What's with all the facial hair?
You might be noticing - not only on this site, but other social networking mediums - that everybody, including women, is sporting a mustache in their avatar. Why, you ask? Well...it's the same idea as wearing pink through the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Movember is a relatively recent cause, one in which men and women alike can ignore their razors for the entire month of November to raise awareness for diseases that affect men, such as prostate cancer.

Rather than ignoring my razor (I'm part Italian...this is not an option - people will think Sasquatch made its way to Key West. Not only that, but if I don't shave my legs before all football and hockey games I guarantee my teams losses), I decided to put a mustache on my avatar everywhere I frequent, such as here, facebook, and twitter. And, judging by the looks of avatars around the site, it appears as if a lot of other women are doing the same thing. Men have the freedom of actually growing their own!

How will you honor Movember?

Jess, thanks for the option, it was real cool.

Cancer blows.

I'm a girl and will have a fake mustache on my avatar.  And I'll deal with my manfriend growing out  some strange strongman-esque 'stache for the month.  Taking one for the team.

For the last few years, the beard I grow for halloween comes off Nov. 1 leaving a mustache for Movember.. This year's specimen, I must say, is quite a treat that brings joy to all who encounter it.. Yes, it is real, and you're right it's quite spectacular

I've had a Van Dyke for years. I started working as a beer hawker at Busch II when I was 23 and whenever I would ID people with my babyface, the people would laugh at me and ask ME for MY ID! I've had the mustache & beard ever since. I used to grow a full beard after the baseball season and then try to dye it as close to white as I could for Christmas, but never could get it to work out - many times with disastrous results. Now that I don't have a reason to go Santa, the only beards are from shear laziness.

As for my ex, she could grow leg & armpit hair thicker than me - talk about scary!

Its good to see the men getting some recognition for Prostate Cancer awareness. 32,000 men died of Prostate Cancer last year in the United States alone...

I didn't wear pink in October and I am not going to shave for Movember. Congrats to all that are wearing real/fake mustaches for a good cause. But to parapharse Chris Rock. they ain't trying to cure s**t, Doctors, drug companies aren't anything but legal drug dealers. Drug Dealers don't make money if you don't need drugs. If you don't have a disease, you don't need drugs. They aren't trying to cure s**t, they are simply trying to find a way to keep you alive with the use of drugs. How much money do you think they lost out on when they cured Polio? They are still kicking themselves on all the money lost, if only they had found a way to keep you alive with Polio, rather than curing it.

My boyfriend has prostrate cancer, he has one more treatment in Jan.  They are hoping that will take care of it.  It's good to see so many of you caring.  Cancer seems to touch all of us at one time or the other.

I don't see your point. To me, especially this month, it's more about awareness and encouraging people to get checked. I feel the same way as you about cancer never being "cured", I mentioned this a week or two ago, but that doesn't mean every person with cancer has to die from it. The earlier it's detected, the better. My mom was diagnosed with leukemia when I was 13 and again when I was 16. She underwent treatment, she's still alive, had 3 more kids, and is "cancer free". Early detection makes a difference regardless of how much money docs, insurance companies, blah blah blah are going to make off of your illness.

(And as usual, and yes I know you won't do it, I encourage you to get a check up some time in the next couple of years)

I heard that they are going to decide to cure AIDS in 2017, and Cancer in 2021. So, there goes that theory.

Our best defense against cancer is early detection. They may not be able to (or want to, according to mister negative up there) cure it just yet but people who find it early have a better chance of survival....which is why I think raising awareness in October and November is an awesome thing...if it gets more people in there getting checked out, then it's working.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad.  I lost mine to cancer too...his had started in the liver and spread to various places before he was diagnosed. They figure he had it for several years too.

For me it's the difference between my dad (survived and is 71) and my grandfather who ignored it and passed away at 57.

I might just SHAVE mine.....I did in November '04 because my kids had never seen me sans stache, and kept it off for a year, until Movember of '05.  Niece got married in Disney on November 3 '05, and that was the last time I completely shaved my upper lip.

When the research finds and detects the genes that carry the disease then a cure is possible.  I believe cures for many disease can and will be found in stem cell research.

I dont want to sound morbidbut I'm kool with my dad- in his waning years when I asked when did this come about- he refreshed my memory that he had his sickness  since I was damn near 8-9 yrs old when I was a kid- I am considered what they used to refer to back in the 60's as a " oops kid". I remember my mother complaining ' That goddamn Geritol- look what that **** did, I done went and got pregnant again" . My parents had me at late stages in their life. Back then having children in your 40's was totally unheard of
