What are YOU giving up?
It's that time of the year folks - Lent - a time in which most of us give something up.  Lent is defined as: (in the Christian religion) an annual season of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday and lasting 40 weekdays to Easter, observed by Roman Catholic, Anglican, and certain other churches.

So...what are you going to give up this year?

Was wondering how long it would take to see this response.  Our priest made a joke about it at mass on Sunday.  It was well received.

I'm giving up liquor, but not all alcohol.  St. Patty's Day is my favorite holiday next to Thanksgiving.  Good work, though!

the sad part is I'm serious....I'm not trying to be a smart arse about it.  Went to a Methodist church....that didn't feel right, but there's a lot less "RULES".

everyone gets on my nerves. lol I didn't switch yet & don't think that I will....I'd feel like a traitor or a sell out, course at the same time I don't really believe in god/christ anyway...it's such a MIND F-CK. I went to the Methodist church & the priest or whatever they're called over there, he was taking shots at Catholicism....I just don't get it....YOU'RE ALL CHRISTIAN. It's like the DEMS AND REPS....you're all American. Damn....I went off on a tangent.

That's fine.  Catholicism isn't for everyone.  Not going to get into a debate about it, though.

They all have a lot 'rules'.  Some of them even have rules against drinking. Not Catholics. I've never been to a church event that wasn't serving massive quantities of alcohol.

I'm not so much giving up something. Last year I tried being nicer to people that I work with, that didn't last throughout Lent, so this year I decided that I would work out 3 times a week. It gives me incentive to do it and its much easier than being nice to the Wiglet! smiley

I give up nothing for lent.  If I give up something it will be because I choose to.  Not because some religion's rules dictate I do.

I am giving up the same things I give up every year. Heroin, Gay Sex and Religion.

if my priest doesn't wants me to give up something,  he can try and take it from me.

Even though Roman Catholicism isn't me anymore, more recently, this time of year reminds me of a fantastic HBO documentary called "Hard As Nails." It's really good in a scared straight way and delves into how personal sacrifices / suffering should be or can be used to help others. Specifically those who need it most. (Remind you of anybody? Guy from Nazareth?) It's brutally honest and emotionally raw. I actually donated some money to the ministry after seeing it. Might be worth a look, no matter what your views on faith and religion are.

I have some small sacrifices during Lent and that I have to set aside all my sports activities and do Fasting during this season.  I also usually give up wearing jewelries as one kind of my fasting not only food intake as we usually do. I'm Catholic by the way.
