Well, it's certainly not the Cubs. Sorry, I just had to get that in there.

Eric has a valid point, Pirates are a bit of a surprise. The last couple of years I've watched them develop some young talent especially in pitching. For the sake of Pirates fans, I hope they don't unload the players after they start playing well.

Washington and Baltimore are huge surprises, but I think Washington has the personnel to stay in the hunt. I believe wheels will come off in a few weeks for Baltimore. I hope not, I like pulling for the underdogs and Cinderella stories.

You know, like where a team makes it to the playoffs in a low seed and commences to open a large can of major whoop-arse on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seeds in their conference, then goes on to beat a jerk coaster team who was supposed to kick the OMG team's butt. Yes, I love those kind of things...

Good luck to Washington, Baltimore and the Pirates. Go Braves.

Honestly I think it's the Pirates to me. They are staying steady and winning games

i hate to say it.........the WHITE SUX......new manager and werent expected to do much................And they are leading their division........so far.............

Who in their right mind felt the Dodgers would be playing the best best baseball after 2 1/2 months?  that's by far the biggest surprise and a real head scratcher....

On a good note - I'd say a tie between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, followed by Washington

On the wrong side, I'd say Philadelphia!  Even though Howard and Utley were out to start the season, I thought they would have a much better record than 31-34, especially with that Pitching staff.

I agree about the Pirates. They have been practically non-existant for awhile now. But this year, they are looking pretty good, pretty good... Yep

I figured they'd be up there. They have one of the better starting rotations in the NL.

Then you are a much better evaluator of talent than me...   I saw them as having one stud starter and 4 mediocre at best starters.

For me its the White Sox, i thought they'd be cellar dwellers and they have done great, as for the Pirates, I disagree about them being a surprise.  There has been a buzz about them since last season (prior to their collapse)....they have great starting pitching and any offense is just a bonus.  I expected them to be above .500 this year and it looks promising, but its early.  My other surprise is the Dodgers.  They are still at the top even with All-World Kemp hurting.  Although Matt seems to have no problem appearing on Jimmy Kimmel and the cover of ESPN the mag.

***the Nats made great off season movies, they were listed as a favorite to open the season.....the Orioles are a surprise because they haven't dropped down yet.  The Yankees will blow past them by next week

I still can't figure out how the WSOX were picked to be near the bottom?  I mean, even with the baseball writers?

They have a decent offense......the question was whether or not Rios and Dunn were going to return to form after a horrible season last year.

Their pitching - besides losing Buehrle, their starting rotation was still pretty good going into the season with Floyd and Danks. Sale has been a huge surprise and so has that bullpen.

I guess I'm surprised they're in 1st, considering all of the talent that Detroit has, but I predicted them finishing 2nd or 3rd in that division before the year started. So, i'm not that surprised.

For me the Pirates are just a bit of a surprise because they played well for the early part of last season also so for me wasn't that long of a shot that they could repeat that , NOW  can they hold on is the question. Much like last season its a marathon and not a sprint and for me i still kind of question if their SPing can hold up and keep them in it for rest of the way. They are a decent offensive team but there  lineup does have a couple clear gaps so they need to pitch very consistently to stay away from the kind of losing streaks that can take a team out of the running and kill its confidence.

I think Baltimore is the bigger surprise over Washington so far. I look at Baltimore and they have the offensive talent to be a pretty good team although they do strike out a bit too much, but the major question is can there pitching keep them in it much longer kind of like pittsburgh , for me their staff is a bit of smoke and mirrors and im not sure they can hold on into the second half , those bats will need to stay real productive and likely carry them if they are to stay in the hunt.

Washington for me is the team who can stay in the hunt the rest of way out of these three and is not nearly as much of a surprise. They have a solid rotation and some talent in the bullpen even with some injuries. As they get back a couple of the guys injured early on mixed with the infusion of young talent like Harper they may just have enough to make some noise down the stretch.

When I first saw Sale pitch I had him pegged as one of the top pitchers in the game when he matures. The only thing I've been surprised about with him is that he hasn't needed Tommy John surgery yet. (He will). The surprise for me with the Sox pitching has been how bad Danks and Floyd have been.

As a person that doesn't actually watch baseball, I am amazed at just how many games these guys play.

Not really seeing the Pittsburgh love. They were just swept by the Orioles, and are now just 2 games above .500 with a run differential of -31. Their offense outside of McCutchen is beyond terrible. Regression is very very likely.

Called me biased, but I'm not sure how the biggest surprise isn't Baltimore. Remember before the season, most AL East previews were all about the Yankees, Rays, and Red Sox, while the Blue Jays were at least called frisky. The Orioles? Complete afterthought. Hell, I predicted they'd lose over 100. Now they sit 36-26 and would host the wild card game right now. Now, there are a lot of red flags that point to it being unsustainable (their run differential was negative too before the Pirates sweep), but for now, this is completely unexpected. It was at least consider possible the Nationals could be this good, and that Pittsburgh could conceivably be .500. Not so with the Orioles.

I thought they'd be at the bottom, then again I put Cleveland and Detroit above them and KC....had about even keel with the Twins
