Reality / Documentary shows on cable
Are there any shows on cable that are reality based (not talking about mindless crap like Jersey Shore or Kardashians), but more educational that you watch?

I don't watch a whole lot of "educational" reality shows on cable besides "How it's Made," "How do they do it?" and maybe Mythbusters.

I love the reality/contest cooking shows on Food Network - every last one of them.

I also watch Deadliest Catch, the Dead Files, The Haunted, and I love the Travel Channel. I also almost always watch How the States Got Their Shapes...I can't remember which channel that's on, History I think?

Also - I'm hopelessly addicted to the ID Channel.

I've been watching Storage Wars on A&E, where thrift store owners bid on storage lockers and find valuable stuff inside. The show is dumb, but always sucks me in.
#6 | 773 days ago

Mythbusters, 30 for 30 docs and the stuff on PBS like Nova, History Detectives, Frontline, etc. I liked the Stephen Hawkings shows on BBC but I'm not sure if they are even on anymore.

I wouldn't necessarily call The First 48 educational, but it's the only reality show I will watch that's not sports based

I watch "I Survived..." on BIO,  stories about people surviving accidents, rapes, attempted murders etc... outstanding program.
#9 | 772 days ago

Anthony Bourdain's The Layover and No Reservations.

They may not be overtly educational.  I'd argue that the introduction to other cultures/parts of America leans that way, though.
#10 | 772 days ago

The shows don't need to be educational, just not the ones where they have a bunch of idiots living together with a camera following them around on everything.
#11 | 772 days ago

Finding Bigfoot
Sons of Guns
Pawn Stars
American Pickers
American Restorations

Most of what I watch is usually on the History Channel, Discovery, and Animal Planet.
#12 | 772 days ago

I like American Pickers, Frank makes me laugh. Sons of Guns is good when they aren't talking!

If it's not sports or news, then those are the kinds of shows I watch.

Ancient Aliens
Finding Bigfoot
20/20 on ID
America's Book of Secrets
Swamp People

I love the History Channel, H2, ID Channel, Discovery Channel, or the Documentary Channel

History, Discovery and Nat Geo are my favorite channels. I love documentaries, but I like some shows like Top Shot, UFO files, deadlliest  catch, and some others you have mentioned before, basically I look for something to watch when I'm in bed, that's the only time of the day when I can relax  a little bit and watch TV. I also watch some shows about food, even when I don't like to cook I love to eat and they are fun to watch. When I'm in the mood for some banality I watch those shows about changing looks.smiley
#17 | 769 days ago

Swamp People, Chopped (and a lot of food network in general), First 48, sometimes I still watch Mobsters, Snapped, and Cathouse, if those count.

I like documentaries, so I'll watch them as I come across ones that interest me.

Does porn count??   Because I've learned a couple maneuvers over the years from watching

I like watching the Discovery Channel and the Biography Channel.  Once in a while, I'll watch HGTV, the Food Network or the DIY channel.

I used to watch Modern Marvels on the History Channel.  But when they started running out of marvels their definition of a marvel changed...  It went from "Modern Marvels: Mt Rushmore" or "Modern Marvels: The Hoover Dam" to "Modern Marvels: Sugar".

I've also been known to tune into Mythbusters on occasion.

The best REALITY show is COPS. 20 yrs & still going . I do like Pawn Stars. Everytime I hear them say Chumlee I think of Tennessee Tuxedo's sidekick Chumley, his walrus friend. It's an old cartoon. (Shut up. I can't help when I was born & TV was my babysitter). I watch Storage Wars & American Pickers but I get them mixed up, & they're on all the time. I know they're scripted. They pay extras to be in the background, & advertise for people with valuable & unusual items to bring in (& pay them to do it) & be on the shows. They plant items in the units & research the items before they're "found". So in that way, I learned a lot.
" Parking Wars" because 1st they're in Philly & 2nd it's good. They added Detroit, which is fine. They've got rage too. But now they're adding Rhode Island to "Parking Wars". There's a BIG difference between the rage, reactions, & entertainment value with Detriot & Philadelphia than those in Rhode Island.
I really like "Project Runway", but can't stand any of their imitators.
Anything that has "Jersey", "Real", or "Housewives" in the title I stay far away from. And everything else that comes on is insane.
A fun one a few years ago called "Airline" that showed the good, the bad, & the ugly of a couple airlines, Southwest & one in the UK showing their management, passengers, & crew in real situations. It was before all the skank & 'whoTF cares' shows with idiots getting paid uber $. Then there was "America's Most Smartest Model", where they tried to find America's dumbest model without the models knowing it. That was funny. And I always watched "TIl Death Do Us: Part Carmen & Dave" and "Toddlers & Tiarras", though "Little Miss Perfect" was way better.
I did actually learn from "Cash Cab", COPS.

The Dead Files is a show with a psychic and a former NY Cop and they investigate places that are supposed to be haunted. Its less over dramatic then most of the other paranormal and ghost hunting shows they leave out most of the "do it for tv" stuff so its a little more interesting

and Ancient Aliens is spectacular .... i have yet to see an episode i didnt enjoy (although i am kinda geekish like that)

I LOVE The Dead Files. You forgot to tell him....the psychic and former cop investigate separately and then join up at the end of the show to compare findings. Such a fun show. The psychic is kind of an oddball, and I laugh at her a lot, but it's still really good.

Everyone knows MTV doesn't show any of the "M" IN MTV.  It all reality shows.  But when did the History Channel forget the "History"? It has shows like Hairy Bikers, Swamp People, & Cajun Pawn Stars.
Where did the "Arts" go in A&E, the Arts & Entertainment Channel? A&E shows Dog the Bounty Hunter, Monster In-Laws, Duck Dynasty, Billy the Exterminator, & shows about Steven Segal, the Jackson, & Gene Simmons. I don't even see the entertainment. TruTV? ActualityTV? Is anything true? Lizard Lick Towing, Operation Repo, Hardcore Pawn, & now The Weiner's Circle, about hot dogs. Three's Company was less rehearsed.
TLC is The Learning Channel with shows like Sister Wives, Toddlers & Tiaras, Strange Sex, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding,  & the newest one Mama's Boys of The Bronx
AMC is American Movie Classics. That channel shows Monsterfest (cool), Breaking Bad, Mad Men, & The Walking Dead (which I DO LOVE).

ICE PILOTS..The guy owns old prop airplanes, mostly DC3`s. They have the highest DC3 inventory in the world. And it`s a Canadian show! :)
#35 | 729 days ago

Ice Road Truckers
Deadliest Catch
Ice Pilots NWT
Weird or What
First 48
Swamp People
Gold Rush
Dog whisperer
Paroles and Pitbulls
Pit Boss Or whatever it's called with the little people and the pitbulls)
Occasionally Storage Wars or Hoarders, but I worked at a storage facility and had to open one up that....well never mind.  And my neighbor is a pet hoarder so they are both a little close to home)
