Best and Worst Baseball Attractions (Edited 02/06/12 05:44PM by Nick__)
I was reading an article about the MIAMI MARLINS new ball park and they showed this HIDEOUS picture of their HOME RUN structure and what it will do when the MARLINS player hits a HOME RUN!

Between OZZIE & ZAMBRANO, this THING will be torn to pieces before the ALL-STAR game (hahaha)!!

If you click on this link, you will see on YOUTUBE exactly what it does.......trust me, you don't want to miss this!!

Am I the only one that believes the fun is sucked out of any thread that ML31 comments in? It may just be my opinion but every thread ends the same, him arguing endlessly with someone about how he isn't the one that argues endlessly, let alone arrogantly. Please prove me right by responding!

DISLIKES:
Being a CUBS fan, I don't like that there isn't an electronic scoreboard that could show replays!

I also don't like that MILLER LITE is not served inside the park.

No seats in the bleacher section, only benches!  We all need some back support.....hunching over for 5 hours sucks!

The iron pillars that hold up the upper deck, which could be an obstructed view of the playing field if you are sitting in Terrace Reserve or the UPPER deck Reserve area.

LIKES:
Location of the park with tons of bars for before and after the game.

The atmosphere of the park

The IVY on the outfield walls!

The sweet EYE CANDY that attend the games

I've been attending CUB games for 37 years, this year and finally have season tickets too, but, there are still some upgrades that could be done.....just subtle ones!

Any place that sets of fire works for mere home runs.  Massive overkill.  If the team feels compelled to have them fire them off if the home team wins.   Sheesh...

Cincinnati is home of Tall Stacks - a festival of old-time river boats of the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers on the landing outside Great American Small Park. When the Reds hit a homerun, or win (also during the "rockets red glare" portion of the National Anthem), they set off flares in each smokestack. They also have the bombs & fireworks outside the park for HRs, wins & fireworks nights. One of the country's largest fireworks manufacturers is based here, so they are a major sponsor - go figure! LOL

I noticed they fired them off in Cincy when I was at a game there a couple of years ago.  They also do a Dinsey-esque display in Anaheim after every home run and, at least for the game I attended, when the Angels took the field.  It was a day game too...   Southern Cal people....   (he says shaking his head)

Swimming pool at B.O.B., or whatever it is called now? The only good part was early on Hooters would rent it once a month. It used to be a "good view" if you were in the RF side of the stadium. Since then it has been pretty much a waste of time.

What in the Hell were they thinking of??  I mean really that belongs in a water park at Wisconsin Dells!  Like someone on you tube said "someone or a group had to actually approve this" unreal

I haven't traveled to that many stadiums, but new Busch is nice, Atlanta is nice and you can tailgate there, Cell has good beer choices and the worst place was the Marlins old stadium!  But for me the place will always be Wrigley.....I know the amenities leave lots to be desired, but still my favorite place to take in a game toss back a few put my sunglasses on and enjoy the many "views".

The only ones i have been to are gone now, Riverfront and Arlington Stadium. We have a minor league team here and there really insn't a bad seat in the park.

Marlins need to scrap that thing and try again.

One day I'd like to go see a game at Wrigley, and Fenway even though I hate the Red Sox.

I thought only dolphins did tricks like that! But the name Miami Dolphins was taken already. Instead they should have a fishing boat out there with a fisherman reeling in a marlin when they hit a home run!

I'm not asking to tear down the OLD scoreboard.

I'm asking to install an additional, LED one to show replays.  Hell, they are talking about installing a 75 foot wide one in right field right now. Unfortunately, it would be for advertising only

They did something similar in Fenway, if I'm not mistaken???  Time to get with the times!

Whats wrong with a little past. Baseball and Wrigley are synonamous. Changing the scoreboard in any way begins changing the park from what it is and was.  They have updated Wrigley from what I understand.

I know you and I agree to disagree on this. But Nick not the scoreboard. And as far as replays, watch them on e.s.p.n..

Apparently MLB has a huge problem with a little past...  The owners have showed they have no interest in it.  (expanded playoffs, IL play, etc...)  To this day I think the only reason the Cubs still have their manual scoreboard is because it would hit them in the pocketbook if they replaced it.  At least short term it would...  And we all know MLB owners don't think about the long term effects of what they do.

Hellooooooo?!?!?  Woman, you been drinkin???   (haha)

I never said to change the scoreboard.  Not in my first post or in my reply to your post.

I'm stating adding an LED replay scoreboard somewhere, in addition to the historic one that's already there.

I was there 2 weeks ago to pick out my season ticket seats.  Nothing new has been done yet.  They are talking about adding a Patio section in right field with that 75 foot long LED advertising board, but I haven't heard if it's been approved yet?

BTW - Here are my season ticket seats (pay no attention to the scaffolding in the picture as they were working on the upper deck roof)

I've only been to a couple of parks, and I can't comment on the beer either way (what it costs, the brands, etc.) because I don't drink it.

I don't like that they don't sell Frito-Lay Brand (that's important) sunflower seeds at any of the parks/stadiums I've been.

AT&T Park - I loved the atmosphere, the big giant Coke bottle and mitt, the lower back wall that goes out to the bay (it's a beautiful park), they had great other alcohol (wines etc.) that actually wasn't all that expensive, relatively speaking. And the garlic fries were fantastic.

Safeco - LOVE the retractable roof, the fact that Qwest Centurylink is RIGHT there,
the hanging bat chandelier in the entrance,

the Mariner's logo with a great quote on the floor near the entrance, (I can't remember or find the quote right now but I remember loving it)

Other various cool art around the park, the fact that Safeco serves Pepsi, you butter your own delicious hot popcorn, the fresh roasted peanuts (OMG).

And the garlic fries are fantastic.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards

Good: Perfect mix of modern and retro
No bad sightlines
Boog's BBQ
The Warehouse

Bad: The Orioles play there

I actually have more experience at Nationals Park lately, but honestly, everything about it screams average.

I guess maybe I was offended by your condescending attitude toward people that live in So Cal. You probably shouldn't lump everyone in the same category. I don't even go to baseball games often, since I am not a huge baseball fan, but if I did go it might be nice to see fireworks, I don't care if it's before, during and after. Fireworks are fun!

disclaimer* This is my opinion and I realize that it may disagree with yours, but I'm not an argumentative person so I am happy to just let this end here!
#29 | 106 days ago

For those of you who never got to go to old Tiger Stadium in Detroit, it was simply the greatest old ball park in baseball.

The field was beautiful, the huge scoreboard in the center field bleachers was fantastic, every batter's average, out of town scores...all by hand.

The overhang in right field caused quite a few fly balls to become home runs.

It was a magic place to go as a young baseball fan, to see your heroes play in person, and not on TV or by listening on the radio.

I love Comerica Park, the Tigers home since 2000. It's beautiful, but it will never replace the Majesty and Grace of Tiger Stadium.

Nice that you met her.  I haven't.  All I know is the behavior I've seen here.  Which was arrogant.  I don't mind myself.  It's just harmless internet fun.  But she just wouldn't let it go.  I can't FORCE her to do anything.  I don't have that kind of power.  If she kept responding after she said she was done that was her choice.  No one MADE her do it.  That kind of thinking is like saying you FORCED this response from me.  You didn't make me do it.  I chose to.  Even if it was baiting I would still make the choice to take the bait or not.

Besides...  If one really was interested in ending the discussion and wanted it known, all one needs to do is say so without addressing any more arguments or making any more jabs.  The other person would have nothing to say to it.  She never did that.  She had to get her final little jabs in.
#49 | 105 days ago

When you accuse someone of "having no spine," you ARE forcing them to respond to that.  I don't care how you want to spin it, it's still egging someone on if you ask me.  You of course don't see it that way, but I (and most people on this site for that matter) DO see it that way.  When a girl who is as calm as a cucumber in real life and never gets into arguments with ANYONE on FanIQ starts going back and forth with someone, it's almost a guarantee the other person started and she wanted to make sure she said her peace before letting it go, even if it meant having to defend herself because the other person would NOT let it go, even though Kat tried to.  I am right, and for once I KNOW I AM RIGHT!  Until you've actually met her, you are wrong.

The spine comment came well after she decided she wanted to start an argument.  I merely went along with her intent.  You call it spin but it is indeed a fact.  You seem to like to forget that I was initially egged on here...  The difference is I'm not whining about it happening.

It is not a guarentee when it is plain for all to see that that person who was "calm as a cucumber in real life" was the one who initiated it.  First a small push in post #20 and then a huge arrogant one in post #24.  She did say her peace.  I said mine.  The she repeated her peace.  If she tried to let it go she sure didn't try very hard at all since she didn't for the longest time.

Why is it OK for her to defend herself but when I do it suddenly I'm the bad guy?  I'm not allowed to defend when attacked?  Why is that?

I have no argument with you regarding your impressions of your meeting with her.  Obviously I have no insight there since I was not privy to that meet.  But, that has nothing to do with the FACT of how she behaved here.  She very well could be exactly as you say.  But the fact remains, she was baiting and arrogant in this thread.

In all seriousness, we all know kat has a spine, I dont even think you can be alive without one. Maybe you can live for awhile, but i'm sure you would be a vegetable because you wouldnt be able to walk, and you wouldnt be able to sit up. Kat works at a bank, so i'm pretty sure she stands up, which tells me she has a spine.  I hope that clears things up.

(I actually agree with ML31 on this one...yikes.)

Anyways, the only ballpark I've recently gone to is Target Field.

With about 10 games in 2010 and 15 or so in 2011, I still can't get enough of it. Just a beautiful and clean ballpark. Concourses are spaced out well, cheap prices at the concessions, especially if you compare it to other parks, and with a few sit-down restaurants (Tony Olivia and Kent Hrbek have theirs inside the stadium, Smalley's is just outside of it) for those that don't want to see all nine innings of the game (I'm not one of those people, so haven't been). Also - for the April/September games when it's a little colder out - there's bars on the second level behind home plate that you can walk into for free, usually never crowded, and can sit on a bar stool, enjoy the beverage of choice, and watch in a heated area. That's usually where my grandpa likes to sit.

Also, being I've only been to a couple of baseball stadiums outside of Minnesota, I wasn't aware until recently that the Twins are one of the few to let you bring in your own food/non-alcoholic drinks. Great way to avoid extra costs for an already (relatively) cheap ticket.

Edit: And the always necessary picture of the view.

Though I have never been there, but the best attraction has to be the Bud Selig statue in Milwaukee.

I know this is completely random except as a reply to my post, I guess...Frito-Lay sunflower seeds have the MLB logo on them, and it says on all of the packages that they're the official sponsor of the MLB. This is either a new development since the last game I went to (I think they were selling Spitz brand), or it doesn't carry over to the parks for some reason.

Carry on...just a general musing.

I was tripping out on that too, I always thougth that David was the official sponsor of MLB. I'm stoked anyway, cuz I always liked Frito-Lay suns better than David anyway.

Frito-Lay are the only sunflower seeds, in my opinion. They've been a staple in my house and car, and anywhere else I am at the time for as long as I can remember. My husband likes the flavored ones. Ick...give me just the run-of-the-mill plain, please. And they're best when they're still all nice and vacuum packed.

This is the part that you clearly missed in post #28.

"This is my opinion and I realize that it may disagree with yours, but I'm not an argumentative person so I am happy to just let this end here!"

Read that carefully, because it's true.  She WAS willing to let it go, but YOU did not.  I am also done with you, reply with your usual jargon as I know you will, because that is your nature that you must always have the last word even when your responses have been hidden because they were attacking her by saying "you have no spine."  She explained herself, said her peace, and there was no need for it to escalate.  Your problem is you refuse to END something when the other person involved says what they want to and says that they are done debating something.  Your arrogant responses force a reply, and then you go into defensive mode ALWAYS blaming the other person and never taking responsibility for your own condescending attitude.  But as I said, I'm finished.  Let's get back to the topic at hand that was going fine until you started your usual shenanigans.  Good night!

Read the entire comment and put it in context.  She earlier accused me of a nonexistent condescending attitude and of lumping all kinds of people together.  It was an obvious playful comment contributing to the fun NorCal SoCal rivalry.  And much worse is said all over this site.  To be offended by something as innocuous as that is ridiculous.  If she truly was interested in ending it there she would have only said what you cited.  She had zero interest in dropping it there as her further comments proved.

Funny that you bring up the hidden post...  You know as well as I do that PQ's are normally clicked because of petty emotions rather than true offensive content.  There are many that consider PQ's a badge of honor.  It means that there are 4 people who are so annoyed with the fact that they cannot make valid arguments against what I said the best they could do is PQ.

There was no need for her to elaborate on anything to begin with.  All of her responses came across as baiting, condescending and trite.  (For the record, I never whine about such things like some others seem to...)   If another person wants to end it I'm good with that.  But you don't make absurd accusations and THEN say you are done.  But then, not only is that obvious I have flat out told you that already.  In spite of your obvious bias, you come across as a reasonably smart fellow at worst.  So I'm concluding that you MUST be getting it but are just stubbornly refusing to acknowledge it.
My REASONABLE responses do not force anything from anyone.  If someone wants to reply I can't control that.  I'm flattered that you think I have the ability to force people to do things but I can assure you I am mortal with control over no one's actions but my own.

And for the record...  It wasn't my shenanigans that took the thread off subject.  It was Kat's desire to go fishing for an argument.  You can't blame me for obliging her by voluntarily taking the bait...  Unless Kat is the one with the mind power FORCING people to respond to her posts!  (LOL!)

Yes, it is my nature to defend myself against unfounded attacks.  Just as it seems to be in your nature to make crap up about me.

Also shouldn't it be "there" not "their?"

So you get 195.75% of your daily sodium intake, when you eat half of a 4.5 oz bag. Glad I don't eat sunflower seeds anymore, I used to kill a bag a day, not even sure how big the bag was.

I LOVED the old Tiger Stadium.  My old man took me to a game when were passing thru years ago because I was a big Bo Jackson fan (they were playing the Royals). The Tigers had Trammel, Lou Whittaker, Micky Tettleton, Matt Nokes, etc.  Anyways, during BP, Bo was hitting them out of Tiger Stadium with ease.  An elderly usher told my pops and I that he had never seen such a thing in his 40+ years of ushering.  I'll never forget that.  Bo truly was a special athlete.

My favorite thing about Wrigley is the bleachers.  Truly unique in this day and age.  But you better get there early when playing good teams, because they fill up FAST.  I hear you though, Nick.  Your back is all sorts of sore after taking in a game.  That's when you drink more and hit Murphy's.  By the way, I miss the old Hi-Tops.  Place was like shooting fish in a barrel back in the day.

I've only been to two professional games...one at the Ballpark in Arlington, and the other at Camden Yards.  The Ballpark is a nice place, but our seats sucked.  We wound up sitting behind some big pillar thingy and kept having to crane our necks around to watch my beloved Braves whoop that a$$.  I had a blast in Baltimore.  Got totally $h*tfaced and spent a gorgeous evening discussing the fine points of hitting into a inning-ending double play with Carl Crawford.  That guy is such a sport.

Not a big fan of the Cubby Bear for the same reason you dislike Murphy's, though I did watch game 4 of the Hawks sweeping the Sharks there a few years back.  Left the Cubs game in the 4th inning, lol.

Big fan of Casey Moran's.  Though the service flat out sucks about 90% of the time, they have $1 beers on Thursdays (and I'm getting drunk tonight heeeeey-ohhh) and the beautiful waitstaff is friendly.  I dig the garden thingamajig too.

I'd have to say the greatest ball-park I have ever been to, and it's right in my backyard..is AT&T Park...the view is tremendous with the Bay out in right field and the Bay Bridge in Left Field..the food is tremendous. especially the garlic fries and the hospitality is the tops.

in my life I have visited the following parks

At&t Park-San Francisco
Candlestick Park-San Francisco
Oakland Mausoleum- Oakland
The Kingdome (no longer) Seattle
Anaheim Stadium--Los Angeles
Comerica Park--Detroit--the park was allright but if the U.S was divided into areas of  the body this location would be the butthole
Superdome--New Orleans ( football)
Chase Field--Phoenix..great park
Rangers Ball-Park in Arlington
Minute Maid Park--Houston
oh..of course..San Jose Arena--San Jose

my bucket list parks are

Fenway Park
Wrigley Field
Cellular Field
Yankee Stadium

I didn't think I could contribute to this poll than wah la, my memory kicked in, as a child I visited Dodger Stadium numerous times with assorted family, the drive up was awesome as I remember and the park it self a vertible playground. I really can't say much about scoreboards and such, since I spent most of my time scaring the bejessus outta myself climbing to the highest spot and looking down. They had great hot dogs back then.

If any of you are traveling to Chicago and want to see a CUBS game, let me know, in advance,  and I'll see what I can do with regards to hooking you up with my season ticket seats.

If we end up in Peoria (one of the places we could be transferred in June - which won't make me happy...no ocean; stupid river tenders. Ugh.), I just may take you up on that!

OH LORD!  PEORIA?!?!?  You're closer to ST.LOUIS.

I'll pray that you guys don't get transferred there!  That would suck!

Yea, since my work is strictly remote/online, I get to move wherever the Coast Guard takes us...so the actual transfer has to do with his job rather than mine.

One of the top two views in the Majors...

True locals recognize the Bay Bridge picturesquely spanning the bay beyond left field...

WAIT!   Your husband is in the Coast Guard?

And they want to send him to..........................PEORIA, IL ?!?!?!?!?!?  (head scratch)

What will he be guarding?     The coast of the Mississippi River?

I understand that he isn't actually a COAST GUARD

Hey, there's a Coast Guard station right by my house. My parents were members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Your husband can guard the casino.

I appreciate all the prayers that we don't end up there - I'm praying too!

Nick - they have buoy tenders that maintain buoys in the rivers near large bodies of water; such as the Great Lakes and oceans. My husband is a MK (which is Coast Guard for boat mechanic), so wherever there are any type of USCG boats, he has the opportunity/risk of being sent. Unfortunately, he put Peoria on his "wish" list, for the ATON experience only...which he needs for advancement.

ML and Michael - thanks for more pics of AT&T Park! My seats didn't have a great view of the bridge - I was probably 10 rows up, right along the first base line. Great seats for watching the game though!

When I go, I like to get section 302.  Or as close to it as possible.  The pic I posted is from the top row of section 302.  Yes, it is over right field but you still have great view of the infield.  My favorite thing about those seats is when there is a splash hit you never lose sight of the ball from bat to cove.

I wish I could afford to go to more games than I do....

HEY! There's nothing wrong with St. Louis! I haven't been to Busch III yet, but everyone says it's great. I miss Busch II. For the old cookie-cutters of the 60s & 70s, they kept it up & made it fresh up until 2005 when they demolished it. There was never a bad seat in the house!

The team is certainly a vast improvement over what's in Wrigley...LMAO

Seriously, I would love to go to every park before I visit the great Hall-of-Fame in the sky. I went to Comiskey II (now US Cellular) the year it opened, when the Sox made the playoffs and the place was already a dump! It would be neat to see the old barn on Addison.

I have a crusade to visit all ball parks before the end of my days as well...

I've been to games at 21 so far (including 5 that do not exist any more).   Planning on hitting Kaufman Field this summer to make it 22.

I got a chance to go to a Pirates/Cubs game at Wrigley a few years ago, it was a great experience.  I went with my friend, his dad, and his brother, and we were surrounded by Cubs fans.  But they didn't torment us, we all had fun.  I understood after that game why they call it the "friendly confines," because it most certainly is a great atmosphere.  I remember being out in SF in 1999, and they were building the new stadium, a cousin who lives out there was showing us around the city and we drove past the construction site of (Giants fans correct me if I'm wrong on the name) Pac-Bell Park as it was originally called.  I want to hit up Fenway, and would love to see a game at all 30 stadiums in my lifetime.  I went to an Angels game on vacation years ago, I wanna say it was 1995.  Anaheim Stadium didn't look like that in the outfield, the Rams were still playing there so this was before they took out all those outfield seats.  I have also seen a game at Tropicana Field...biggest eyesore in baseball, that place is a city dump!

You are correct sir.  The place was first called Pac Bell Park.  But then as a result of corporate mergers and what not it eventually became AT&T as we know it today.

Many out here refer it as "The Phone Booth" or my favorite, "Phone Company Park".  But I guess even that should be upgraded now to "Telecommunications Company Park".    (Yes, corporate sponsorships suck but at least it helped create the yard)

Isn't AT&T the 3rd company with naming rights?  That park has only been open for 12 years.  I thought Houston was bad.

It's the 3rd corporate name but it was always kinda sorta the same company.  Pac Bell was acquired by SBC then SBC decided to change to the more recognizable AT&T (which they had absorbed earlier but originally dropped the name)

The Coliseum has had more total sponsor changes than anyone I think...  MacAffe, UMAX, Network Associates and now O.com.

That's part it... The other part is that people have always just referred to it as the Coliseum. Period. So any sponsor is going to have a hard time getting past that.

When the new stadium in St. Louis was built, naming rights were discussed, but after what Gussie (August Busch, Jr.) had done for the city & the team and Sportsman's Park & the previous stadium were icons - like the 2 previous Yankee Stadiums were in New York - Busch III was an obvious.

In Cincinnati, Carl Linder still owned the team, so he took millions of dollars out of one pocket (Great American Life Insurance) and put it in the other pocket (Cincinnati Reds), even though Hamilton County, Ohio, owns the stadium!

Costs of building has to come from somewhere...  Corporate sponsorships do indeed help make these shiny new ball parks possible.  I very much like how the Giants built their yard and ought to be the blueprint for others.  The Giants arranged all the financing themselves taking nothing from the City and County of San Francisco.  The City did contribute in that they arranged a deal for a nice lease with the landowners (Union Pacific) and cut some red tape for them.  But nothing that any city does when new business wants to come to a city.

The Coliseum, on the other hand I do believe is owned by both the City of Oakland and Alameda County.  And I think the sponsorship deals were made by them.  Not the A's or Raiders.  Who I understand do not get much from the stadium sponsor.

That was the case in St. Louis, too. Here in Cincinnati, Linder just got fatter and us taxpayers just got poorer - just like what happened with Mike Brown & the Bengals with Paul Brown Stadium, the other albatross that is bleeding us dry, causing the City & County to go bankrupt, while the team profits.

At least Castellini and his group are trying to make the Reds respectable and giving back to the community (Somewhat. Don't get me started on the inner workings of the Reds Community Fund.).

The people of Santa Clara ought to look at the Cincinnati situation.  They are part of a deal with the 49ers in which the 49'ers pay NOTHING towards a BILLION dollar stadium.  The NFL stadium fund is contributing $200 million and the City of Santa Clara is taking out an $800 million loan.  With no plan on paying it back.  They had planned on finding $200 million in redevelopment funds to contribute but then Governor Brown striped redevelopment agencies dry.  They have nothing now.  This deal is going to financially ruin Santa Clara.  They will be on the hook for millions for decades while York will be lighting cigars with $100 bills.

Oh hush, I've already mentioned you for giving me a story for QTWIB.

On a serious note though, shoot me a link to any big article you see that I may miss, or a major story that affects your team.  I'd love to have more flavor from the Q in that weekly thing.  As I said yesterday in another comment somewhere else on the site, it's not fun having to canvas the Yahoo baseball section to find enough articles to fill up that blog every Friday.
