As sports fanatics, we've all endured the agony of defeat(unless you're a bandwagon jumper). I'm a firm believer that experiencing the bad with the good is what makes sports great. Sure, it would be nice to win titles every year, but can you truly appreciate your squad if you've never dealt with the bad times?
I'm a huge Cubs fan. Been going to Wrigley since I can remember(25+ years). As a Cubs fan, I've always hoped for the best, but expected the worse. It's a disease I tell ya! Against my better judgement, I watched "Catching Hell" last night. The entire Bartman ordeal conjures up wicked bad memories. I recall partying on Waveland Ave during Game 6 and just knowing it was FINALLY our year. No way we could blow that game - not even the Cubs. Then the "foul ball" happened. I won't go into detail as to what transpired afterwards, but I've never experienced something so bizarre is my life. The air got sucked out of the Northside that night faster than Usain Bolt running a 40 yard dash. It's was completely and utterly crazy. Without a doubt, that is my most painful sports memory.
I'll end by admitting I initially blamed Bartman. It was hard not to and unless you were there, I don't think you can fully understand. Looking back, I'm not proud of it. It was immature and the easy way out. As Cubs fans we always look to place blame somewhere. Bartman did what any other fan would of done and his life was ruined because of it. Meanwhile, Moises "Piss Hands" Alou, Mark Prior, and Alex Gonzalez don't get any of the blame. They should have because....well nevermind. I'm getting heated just thinking about it and it's too early for that.
So what is your most painful sports memory?
