I'm down with the new playoff system, but there's always gonna be team or teams biatching and moaning about not making it.  Just keep the historical bowls in place and get rid of the rest of the nonsense....Little Ceasars and Alamo Bowls....come on now.
#2 | 308 days ago

Ya need a playoff!! For the players to be sitting around for 3-5 weeks waiting for the bowls is ridiculous.  I favor a 16 team tournament as opposed to what they're proposing, but anything is better than what they have.

Still think it should be done like the basketball....still make the money off the "Bowls" and have a true champ.

I think that a 16-team tournament would work better, with the quarterfinals and semifinals as the classic bowl games.

That's true...  That's a huge part of the reason I find bowl games 100% worthless.  They are just payouts for the programs.  I mean, does anyone really care who wins the Humanitarian Bowl?
#9 | 307 days ago

Every level of football has a playoff except D-1. This is a start and it will probably expand from here just like the basketball tourney did and you can still have all the crappy bowls that reward mediocre teams.

Overkill?  Must be the reason it's arguably the most popular sporting event not named the Super Bowl.

I think a four team playoff system is a good start.  I hope it eventually moves towards an eight team playoff, but I'm happy with the powers that be finally realizing how much better a tournament will be than allowing computers to essentially pick the two teams that play for it all.  I mean every other division in CFB has a playoff system.  It's only right that D1 has one too.  As Joe alluded to, there will always be 1-2 teams complaining about being left in the cold, but again - it's a good start.  I'm sure the changes that will inevitably be made in the future will only make it better as well.

Joe, the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl is great.  Purdue got lucky as hell against my Broncos this year, but it's cheap and you can stuff your face with Hot n Readys for basically nothing.  Plus I saw Randy Moss play in it years ago (when it had a different name).  But I know what you mean...there are WAY too many bowl games.  Sorry, but a 6-6 team shouldn't be rewarded.  At least make bowl eligible teams have a winning record.  Is that so hard?

Popularity doesn't make something worth while.  In some cases that popularity can lead to some very bad things.

Think about it...  Does any college team higher than #25 have a chance in hell of winning it all?  No.  They don't.  32 is more than enough for college basketball.  Hell, 16 is really all they need.

I said before that the 4 team field will eventually get widened anyway.  And yes, there will always be teams on the bubble.  But there is a huge difference between bubble teams for #68 whining about missing out and bubble teams for #4.   4 teams just is not enough for American college football.  I hear teams whining and moaning about not being in the basketball field of sixty-whatever it is.  Just wait until the 4 teams for the football playoff are announced...  Those bubble teams will have legit beefs.

The NCAA HAS to know this.  I don't know why they feel they need to start with 4 when everyone knows it's going to get to probably 16 eventually anyway.  Why not just start there?

Something would be better than what is going on now.If you listen to the tv broad casters during the season they seem to have a inside track who will play for the championship.Even after the first two games so dose any body see a problem here.Any team can beat any team on a give in day.So yes i vote for a playoff .Even if it the top four teams how you pick those teams ??

Maybe not for you, but there's a reason millions upon millions of people skip work the first few days of the tourney and productivity in the workplace takes a nosedive in March.

Think about it...  Does any college team higher than #25 have a chance in hell of winning it all?  No.

Actually, yes, they absolutely do.  See Villanova as a #8 seed in 1985.  Then you have teams like George Mason (2006 - 11 seed) and LSU (1986 - 11 seed) making amazing runs to the Final Four.  Sure, they didn't win, but it made the tourneys very exciting.  You also have to keep in mind it's about upsets.  Sports fans love upsets, especially their "bracket busters."

You're in the minority by saying the NCAA tournament is too big.  People love college basketball.  Although the play-in games may be a tad much, it's still one of the most watched and attended sporting events in the world.  Speaking of college, you just got taken to school....again.

LOL @ you.

Using Villanova does not support your point.  A #8 seed is still in the upper half of the field.  Therefore cutting the field in half would not have eliminated them.  GM and LSU getting lucky and winning a couple of games doesn't mean they deserved to be in the field.  You said yourself.  They didn't win.  There was no way in hell a team like that will EVER win.  The overly huge field in the college basketball tournament is comparable to mediocre college football teams playing in meaningless bowl games.  They are only there for a payout and nothing more.

Saying the NCAA college basketball tournament is "one of most watched and attended sporting events in the world" is only true if your definition of "one of" goes beyond 10 or even 20.  It is a popular event, yes.   But nowhere near the level you are suggesting.  You need to keep things in perspective.  Just because you love something to death doesn't mean the entire country loves it as much as you do.  It would be nice if you could cite something to suggest that productivity in this country drops considerably in March.  I sure haven't seen it anywhere I've ever worked.  Some people talk about the tournament.  But no one skips on work for it.
Further...  No one seems to even know college basketball even exists until that tournament anyway.

Villanova was the worst of the #8 seeds that year.  That made them the #32 team in the land, thus making your piddly argument invalid.

Except for those first round games when a 15 beats a 2.  That's not anything like a team from the GFY.com Bowl beating a team from a BCS Bowl.

Does that make sense, saddlebags?

I sure haven't seen it anywhere I've ever worked.

That's because you probably work all by yourself, know-it-all.

No one seems to even know college basketball even exists until that tournament anyway.

Maybe not in your neck of the woods, but on the East Coast and Midwest, it's huge.  Guess where a large percentage of the populations resides?  And if UCLA ever gets good again, SoCal will be just as bball crazy.

This is for you.

Nothing can help me care about soccer. Oh, 'it's the most popular sport in the world.' Probably because it's cheap to play. It costs a ball. Once every four years, America pretends to care about it. And yes, I call it 'soccer.' Don't correct me because I don't care what they call it in other lands ? I speak America.

Sorry world, we already have football and it's way better. It's supposed to be played by 300 pound men eight seconds at a time, not five-foot, six-inch fairies lightly jogging for three hours, or however long your game is…buy a scoreboard!

It's hard for me to get into a sport that I mastered at the age of seven. Excuse me for not being able to get revved up for this corner kick that never works. Hooray! The game ends without a single goal. I want to kill myself when an NBA team doesn't break a hundred. That's because you don't get a free taco.

Maybe there would be more scoring if they weren't flopping all of the time. And hooligans, instead of killing players that screwed up, murder the ones that fall down crying because their toe got stepped on.

The only good thing about soccer is the movie "Ladybugs." That's a classic. Don't try to re-do it, Hollywood. I love women's soccer. It's a beautiful game, and America is actually good at it. Probably because we're the only country that allows women to wear shorts.

It's nice to have an activity that terrorist countries can excel at. Enjoy your 15 minutes, Algeria. Then go back to being number one at car bombs. But just know that the only reason you're beating us is because our best athletes are busy playing real sports. You think LeBron James might make an okay goalie? Oh, and good move, giving us Beckham ten years past his prime. That really panned out.

# 8 still puts them in the upper half.  Meaning the field could be cut in half and the final result would not be affected in any way shape or form.  Not only that, it's very possible that even if the field were smaller than 32 Villanova STILL would have been invited to play.  Besides, that ONE instance is the ONLY thing people like you who love that tournament can hang their hat on.

And does that #15 ever go anywhere after that upset?  No.  Hence, it was a meaningless win on par with winning the Weedeater Bowl.

College basketball is only "huge" in VERY isolated pockets like Bloomington, Lexington or parts of North Carolina.  Not exactly the high population centers you mention.  People there may care in January but no one else does until March.  Even in Los Angeles.

That little anti football tirade had nothing to do with the discussion and including it merely demonstrated pettiness on your part.

Capiche?

Basketball more than any other sport is about matchups.  The #2 seed that loses in the first round was capable of winning it all.  They just caught the wrong team on the wrong night.  Either team from the GFY.com bowl would not be capable of beating a BCS caliber team.

Good God you're an imbecile.

No, you didn't prove anything except for your own pettiness.  Being a #8 seed in a bracket does not mean a team was outside the top 25.  You know very well the brackets do not directly relate to actual overall rankings.  Either that, or you aren't the college basketball fan you present yourself to be.

Basketball does not have a monopoly on matchups having a bearing on the outcome of tournaments.  Any team is capable of catching a superior team on a "wrong night".    Watch.  It will happen in the forthcoming NCAA football playoff as well.

The mere fact that you are throwing out insults and unrelated tripe only goes to show how week your position is and the quality of your character.

Good day.

I`m not sure how the playoffs should be run but if a player isn`t a straight eh student they shouldn`t be allowed to play in the playoffs.smiley
