Book Club: February (Edited 03/02/12 10:25PM by sports_schmorts)
This month's choices are brought to you courtesy of me. i put two choices by christopher moore cause the dude is an ace at writing comedic dialogue.

lamb by christopher moore-  The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiahs best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work "reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams" (Philadelphia Inquirer).

lust lizard of melancholy cove by christopher moore- The town psychiatrist has decided to switch everybody in Pine Cove, California, from their normal antidepressants to placebos, so naturally—well, to be accurate, artificially—business is booming at the local blues bar. Trouble is, those lonely slide-guitar notes have also attracted a colossal sea beast named Steve with, shall we say, a thing for explosive oil tanker trucks. Suddenly, morose Pine Cove turns libidinous and is hit by a mysterious crime wave, and a beleaguered constable has to fight off his own gonzo appetites to find out what's wrong and what, if anything, to do about it.

If there's a funnier writer out there, step forward."
   — Playboy

this book will save your life by a.m. homes- Richard Novak is a modern-day Everyman, a middle-aged divorcé trading stocks out of his home. He has done such a good job getting his life under control that he needs no one- except his trainer, nutritionist, and housekeeper. He is functionally dead and doesn't even notice until two incidents-an attack of intense pain that lands him in the emergency room, and the discovery of an expanding sinkhole outside his house-conspire to hurl him back into the world. On his way home from the hospital, Richard forms the first of many new relationships: He meets Anhil, the doughnut shop owner, an immigrant who dreams big. He finds a weeping housewife in the produce section of the supermarket, helps save a horse that has fallen into the sinkhole, daringly rescues a woman from the trunk of her kidnapper's car, and, after the sinkhole claims his house and he has to relocate to a Malibu rental, he befriends a reluctant counterculture icon. In the end, Richard is also brought back in closer touch with his family-his aging parents, his brilliant brother, the beloved ex-wife whom he still desires, and finally, before the story's breathtaking finale, with his estranged son Ben.

heh heh...my poll closes on february 30th. suck it, fanick.

I've had a few Christopher Moore books on my wish list for awhile now, this one being one of them.  I'm halfway through "I Am Legend", and it's a short book, so I should be able to keep up (as long as our book this month isn't 80000 pages).

if it ends up being one of the christopher moores, you'll be done with it way faster than you want to. i've already read lust lizard and put it on there cause it's so amazing, if i ever had kids, i'd read it to them every night.

Whew, ok.  I was reading the second one during December and January, so I kinda stayed on topic.
So I'm ahead of the game?  Um.  WTF is wrong with you people?  I'm always about 3 books behind.

You just talked about the hotness of a video game chick.  That's beyond nerdy.  Like, even I'D make fun of you for being nerdy kinda nerdy.

PS - the reviews I saw were great, and it's local multi-player (which I appreciate), and it looks scary as s**t.

If it's a one-vote tiebreaker situation, I voted for "Lizard".

I just finished "Under the Dome" by Stephen King.  I aint much of a King fan, but it was a good book.  The only thing I can say about it is that Stevie boy could use Cactus Jack's help in coming up with better ways for the bad guys to get croaked off.  I never woulda let them b*st*rds take the easy way out like he did, no sirree Bob.

I started reading Lamb last night...thoroughly enjoying it. This entire exchange made me laugh out loud:

"It's sarcasm, Josh."
"Sarcasm?"
"It's from the Greek, sarkasmos, To bite the lips. It means that you aren't really saying what you mean, but people will get your point. I invented it, Bartholomew named it."
"Well, if the village idiot named it, I'm sure it's a good thing."
"There you go, you got it."
"Got what?"
"Sarcasm."
"No, I meant it."
"Sure you did."
"Is that sarcasm?"
"Irony, I think."
"What's the difference?"
"I haven't the slightest idea."
"So you're being ironic now, right?"
"No, I really don't know."
"Maybe you should ask the idiot."
"Now you've got it."
"Sarcasm."
"Biff, are you sure you weren't sent here by the Devil to vex me?"
"Could be. How am I doing so far? You feel vexed?"
"Yep..."

This is the Jesus I'm going to have in my mind from now on. I'm so happy.

PS - I don't know what I voted for at this point.  It seems to say Lamb, but then underneath, it appears I agreed with, well, EVERYONE who took the poll.  *janet face emoticon*  (Including one from each answer choice ... you, Kevin, and Sid got cut off on the right, but he's there "agreeing" with me, too). This is one of those weird, zen master, agreeing with everyone and no one all at once things.

PPS - I completely forgot about this month, so I'm already about 3 weeks behind.  I'm also behind on my work bookclub book (19% through it and it's the 22nd).  I'm gonna make this my pick for next month at work so I can maybe finally catch the hell up.  Why do I do this to myself?

That is funny, cause I barely voted an hour ago(to make this f**king poll go away). I figured that since a winner had been declared, I wouldn't effect the outcome. I voted for option 3(this book will save your life). It shows that you, woody, and I are the only ones that voted for that book.

No, I hate it like that, actually.  But I still do it.  I need a psychiatrist.  Or I need to tell Stoney to be all 1950s husband-like and not allow me to take on all this crap at once.

Just finished this...LOVED it! What a great story.

another favorite excerpt (I know, it's probably blasphemous, but whatever). This is Josh (Jesus), and Biff when they're writing the Beatitudes:

"Okay. Earth to the meek. Here we go. Blessed are the peacemakers, the mourners, and that's it."
  "How many is that?"
  "Seven."
"Not enough. We need one more. How about the dumbf**ks?"
"No, Josh, not the dumbf**ks. You've done enough for the dumbf**ks. Nathaniel, Thomas--"
"Blessed are the dumbf**ks for they, uh - I don't know - they shall never be disappointed."
"No, I'm drawing the line at dumbf**ks. Come on, Josh, why can't we have any powerful guys on our team? Why do we have to have the meek, and the poor, the oppressed, and the pi**ed on? Why can't we, for once, have blessed are the big powerful rich guys with swords?"
  "Because they don't need us."
"Okay, but no 'Blessed are the dumbf**ks."
  "Who then?"
  "Sluts?"
  "No."
"How about the wankers? I can think of five or six disciples that would be really blessed."
"No wankers. I've got it: Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake."
"Okay, better. What are you going to give them?"
  " A fruit basket."
"You can't give the meek a whole earth and these guys a fruit basket."
"Give them the kingdom of heaven."
"The poor in spirit got that."
  "Everybody gets some."
"Okay then, 'share the Kingdom of Heaven.'" I wrote it down.
"We could give the fruit basket to the dumbf**ks."
  "NO DUMBF**KS!"
"Sorry, I just feel for them."
"You feel for everyone, Josh. It's your job."
  "Oh yea. I forgot."

Laugh out loud, shoot my drink out my nose, hilarious.
(PS. I don't know if wanker is a bad word here or not, but I'm pretty sure I've heard it on TV so I think it's ok. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.)

I don't even know who you are on WWF, and it's actually making me mad now.  Granted, I have 20 games going at any given time, so I forget who I'm playing for even those whose names I DO know.

PS - Half the lame ass words I put and get away with are just words that were played against me, and I probably flipped the hell out over them, too.  lol  (Like Stoney can play "s**t", but "f*g" isn't ok?  And it let's me play c**t?  wtf?)

Then I thought, "well, he's old, and they aren't so good with the insults"... I mean I'm sure the old faithful one popped into his mind, but he didn't say it. That would've been great though.)
I was seriously THIS close to trying to make "Thunderc**t" my WWF name.  lol  I didn't know if they'd censor it ... or worse, ban me before I even got to start.

PS - I'm pretty sure I know what game it is now.  "Lounger" actually sticks out in my mind a little.  Are you winning?  I don't remember that much.

PPS - Message me on here then, my WWF messages don't work any more, apparently.  (Anyone else having this issue?  It's on my Fire ... my friends who use their iPhone/iPad/iPod don't have this problem.  Ugh.)

Pretty sure House has said it.

(I didn't read the excerpt cause I wanna be surprised, I so lied when I said I'm about to read more last night, btw. I have to focus really hard on wwf against odd and stupid janet with her made up words... I keep saying, "so jif is not a word but she can put this sh** on the board"...lol, though that hasn't happened this game...yet)
I think that's where I remember hearing it, now that you say that.

No, I'm not winning. I keep getting 6 and 7 letter words with no place to put them. Very upsetting. OH, the last one I played was zyme, I think.
