Cross-Country Scavenger Hunt (Edited 02/18/12 03:08PM by Jess)
Obviously the USCG doesn't mind moving us across the entire country every couple of years. Last time, summer of 2010, we hit a few cool places and picked up magnets in every state we passed through, but I felt like we were kind of robbed of seeing some of the things that this great nation has to offer. This was due to time constraints, the fact that we were pulling behind us a little U-Haul trailer, and we had two dogs kenneled in the back of our truck that I refuse to let ride inside my car. Since it was hotter than the 9th circle of hell coming through Tennessee and Georgia, we had to come up with a little make-shift air conditioner for them (we stuffed bags of ice in the bed of the truck all the way around each kennel - cooled it off quite well, I must say), and we were not open to spending much time pretty much on any of our "stops". But I digress...

This time, we're shipping the dogs to board until we get there. We've decided that although it is not a "straight line" home to do so, we're going to go up the east coast all the way to Boston and see some sights, and cut west. Here is a list that we already have put together of places we want to go for various reasons, logical or not:
  • Savannah, GA
  • Williamsburg, VA (maybe, we haven't decided for sure)
  • Washington DC (we'll stay a couple of days here, we think)
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • New York City, NY (just because...)
  • Boston, MA (at least a full day)
  • Cooperstown, NY (off the beaten path, but whatever)
  • Cleveland, OH
  • Canton, OH
  • Southbend, IN (Trev wants to go see the Notre Dame campus, he always wanted to go there when he was a kid)
  • Chicago, IL  (maybe a full day)
  • Various baseball games, wherever, (nosebleed seats if possible) throughout the trip.
Where are some other places you'd recommend that we check out that aren't too far off the beaten path?  Remember, this trip will be Mid-July through Mid to Late-August, and we don't necessarily have unlimited funds, especially since we're planning another Orlando trip before we leave Florida.

With any sports stuff that we find it possible to hit, I plan on reporting back here with a "cross-country sports blog" series. We're hoping to be able to hit at least 3 or 4 games on the way, and our stay in Canton will definitely help. I will also make sure my camera is fully charged and ready for each day!

(Edited to include map of general path)

What would also be cool is to see how many Q'ers you can meet on your way. Not necessarily a whole day with them or anything but a nice little meet and greet would be neat. If you're comfortable with that....

We were just talking about that tonight, actually. We realized that our route takes us through Buffalo, and that Buffalo is too close to Niagara Falls not to go. And hey while we're in Niagara Falls, we might as well cross the border and look at it from the Canada side. And well heck, while we're in Canada, we may as well head a couple more hours up to Toronto for the Hockey Hall of Fame...(this trip is going to be insane...I can see this all falling "together" now)

Nashville is a cool place to visit. If I remember correctly Jess, you don't like country music, however there are other types to choose from. There are some pretty cool blues-bars, not as many as Memphis though. Speaking of Memphis...I haven't ever visited Graceland, maybe you could do that. I'm not sure what's too far off the beaten path. Just have fun and make in memorable.

We actually went through Nashville when we came down a couple summers ago. We were pretty excited to drive by LP Field...we didn't stop anywhere though; it was hot and we had the dogs. I should have put a map up there to show which way we're going - we're going directly up the east coast and cutting over, so we won't be going through Tennessee at all this time. I will say, going through Tennessee, I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it is.

Sure...Pick up LeBron and take him home to Akron on your little road trip, but skip the south part of Ohio. I see how you treat us Buckeyes! LOL

Just say HI to Joy, Melanie, Victoria & Elka when you get to Cleveland wink

In Chicago I would recommend the museum campus (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and Soldier Field). Just a few blocks away is also Millennium Park and the Art Institute.

It sounds like a great time to me. I would tell you to come visit the Ozarks but that's a little out of the way.

And do not pass up Wrigley Field if you get the chance. Even if you don't like the Cubs she's a grand old lady. smiley

Nah, as LJ noted, it's in the burbs.  Lincoln Park Zoo is free and it's in the city.

Jess, make sure you try some of the local cuisine as well.

I'm stoked you guys are going to see Our Lady (Notre Dame).  You can hate our football team all you want, but I'd be shocked if you didn't love the campus.  It truly is a very special and unique place.  Everyone I know that roots for another team and visits raves about the ND experience.  Even though you aren't going on a gameday, you'll feel "the vibe."

Here's a list of spots you should try and see:

Notre Dame Stadium (duh!)
The Grotto
Touchdown Jesus (which is the library)
The Main Building (Golden Dome)
The "Gug" - Guglielmino Athletics Complex
The Basilica
LaFortune
Mendoza College of Business (#1 business school in America)
Compton Ice Arena
Purcell Pavilion
Eddy St Commons
Hammes Bookstore
Knute Rockne Memorial
The Lakes

I could go on and on.  I LOVE Notre Dame.  If you're hungry, eat at one of the dining halls (I prefer the South dining hall - it's more old school).  You'd be hard pressed to find better food (college wise) than you would at Notre Dame.  Just walk about the campus and you should be able to see just about everything.  It isn't huge like most state schools.

Sounds like an awesome trip.  I'm definitely jelly.

To add to that, in the Summer, we have Architectural River Tours.......you get on an open roofed boat and you have a guide that talks about all of the Chicago Architecture while you cruise down the river.....I think it's an 1 1/2 hour trip?

Did it a few times with a company I used to work at......it was very cool....even if you're not into buildings and what-not due to the history behind it all.

The boats leave from Navy Pier.  > http://www.chicagotraveler.com/architecture-river-cruise">http://http://www.chicagotraveler.com/architecture-river-cruise

Plus, Navy Pier has a bunch of cool stuff to check out......your daughter would love it, including a Giant Ferris Wheel and an IMAX theatre. >  http://www.navypier.com/things2do/things_home.html

Awesome, thank you! My husband will be thrilled with all this info, for sure. We'll make it a little Notre Dame scavenger hunt inside a scavenger hunt. I love it.

I don't know how I missed this, but yes visiting Our Lady is a must. The Campus is beautiful, I know it won't be a game-day, but seeing ND is an experience of it's own.

I completely missed this, but you should check out a game at PNC Park, you're going through Erie and it's about a 2-hour drive from I-90 in Erie into Pittsburgh.  Everyone who visits from other cities claim it's one of the best ballparks in the country. (For the record, that novelty has worn off for me after 12 years, but I'm not a visiting fan.)
