As much as I hate to say it, my favorite football program is doing that and it's the Michigan Wolverines. The other one right off the top of my head is Notre Dame football.

 The Cubs (seriously)
Notre Dame/Michigan/Penn State/UCLA/ football
The Knicks

No NFL teams really fit.  Prestige in the NFL is so short lived.  Nobody respects the Bills even though in the early 90's they were awesome.  Doesn't work the same way as it does in other sports.  I guess maybe the 49ers, Cowboys, and Raiders, but they also seem to be 3 of the most mocked teams in the NFL.

Maybe the Cowboys.

The Cubs are still selling out after that big world series win in 1908.

I'll admit my Irish have been living off the strength of their name.  We've been down, no doubt, but it's not nearly as bad as some would like to think. It's perceived that was because of the ridiculous expectations every year.  The landscape of college football has changed a lot and no team will ever dominate like the teams of old(ND, Bama, FSU, Miami, etc).   We've had some very good seasons(double digit wins) to go along with the bad.  Not only that, every "blueblood" has gone through a similar lull.

I wouldn't say Michigan is there just yet.  They've had a down few years, but they are only a few years removed from nearly playing for all the marbles.

Other teams living off their name include the Cowboys, Florida State, and UCLA(both football and bball).

Not sure how the Cubs are living off their name.  Yeah, they drew over 3 million again this year, but it's not like we didn't know they'd suck.  It's the Cubs - they suck damn near every year.  We as fans just love to party watch our nation's pastime.

As for the 49ers, when you rule a league consistently for 20 years like the Yankees did in baseball of course fans will love the doiwnside- Joe Montana/Steve Young where are you?

Maybe I'm just blind, but I don't see a whole lot of 49ers bashing.  Maybe it's because they're on the West Coast, but they don't seem to receive nearly as much criticism as the Cowboys or Redskins have recently.

I agree with Dallas and UCLA, but if not for their name would the Miami Hurricanes still have a football program?
