500,000,000 MILLION dollars!

As you may well know, the Mega Millions jackpot is up to an all time record 500 million dollars.  It is played in 42 states and you have an estimated 1 in 176 million chance at winning it all.   You are 19 times more likely to make 2 holes in one during a round of golf than you are of hitting it big.  So, knowing all this, are you still going to take your chances and hope they call your numbers this friday night?

I would play but it just takes too much effort to stop to the store, get out of my truck, walk in to said store, stand in line, then when I get to the front I'd of forgotten which numbers I wanted to pick and end up doing an easy-pick which will be a big fat LOSER. I just prefer to donate my money to help clothe those girls in strip clubs. They're the ones who really need it. "Just a dollar a day could help a stripper buy some warm clothes" Please help those cold cold strippers crying

That's the advantage of selling the lottery in the gift shop at the hospital.  I don't have to make a special trip, I can just go waste 5 minutes of my lunch and throw some money away.

nah. but going for two holes in one sounds like fun!

I will play, I know I won't win, I know all the more likely scenarios to occur. But here is why I will play, the $10 I will spend to get some numbers will not affect my life at all. The $359,000,000.00, that the $10 I have spent on a remote chance of winning, would change my life forever. So anyone can say that I am wasting $10, but that money will change absolutely nothing, if I don't spend it on something. The Mega-millions gives me the best chance to have that $10 change my life.

I put in $10 into our office pool.  I maybe play the lottery once every few years.  Too much money to not take a chance if you ask me.  You can't win if you don't play (yeah, I know it's cliche - sue me).

Here's the funny thing.  A guy in front of me at the store last night purchased $250 worth of tickets.  The difference in odds between 1-250 are so astronomically small....it's freakin' retarded to buy that many tickets.  I also heard Rob Dyrdek bought like 7K worth of tickets.....lol.  I'd probably do the same thing if I was ballin' like him.

I'm in...just cuz I can be!

I'm going to buy a ticket, because why not. I do enjoy reading about the odds and probability though.

From an article on a math blog about the mega millions entitled, 'The lottery is a tax on people bad at math' - LOL, basically trying to explain to people like JD mentioned why spending a lot of money on these lotteries is an awful, awful idea.

"The odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 175,711,536, it is (56 choose 5) times 46. How much is 175,711,536? Let’s try a comparison. The government estimates that in the US we have 1.3 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles. If you drive one mile to buy a ticket and one mile back, your probability to die is 2.6/100,000,000. The probability of dying in a car accident while you drive one mile to buy a lottery ticket is five times higher than the probability of winning the jackpot... For all practical purposes, the chance of winning the jackpot are zero."

and this fun fact:

"If you count all other payouts then you are likely to get back 18 cents for every dollar you invest. You are guaranteed to lose 82% of your money. If you spend $1000 a year on lottery tickets, on average you will lose $820 every year."

I couldn't read Nyce's post... too much unnecessary info and numbers. I may spend $2 on a some tickets, if I'm not too lazy to stop. I usually am too lazy to stop.

Don't worry you're doing it right. If you would have said "I'm going to stop and get 200 tickets..." that would have been a problem, lol.

I will make the sacrifice of one beer (2 bucks) to invest on the chance to win 500 million dollars. Knowing fully that I stand a better chance of being mauled by a grizzlie bear & a polar bear...on the same day.

I believe that you have a better chance of being mauled by a grizzly and polar bear on the same day, than you do of finding a $2 beer.

The Expected Value of playing the lottery is negative. I never would've guessed! cheeky

Steel Reserve? Icehouse? Aren't those the beer choices of the homeless... (and maybe Ken-neh drinks Steel Reserve)? I figured that's what he was sacrificing.

During happy hour you can get 2 draft beers for those $2. if you drink enough during happy hour, you may wish you had been mauled by a grizzly bear or polar bear when you see whats laying next to you.

Oh. I'm not a beer drinker, so I don't know.... and when I do buy beer, I've never bought a single one.
