I would say the direction of the leaves on the plant...they should have been facing towards the bay window, NOT the wall...unless it was a plastic plant.....then my theory is shot to h3ll....

icfeet is right...the plant had been moved away from the sun so someone had indeed been in the room and moved the plant while they were banging someones wife

I am thinking that when Shadow sat on the window, and knowing that no one had been in there for a week, that the leaves on the safe had upset the dust that should have been on the safe. So therefore someone had to have been in there.

She was wearing some of it before she died and never had a chance to put it back in the safe. Yeah, you like that young fool, dont you!?

Though I appreciate the gesture, Rogs, there never was a statement claiming ALL Aunt Maggy's jewelery was in the safe.
Shadow is suspecting that someone stole some, if not all, of the jewelry (replacing them with fakes) from the safe and nowhere else.

I like icfeet's answer, makes sense someone forgot to place the plant back properly after opening the safe. I know some plants(maybe most?) reorient themselves toward the sun as needed to get the most sunlight they can, sunflowers are especially known for this, I think because they adjust most rapidly. If this is the case, the plants haven't had enough time to readjust after being turned towards the wall. Either Shady is smiling because he has the actual jewels or he is simply a caring and loving member of the community... right.

Ah well, I guess I must provide a unique answer for this one as well, otherwise I won't sleep well tonight.

Shadow is the one who removed the plant (let us just assume the plant is fake so the orientation of it only mattered because it concealed the safe), because he knew where the safe was. This may also convey the idea that Shadow knew how the plant was supposed to be oriented originally, and found it facing an odd direction this time. OR because the plant only covered the safe partially, unlike its original placement which covered the entire safe. Someone moved the plant.

That doesn't seem original enough for me... It still results in the plant being moved.

How about as Shadow sat by the window, he still held the plant, and within its vase, he spotted a jewel semi covered with dirt. Someone had tried to hide the jewels in the plant's vase, and Shadow had a good look at the plant while Shady worked the combination. I shall rest easy now.

the answer will be the leaves pointed away from the window, because leaves will go towards sunlight.

however, other than it is a big bay window, it never says that the plant is in the sunlight, so it could be plastic, and well shadow and shady have been playing this blame game for 77 polls now, so who really knows what is going on.

other than Shadow was banging Aunt Maggie (isn't that always the case from what i read?)

What town does Shady live in? Their legal system is sh*tty or fantastic. If I'm going to start a life of crime, that is where I need to be.

The Butler did it.

Official Answer is... Shady, who had the only key, said that neither he nor any one else had been in the room for the past week.  If this was true, the leaves of the plant would have been leaning toward the window instead of the wall.

(Excellent alternative answers, one and all.)
