I have become comfortably numb.
I feel one of the great things about this place is how so many different ages and eras are combined. Everyday we interact with people from the 50's to the 2000's . And while we still all have our love of sports, music is where the generations differ. Great music is timeless, it passes from one generation to the next. Hell I named my daughter Janie after the song from Aerosmith.

I was lucky enough to come from a generation of music that changed the rules, and the world. My generation gave us Stephen Tyler, Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson, Sonny and Cher, Pink Floyd, and the Carpenters. The 70's was arguably the greatest decade of music.  And I cannot forget the group that changed me into the person I am Pink Floyd. Music is the universal language  So, what music made you who you are?

I'm a 90's kid and the music I grew up with ranged from grunge alternative to hip-hop to r&b.  Some of my favorite bands artists include....

Pearl Jam
Counting Crows
Green Day
The Roots
Nas
Jay-Z
Tupac
Biggie
Boyz II Men
Kieth Sweat
Soundgarden
Bush
Oasis
Dr. Dre
Snoop Dogg
Smashing Pumkins
RATM
RHCP
Master P and the entire No Limit familia
Juvenile and the entire Cash Money familia
Camp Lo
Afu Ra

I could do this all day...so I'm going to stop.

Here's my thing about today's music - most of it sucks IMO.  At least the "pop" genre.  Although I've never been a huge fan, at least artists of yesteryear were creative.  Today's "artists" use computers to generate beats, sounds etc.  The thing that annoys me most is the damn auto tune machine.  If you can't sing (I'm looking at you Lil Wayne), you can't sing.  Go back to rapping like you did on "Tha Block is Hot" because that sh*t was raw.

I just wish people would be more creative and use actual instruments instead of relying on computers to help their cause.  Sort of like how I wish Hollywood would stop making fifty movies in every comic book series.  What happened to telling a new story instead of hearing Spiderman's 80 times?  I'll hush up because that's an argument for another day.

my folks wouldn't let me listen to the "hit station" until i was in high school and raised me on stuff like paul simon, harry nilsson, yes and cat stevens. by the time i was allowed to hear my stuff, i was more interested in exploring more old stuff.

that or weird al.

Growing up our  mom let us listen to pop/top40 or country. There was the "oldies" (50's-60's), R&B (Motown) and Blues played alot in the house, so while all my friends were into Floyd, Black Sabbath and Aerosmith, I was more into Stevie, Marvin, Earth Wind and Fire, the Bee Gees, jim Croce and The Temptaions.  Of course there was George Jones, Charlie Rich and Charlie Pride, Barbara Mandrell and the Statler Brothers. My mom loved her some Coco Taylor, Muddy  Waters and of course BB KIng.

When I was in the military my room dawg listened to Jazz and I developed a love for Earl Klugh, Bob James, Stanley Clarke and Grover Washington, then while stationed in Turkey I had a POS with no tape player so all I could pick up on the radio was some kind of screeching, groaning  crap and one classical station so I got into some Vivaldi and Mozart. Thank God for AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Station)on base. There was a guy I worked with who loved the "oldies", but his definition of "oldies" was Sinatra and Dean Martin so thats where I developed a taste for music from that era.

There really isnt much I cant listen to except Rap now. Kurtis Blow, Tupac, Too Short, NWA are all guys I could listen to,but now blah.

I grew up mostly on rock from different generations, but some from other genres too. To this day, I don't listen to much of what I did as a 90's teen anymore as I burned out on it from listening to it too much.

Great poll, Glenda! heart  - Popping in for a moment before I go back to my vacation activities!

I grew up (pre-teen) in the 70's and early 80's with my teen years in the 80's.  My mom listened to a ton of Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, Donna Summers and James Taylor while my dad was into CCR, The Hollies and Neil Diamond.

I was a huge Styx, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Rush, Journey, Tom Petty and The Cars fan when I was young (70's & early 80's)

Then in HS (mid to late 80's), I listened to Van Halen, Ozzy, Zeppelin, The Doors, Floyd, Yes, The Grateful Dead, Marley, Rush, U2, Steely Dan, Metallica, Judas Priest, The Scorpions, Ratt and Queensryche..

Then in the 90's, it was more of the Pantera, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots thing for me.

I am such a huge music fan that there are soo many bands that made me who I am today, from R&B and Motown to Rock and Roll to Grunge to Heavy Metal with a little old school rap (from the 80's) thrown in..

The older I have become, the more and more I appreciate music that I didn't care for when I was younger.

Growing up, if my Mom was'nt working one of her myriad of jobs, Saturday mornings we were woke up to the radio playing. My Mom loved to sing & dance. She loved country & rock. She also had a soft spot for the blues. I'm a 70's lover, prolly cause its my generation, but, I also love alternative, country, and some of the new 'rock'. Like you, Glenda, Floyd is a huge part of my life even today. (ok, i've shared enough)

I listened to everything from Hard Rock to Motown, Country to Disco, Mariachi to Rap, Metal to Soft Pop. I made me a open to all kinds of music and other things in life and showed me that if I can accept all different things then I can choose what I want in my life.

For the most part, I enjoy music from every decade of my life. I listen to different music for different reasons, depending on my mood and what I'm doing while listening to it.   For cleaning it's more Hip Hop and R&B ,  When I'm down I like Bruno Mars  cuz he's so cute and cracks me up especially The Lazy Song.. That video is off the wall funny.  For bubble baths, soft quiet stuff like James Taylor. When I'm driving it's mostly Hip Hop because I want my bass to drown out the next drivers bass... To sum this up, I love all kinds of music except Classical or Opera...they put me to sleep..

I grew up listening to a lot of old school R&B, jazz, and soft rock (rap came in 93 but still not very much in the house)..... I think it helped my appreciation of music in general, and I'm fairly certain it kept me from burning the house down a few times.

Luke & the 2Live Crew...not really well, they don't have "a chapter, but they do get "a page"...
I grew up liking all kinds of music, but if I was running the record player (ask your parents) I played funk, classic rock, or reggae

I like most kinds of music-growing up in the late 60's, Mom and Dad would have the radio on in the kitchen....listening to WABC radio in NY....Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, Cousin Bruce, Johnny Donovan were the DJ's...songs by groups like Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, Aquarius, Blood Sweat and Tears, Freda Payne, Simon and Garfunkel.  In the 70's, I continued to listen to WABC music radio-lots of different artists.  In the 80's, I was in college and worked at the radio station...2 shows a week...got a REAL appreciation for the classic rock.  To this day, I still love the early to mid 80's music.  Just today, I was listening to the classic rock station which played The Cars "Let's Go"...of course, sunroof was open and I BLASTED the song....Music makes the world go round...
