Don't have a tat, don't want one, and never quite got the fascination with them, but to each their own. Do you.

3 tats soon to be 4

1. Upper right arm, 16 years ago, Notre Dame Leprechaun, my love of Notre Dame Football

2. Upper left arm, 12 years ago, woman on an anchor with "Erin Go Bragh" in a banner above it, in honor of my Irish heritage. I am thinking about turning it into a full sleeve of many different things Irish.

3. Side of right calf, 7 years ago, American flag/German flag with my last name running down the middle of both flags, in honor of my German heritage. I am thinking about turning it into a sock of many different things German.

4. Side of left calf, coming next Tuesday, Anatomical pig heart(colored to look like bacon), spraying bacon grease out of the top with said grease settling into a skull below the heart, and a banner across the heart that reads bacon in either Gaelic or German, my love of Bacon.

The funny thing about tattoos is that they are addicting. I always said I was going to get one tattoo(the first one I got). Now, I have an appointment for my 4Th and am thinking about doing a sleeve and a sock.

I sure think it is different for men and women. My dad and grandfathers didn't want me to have one, so to honor them I never got one.

I think we are creating an era of eventual grandmothers who are going to have some pretty sad ink.
"Yes dear, even in the 1990's it was called a tramp stamp..."

Sad.

(Edited by Jess)
Yes, and I love them. I think they're a beautiful form of self expression and I don't care what happens to them when I get all old and wrinkly...my skin will look crazy anyway, it might as well be colorful.

I have a celtic septagram on my upper back. I don't necessarily take from it the same meaning as others, but I love what each point and the encircling of it represents to me. Six of the points represent something special to me in nature, and the seventh represents me.  The circle encompasses us all together. Yes it's hippie-talk. No, I don't care. (2nd tattoo - got it in 2004)

I have a dragonfly on my foot - I got this right before we moved from our last station and it is symbolic of being open to change/new beginnings. (3rd tattoo - 2010)

And yes, I have a tramp stamp - and I'm not ashamed. It depicts two dolphins playing in seaweed. I got it right after my split from the ex- I've always been a big fan of dolphins and their playfulness, trust, and happiness gives me an inner peace.  (1st tattoo - got it in 1999)

(not particularly happy with their tails, and it needs touched up when I change it - but I'm cool with the basics of it)

I plan on getting another one on the inside of my wrist before we move away from here. I'm seriously considering another dragonfly design of sorts. I'm also thinking about getting something on the back of my neck.

The big design I want will incorporate the dolphins on my lower back, wrap around my waist and crawl up the side - something with water morphing into a lily or few.

I also have a few piercings.

*edit*  - all of my tattoos mean something VERY special to me, regardless of where they are or when I got them. They're not only a part of my body, but they each represent a part of my soul. No matter how many I get, what I get, or where I get them, it will always be that way. When I wanted my first tattoo my mom said to me "I advise you to wait one year before getting it. If you still want the same thing, in the same place, after that year is up then you should get it." I did, and the rest is history. There are different little tweaks I'd like to make to my first and second tattoos now, but nothing that will destroy their foundation or hide them in any way.

As many know, I am a huge NASCAR fan.   I wanted to have  small one done on my right ankle out of respect for Dale Earnhardt Sr and all he did for the sport.  The local tattoo artist (her daughter and my daughter are friends) has designed one for me that is soooooo tasteful and not just a big black 3.  I made a pact with my son that we will do them together.  He is designing one himself and has been working on it for a few years.  It is the same thing always, with small tweaks and an improvement in talent wink.   We will be making the appointment to get them done very soon, as he turns 19 next month.  That was our deal, 16 for the piercings, 19 for the tattoos.

My hubby is turned off by tattoos, but understands it means a lot to me, so has promised he won't freak out.

I don't have any but it is a personal preference, as it is with folks that have them. My dad had a ton of the old school ones basically having them done while in the early days of his military service. He had some chick named 'Donna' on his arm and that wasn't my mom's name. It scarred me for life as far as ever thinking about putting a chick name in permanent ink on my body. Nowadays, tats are a work of art and self-expression, I get it. I just haven't had the urge to get one. Who knows, if I make it to a certain milestone, I may have a cuss word tattooed on me somewhere.
