Go Alone or Don't Go?
So, here's the deal. It's the time of year for me to purchase my Indianapolis 500 tickets for next year. As previously indicated though, the friend I went to the race with every year died in July. Former Q'er Jon went with me this year (it was to be all three of us, but my friend was in the hospital), but his job makes it difficult for him to attend that weekend, and he understandably has let me know he probably can't make it. I really don't know anyone that can go, so I obviously have a decision to make. For me, it's the Indy 500, but for this question imagine you're in this situation with your favorite yearly event. Would you rather go to said event alone, or not go at all?

As much interest and compassion you have for Indy Car, I'm sure you already know the answer. So order the ticket already.

What he said. Go, enjoy it, take pictures, and drink milk (that's what they do there, right?).
#3 | 1001 days ago

Hell I've never been an Indy Car fan and even I have the Indy 500 on my bucket list.  I'd go regardless if anyone wants to join me or not.

You already know my answer to this. Go...

If you can afford to buy two tickets, do that - you might find/meet someone or something might come up to where someone you already know ends up being able to go. If not, get one ticket and go anyway.

GO!!!!! You know Jack would want you to.  You know you really want to.  You know you will have a great time, regardless of being there alone! I like Jess' idea tho, and think you should get a second ticket, cuz you just never know.............

If its something that you enjoy then why let anyone else dictate whether u go or not.  Put the order in and sort the rest out later , solo ain't always a bad ride , esp in a spot like that.

Go and have a good time, Your friend would probably want you to go anyway....If there are any acquaintances you've made in previous trips to Indy it won't be like your there alone, I've been to games and movies alone when i was single, there is no need to miss something you  like just because you don't have someone to go with. You never know what kind of new friendships you may start up while your there.
#14 | 1000 days ago

You should go. I wouldn't go because I don't go places alone.
#15 | 1000 days ago

If its your passion you will have as much fun alone as with company- Myself I get into way more trouble alone than with company so go dude!!! If you dont your conscience wont let you forget it

Looks like the overwhelming majority opinion is for you to go alone.  Sounds like something you truly love and would seem to be a shame to end the tradition.

I used to travel for work a lot and have gone to many sporting events alone.  It can be a good thing.

I know it won't be the same w/o your friend (RIP), but you're obviously very passionate about Indy car racing.  Therefore, I say go and make some new friends/memories.

One of the funnest times I've ever had at a sporting event was attending a Hawks game in Nashville.  My buddy was playing for the Preds at the time and got me two free tickets.  I was there for work and a co-worker who was supposed to go ended up being transferred.  So I went alone, met some Hawks fans, and had  a grand ole time...sans the Hawks losing.  Still talk to the couple I kicked it with, too.

IM GOING ALONE.........paid for it so might as well enjoy...........would take the ticket and maybe get someone to buy it.......and than.........you ARE NOT ALONE..........
#19 | 1000 days ago

Go because if you don't, you'll regret it later.

I personally would not go alone, i need somebody with me to be able to enjoy it.  I guess it might be different for a man.

book your flight and your room and order the ticket.  clearly someone in your seating area will fit the bill as a  "race buddy"

Well, thanks everybody for the input. I was intending for this poll to be a thought experiment if you all were in a similar situation. My fault for not making that clear.

 Well then...
I've gone to movies alone, I've traveled alone...I might not go to an IndyCar race alone because that's not really my deal, but I'd go to a hockey game, football game, baseball game, or the fights alone. So, I'd DEFINITELY go to the mother of all of any of those sports alone if I was put into that situation.

I've gone to Canadian NASCAR races alone.  I've gone to hockey and football games alone.  I've gone to the movies alone.  I eat lunch alone 4 out of 5 days at work - I'd definitely go alone and hope to make some new friends

Go, and enjoy. It might not be the same, but it will still be good. I'm sure your friend will be with you in spirit, and it would honor him.

Yes, for years and I've been involved in one way or another since I was a teenager.  Now it is called the "Canadian Tire NASCAR Series" but it used to be called CASCAR.   My cousin used to race a car in the series back when I was a teenager and I was a member of his pit crew.  I drove the car when I was 17 in the "Powder Puff" series.  It was the number 17 "Dill Pickle", painted green.  We painted bandaids over the crunched metal when he got his cuz we couldnt' afford body parts.

I contend that a Q convention at the 500 would be a blast, especially if we rented an RV and camped outside the Speedway for the weekend. It's one giant party out there, and those that didn't care about the race can get in the infield (and just drink and party more) for $30.
