Calling 911 (Edited 04/17/12 07:21PM by )
Have anyone ever called 911 while traveling in their car in an effort to prevent someone from being harmed. What was your reason for calling and do you know the outcome?

I used to work a seasonal job 2.5 hours from home. One day while driving there I was following what I believed to be a drunk driver or possible an ill old man. He was swaying his vehicle all over the road , crossing the yellow line many times. This was a country road with only one lane going in each direction. I called 911 and stayed on the phone with them as I followed this vehicle till Police could catch up too him.  They in fact did catch up to him and after being cut off several times by him they were able to safely get the man to the emergency lane. I then passed them and went on with life. However, when returning back home I noticed that his vehicle was still there and tagged. So yes! I helped get a drunk driver off the road. smiley

These 2 dudes while traveling on I-4 were driving crazy..... like slamming on their brakes, almost hitting each other, coming close to running into other cars. I don't know if it was a road rage thing, but I really didn't want to find out.

I didn't dial 911, but I've dialed local PD # for a road hazard.  Construction had left those plates covering a hole, but the square plate wasn't correctly, so the plate was held up by 2 corners, doing that little see-saw bouncing action everytime a car drove over it.  I don't know how many more times it could have been driven over before falling in, but the next time I drove through, the darn thing was set correctly.

I've called 911 twice once was an accident directly in front of me (@sswad passing on the right clipped the car on the left) causing the person on the left's vehicle to flip numerous times the driver was the only survivor, I stayed to help administer first aid @sswad on the right left the scene.

2nd time like Dallas had a truck careening all over the road he ended up hitting me making me miss my first day of training at my new job, drunk illegal immigrant.

4 years ago Linda, I went to see my dad. It was around 6pm, and had been raining, it was dark , and hardly any traffic.  An eighteen wheeler had hit a truck, and i could see the driver's feet and legs hanging from the passenger side.  I also could see the driver of the  truck laying, as it seemed at the time, unconscious.  There were no cars at all, I called 911 from my car, and then went to check on them. I was scared to death because I was alone.....and could see smoke, But both were ok, and alert, definitely in pain, but no body parts missing (that was my fear) . Ambulance and highway patrol arrived in like 5 minutes that felt like hours.  That was a feel good event, but also a scary one!!

Exactly 1 year ago, I was riding on my friends car heading northbound to Portland, OR to attend one of are buddhist meeting, there's a car on the next lane were drunk driving, because I saw the driver were drinking a can of beer and also was trying to hit us. Plus, he was intoxicated. So, I picked my cell phone and called 911 and gave the description of the vehicle and then the Oregon State Police arrested drunk driver off the freeway and took him to behind the bars!

Recently I called 911 reporting a driver possibly intoxicated and veering all over the roadway. We started in Ohio and traveled into Indiana. The vehicle left the roadway several times and also crossed the center line several times. Speeds increased and decreased from excessive to dangerously braking. When the County Police in the Indiana county we were in had finally intercepted the vehicle and stooped the male driver, he was found to have dementia.

This is not, nor will it be the last time I have or will do my part in keeping my family or other innocent people safe!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!! As a veteran of Public Safety, I urge each and everyone to do their part in keeping all of our friends, family, and other people safe whether it be a man, woman or child!!! We never know what the circumstances may be in ANY situation. That's why responders are there and ready to intervene. If there is no immediate danger or threat to life or property, there is no harm done in being concerned.

I called 911 to report an accident....and was put on HOLD!!! I then called the local PD, where I knew the desk sergeant, and reported the accident.  About 5 minutes later, using Caller ID, the 911 operator called me BACK...wondering what my emergency was...sheesh, I would hate to think how long it would take if there were a SERIOUS emergency!
Never needed to.

I didn't actually make the call, but I told my coworker to call a few months ago when we saw a car swerve across 4 lanes of highway traffic, drive over a median, knock a tree over, then smash into a hill in the middle of a jug-handle U-Turn.  indecision
My stupid, reckless ass was too busy running towards the smoking vehicle to help the driver get the passenger out of the car.  Luckily, she was ok with some minor injuries and the car did NOT explode.

I have no issue with calling 911, though.  Every time I walk into a convenience store late at night, I've already got the 9-1 dialed, on the just in case.  I'll be the chick hiding behind the Funions, pressing that last -1, when the place is held-up.

Last summer I called 911 on a tractor-trailer unit that was following a car too closely.  I mean like a foot between the car and the rig.  I had taken note of the license on the rig, because he was hitting his brakes, then speeding up.  As we went around a corner in the highway, I could see exactly how close he was to the car in front.  The car pulled into the golf course, which was where I was heading, so I stopped and the man driver was elderly, but still had his wits about him.  He had been doing the speed limit, wasn't under it at all.  The man was visibly shaken and once he calmed down he became furious.  I called 911 and reported the rig, told them what mile marker he should be at, and how the driver of the car was.  They called me about an hour later to let me know they had apprehended the rig driver, who was also under the influence.  My boss at the golf course happened to drive in behind us (I was still with the driver of the car, trying to calm him down) and stopped to see what was up.  He invited the gentleman up to the clubhouse and actually sprung for some food.

About a month later I got another call telling me that he had pled guilty to multiple charges and was without his license for 3 years as a repeat offender.

About a week ago while I was home sick my daughter pocket dialed 911.  I got a couple of "unknown name, unknown number" calls on the house phone and my cell.  The RCMP actually drove out to my house to make sure she was okay and insisted on speaking with her in private to make sure she wasn't dialing because I was abusing her or something.  I didn't object, but asked her to change her unlock pattern on her phone so it wouldn't happen again.  Of course, my neighbors all think I'm in big trouble with the law.

I have a couple of times, once for an acident I saw on the highway, and once when this chick across the street came running over to the house because her boyfriend had been beating her ace. Police came and picked him up, and I never had any problems with him.

Also on the whole burning car thing, they just burn  when they are on fire, they don't explode like in the movies. Mythbusters busted that ol wives tale.

Yeah I did. Bein a physician's assist'nt I just can't let somebody suffer at the hands of another. Too bein part Cajun I tend to jump in with l'il regard to my own safety and do what I can to start the process goin to help till I get more help there. I've been told by co-workers that worked the ER or on the ambulance crew it's really funny to hear of somebody who only specialized in birthin babies to help out with a beatin, stabbin, or a shootin; not to mention anyother emergency. But hey, a life's a life even if sometime you feel it's not worth savin.

I have never called 911.  I have called the non-emergency police # several times.

Before the new management company took the condos where I live, there were some seedy characters living here.  A mother and a son each lived two doors from me (on opposite sides) and they used to fight on my doorstep at all hours of the night.  I called on them a lot.  The son was an accessory to murder, so I was happy to see him go.

A while back, I was home and it was late at night.  Some guy tried my door and then peeked in my window.  I called to report him as well.

Oh, I almost forgot...this one time at band camp this wasn't while driving in my car, but I used to check parking lots downtown, and I came across this guy (homeless, I think) who was on the ground.  I usually find people sleeping back behind the cars parked and ask them to leave, but this guy was non-responsive, and twitching.  A 911 call brought paramedics, who were able to revive him.  He was overdosing on heroin.

Yep  -
- Drunk driver on the road in front of us
- Domestic abuse out by the fairgrounds where my mom lives around Christmastime - they used to do this huge lights display that you could drive through and we were parked looking at a cool display and this chick came up to the car freaking out, telling us her husband was crazy and wanting to get in the car. What a mess.
- Suspicion of a possible abduction/non-consensual sex in a pub parking lot. The girl was screaming at a guy to leave her alone, and a guy was trying to get her into a van, ripping at her clothes. I don't know if they knew each other and she was just mad at him or what...figured we'd let the police sort it out, either way.
- Called to report a car make & model and description of the kids who were in it...with a gun, going after some other kids.

I've also called in accidents before - One time we were the first on the scene of an accident, and we stayed with the lady (she hit a tree and was pinned in the driver's seat and couldn't move - we took care of the dogs that were in the back and called her husband for her as well as 911) and waited with her until help got there.

These were all in small towns, population of less than 2k people. Sad.

From what I read Jess you guys made great calls for all.  Sometimes when people are drinking it's difficult to decide which is the guilty person.  I'm really happy to hear that you stayed with the poor lady pinned in the car and helped with the dog's. I had to call 911 this past Saturday on my way to work....saw a truck come from the right lane when the highway was going from 2 lanes down to 1...he was over by the shoulder, then made a late shift, cutting me off.  I was following him and noticed he was hitting the center line.  I thought he was texting while driving, nothing more.  Got behind him at the next light, and when it turned green, he started to go.  All of a sudden, he moved all the way over to the left side of the roadway and was traveling WEST on the eastbound shoulder, almost hitting a car that was heading east.  He came back to the westbound lane, and I called 911, keeping my distance.  After the next traffic light, I saw him turn into a shopping center.  Long story short...nobody was hurt, and the cops called me today to get a little more info from me and said the guy was found in the parking lot and charged with DUI.  Thank God nobody was killed.
