The Lakers, Jazz, Grizzlies... re-location should have included re-naming as well.

it would make more since if the Lakers played in Salt Lake City, and the Jazz were fitted into the jazzy upbeat streets of LA, but by team name only. State of Utah doesn't deserve to win any championships.

Other than Memphis which was an expansion team - The Lakesrs originated in Minneaopolis,  the Jazz originated in New Orleans which both nicknames suit their region. You got some team their names suit them quite well,, Cowboys ( Dallas), Dodgers ( moved from Brooklyn to avoid keep gewtting waxed bt the Yankees, etc etc - - go raiders

The Grizzlies started out in Vancouver, which also made sense at the time. That is considered the biggest failed city choice for an expansion team in any sport.

Dodgers Would Have Made Perfect Sense In Frisco As Well as Brooklyn.

I'm a full supporter of the City owns the Team Name.  Then we wouldn't have the Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, Indy Colts, . . . .Cleveland did it right.   Can't wait till we get the L.A. Vikings!!!

Great poll!! NBA Utah Jazz,Charlotte Bobcats,Oklahoma Thunder.
NHL  Columbus Blue Jackets,Nashville Predators and I hate the name Anaheim (Mighty Ducks?) and Pheonix Coyotes.
Carolina Hurricanes I can live with.

Blue Jackets is a reference to the Union Army of the Civil War.  So the nickname would pretty much work in any Union State I should think.

Predators is pretty generic but there have been sabre tooth tiger fossils found in central Tennesse I'm told.  Hence the extinct animal's skull used as part of the logo.

But what gets me more than inappropriate nicknames are teams who don't play in the city or State for which they are named... To me it just promotes geographic illiteracy.

I'm sure the NHL would disagree.

Edmonton Eskimos...don't fit or inappropriate? what's the topic again? Redskins! Everyone in Washington is red skinned? Calgary Flames (Atlanta hangover) - unless you need flames to keep warm in Canada

Flames is a good call...  Works much better for Atlanta than for Calgary that's fer dang sure.

There weren't when they arrived but there has been the modern equivalent of the trolley (light rail) for a couple of decades now.

Silly me, I thought the Dodgers were named after all the draft dodging that was going on in NYC during the war

I'm gonna have go with the Chicago Bears, though I love this team:

For the "region" they probably ought to have been named the 'Beavers'  (metaphorically of course ... not the animal).

I used to go through this little town in South Texas...Falls City.  Their mascot was the Beaver.  The sign at the edge of town says:

"Welcome to Falls City.  Home of the Battling Beavers"

I considered relocating.
