Troy Davis
Troy Davis is scheduled to be injected with lethal chemicals at 7PM ET tonight in Georgia.  Davis is convicted of murdering a police officer.  However, there is no physical evidence linking him to the murder.  Instead he was convicted due to 9 eye witnesses, 7 of whom afterwards recanted their testimony and many claimed they were coerced  into their testimony.  To be quite frank, you can't even uphold Davis's conviction let alone execution if you truly believe in a fair justice system.  Internationally this is playing horribly as London's The Independent is asking if this is the worst miscarriage of American justice ever, and Amnesty International as well as the European Union have gone on the record with their disapproval of this scheduled execution.  As a country (or if you live in Georgia, as a state) is this the message we want to send to the world - that we can and will execute innocent people?

They were coerced into testifying he was at the scene and shot the gun.  After the trial, they stated they had been coerced into saying those things and took back their testimony.

I'm sure there have been other innocent people executed, but that doesn't make it right. There should be someone looking into these things. Follow up a little bit on a death conviction. We cannot just execute people who don't deserve to die.

If there is doubt about his guilt they should hold off on the death and someone should look into it.

As I said last night in Norse's thread, this is a disgrace. Regardless of whether you support the death penalty, the #1 thing one must be 100% sure of is that the accused definitely committed the crime. That's clearly not the case, and the state of Georgia just doesn't seem to care. Georgia Supreme Court denied a stay about a half hour ago. The US Supreme Court is his last hope.

Circumstantial evidence and even the presence of a few witnesses should never lead to an execution. There should be clean, clear cut evidence of guilt before someone receives the death penalty. DNA, video depicting the act, something. This is completely asinine that it's being allowed.

Unlike the streets the Justice system should have to find "Beyond the shadow of a doubt" that someone is guilty before being allowed to order an execution , if there is in any way shape or form the slightest chance of innocence then it should be on hold until there can be a further reaching investigation.  Just because the Jury system is in place doesn't make it flawless , it so often leads to the wrong conclusion for many reasons, people are people even as a small group mistakes are made.

If your going to execute people even if there is a chance they may be innocent , then you can do away with the arrest of organizations who handle things the same way in their own ranks, because it makes the judicial system no better or more lawful then their street ranking one.

Inexcusible. I was watching the news about this over the past week. The board that decided he's still being put to death should have to explain why. I don't understand how the family of the deceased officer can honestly say they're sure it was him. The wrong person being executed is not closure it's just as much if not more of an injustice.

Feds can't get involved because it's a state issue is what I heard.

Hopefully lack of news at this point means the Supreme Court is getting involved.

The state has issued a temporary reprieve in order to wait for the Supreme Court to rule.

When in doubt do with out KILLING. If Georgia Supreme Court Sees any doubt at all and they let a person be killed by their finial say, then God help us all, that's as low as you can go.

The Supreme Court just denied a stay. Troy Davis will be executed a few minutes after 11:00 pm eastern time, according to news reports. There are no words.

If you we're truly innocent, rest in peace.
#19 | 1130 days ago

Time of death: 11:08 pm.

We can only hope that justice was done, as unlikely as it seems at this moment.

If there's one thing Troy Davis' execution demonstrates, it's that law has become a process; a procedure; and a political consideration--not the pursuit of justice.  What a sad evolution for a country founded upon virtues and principle.

I believe with more than a shadow of a doubt, that they executed an innocent man. I do not know a lot about the law but I do know this, our justice system is setup that 50 guilty men walk free BEFORE you imprison or execute one innocent man.  I am glad that his cruel and unusual punishment (after 4 stays and living through that hell time after time) is over for him. I hope to God that for the truly guilty in this crime, be it the police and the prosecutors, to the lying witnesses, theirs is not.
