Calling all Libtards - Game On
Hello, Lib-tards. Events have kept me from starting another go around of this, but now it's clear we need one. A running mate to Romney has been picked. Most (if not all) of the primaries for Congressional races have been completed. Election 2012 is on.

Please remember that all opinions are welcome, but this poll is geared towards the liberals here. So it can and often gets heated, so if you can't take the heat stay out of the poll. And let's all remember the CoC. Basically, don't be like our politicians, but disagree without being disagreeable.

As a Wisconsinite, I've been ashamed of Paul Ryan for quite some time. Now, beyond ashamed. Paul Ryan is a joke.

I'm awaiting the first person in the media to ask a Romney surrogate what's so bold about picking a hard line ideologue as your running mate.  Or, whats so bold about a hardline far right budget? That's easy.  There's nothing difficult about going straight ideology.  That's easy.  Bold is challenging your own opinions, and Paul Ryan has never ever once done that.

Also, waiting for the first person in the media to point out to Paul Ryan that he's responsible for a gigantic part of the deficit he's railing against. To go back to the bold point, what's bold about railing against a problem you're responsible for?

To sum up my thoughts on Paul Ryan, if he were Paulina Ryan instead of Paul Ryan, he'd be a national joke.

The media loves Paul Ryan. They think he's a principled conservative. They think he will make this a "serious" campaign about "serious" issues (yep, that's really happened). Chuck Todd, David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell, et al have been going gaga since this leaked on Friday. Liberal media my ass.

Luckily, Ezra Klein (I know, I'm a fanboy, but here me out) has been on fire pointing out the issues in both Romney and Ryan's budget plans, which an assist from the Tax Policy Center. In summary:
  • Romney's tax plan? Mathematically impossible
  • Romney's budget? Fantasy (you can't cut spending to 20% of GDP while keeping defense at 4% and have it make sense without catastrophic cuts)
  • Ryan's budget? Not much better in terms of the severity of the cuts (but yes, it's actually less radical in a way than Romney)
  • Of course, what Romney says he will cut is a mere drop in the bucket
  • Those $716 billion in Medicare cuts they're harping Obama on? It's a true statement, but Ryan's budget keeps those cuts
Unrelated to this, but relevant to the conservation is this Brookings study that shows that if state and local government hadn't had to layoff so many people, unemployment would be down to 7.1%. Yet somehow the narrative is Obama is an out of control big government liberal.

Finally, I can't recommend enough Charlie Pierce's blog at Esquire.

Few questions based on rumors I've kinda heard but haven't had the desire to research yet...

1. Paul Ryan is 32? I've seen him. I don't like his face... or his age if it's 32.
2. The republicans are running a mormon and an atheist (or a catholic who loves an atheist) (so confused)? The same republicans that think the current president is a muslim and should be in africa? Is this legal?
3. Can you be an atheist vice president in america? Aren't presidents (and/or vice) required to say GOD bless America at least 20x a term? What is he going to say during a crisis that will appease the masses and the south?! Do they not say so help me god at the end of the oath? (even if he's not an atheist, I want these answers)

Thanks.

In the above interview, PR says he is a Christian.

Of course, his explanation is wonky.

I'm switching it up a little because something irritated me last night.

Last night I was relaxing after a long day putting a freak'n photo book together when the news came on. First story was about Obama's Immigration policy and the long lines of undocumented people who were in this country as kids who had no papers. They were finally being able to file for papers. SOMETHING I believe is great. This is their country. They pay taxes (we pay taxes on most items we purchase.....that income tax bullsh*t pisses me off......EVERYONE pays taxes), have served this country in the military, etc........yet were in a dark......because they had no papers, and now they finally get them. This isn't what irritated me. What irritated me was the 5 or 10 people protesting this. Literally.....that is how many it looked like there were. BAsically they wanted these "undocumented" people to go back to their own country and fix their country. Didn't seem to matter that most of these people came here as young children. THIS is their only country. I was literally yelling at my television and was surprised my neighbors didn't call for help. Ugly Americans like them piss me off and make me want to kick someone.

It just angers me all over typing just this little bit. UGH. People make me sick.

well sh-t....ya must've missed this cause the cussing at the TV would've continued. laughsurprise

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday ordered state agencies to deny driver's licenses and other public benefits to young illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations under a new Obama administration policy.

In an executive order, Brewer said she was reaffirming the intent of current Arizona law denying taxpayer-funded public benefits and state identification to illegal immigrants.

Young illegal immigrants around the nation on Wednesday began the process of applying for federal work permits under the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

The federal policy defers deportations for that group if they meet certain criteria, including arrival in the United States before they turned 16 and no convictions for certain crimes.

After President Barack Obama announced the policy change in June, Brewer labeled it "backdoor amnesty" and political pandering by the Democratic president.

Arizona has been in the vanguard of states enacting laws against illegal immigration.

The U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned parts of the Arizona enforcement law known as SB1070 but ruled that a key provision on requiring police to ask people about their immigration status under certain circumstances can be implemented.

The Obama administration challenged that law in 2010 after Brewer signed it into law.

In the past decade, Arizona voters twice approved laws denying publicly funded services, such as in-state resident university tuition rates, to illegal immigrants unless mandated by the federal government.

Brewer's order said the policy's federal paperwork doesn't confer lawful status on illegal immigrants and won't entitle them to Arizona public benefits.

All Paul Ryan is going to do is make Obama look that much better for the women voters, the hispanic voters, and the senior citizen voters because his economic plan does nothing but attack those groups. If Paul Ryan has his way, senior citizens will be going back to eating:

and it would have to be the wet food because Ryan will do away with Obama's health care plan (which, ironically, is based on ROMNEY'S MASSACHUSETTES HEALTH CARE PLAN), so that means the senior citizens will not be able to get dentures to eat the dry dog and cat food because it will hurt their gums.  Plus, we will have an explosion of pregnant teens and pre-teens (even worse than we have now) since they will be trying to eliminate the women's right to have an abortion, by allowing right wing lunatics to do more of this:

 (actual Planned Parenthood Clinic Photo)

But what do you expect from a party that aligns itself with the religious Right (although they are actually 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999%  Religious Wrong ), where they bash homosexuality and gay marriage and yet many Republican Senators and Congressmen in the last 10 years have had to resign for having gay sex with altar boys, male Congressional Pages or, in the case of the Senator from Nebraka, gay sex in a North Dakota PUBLIC Bathroom.  Which explains why they are so adamant about legislating the female vagina--they don't know what it is, and they are terrified of anything and everything that they don't have a clue about.

So, some of you may have known that Scott Walker's Milwaukee County Executive administration (his previous job) was under investigation and it seem(ed/s) that Walker himself was too. Now, his current administration is also being investigated.  Not sure why this isn't getting bigger play.  Personally, I think its big news when any sitting governor is being investigated, but especially when he is a national player.

I was about to point out how Ohio Republicans weren't even trying to conceal their attempts to steal the election, as they were trying to make it so early voting hours were longer in Republican areas than Democratic. But, lo and behold, the Secretary of State actually did the right thing and made the early voting hours uniform for everyone. The question now is will it actually be *enforced* uniformally.

So today my ire goes towards the Obama administration, for decided that nope, no need to prosecute anyone regarding the MF Global mess. In fact, the firm's fearless leader, the piece of garbage Jon Corzine, is all ready to go back and start another hedge fund! How fine and dandy!

The failure to hold anyone on Wall Street accountable for what happened is easily the biggest failure of the Obama presidency.

1. Ryan is 42.
2. Ryan is a Catholic (I guess), but until recently was more known as an Ayn Rand disciple. The most famous story is that he would require staff members to read Atlas Shrugged. Recently those he's tried to distant himself was Rand. Not because he realized Objectivism is merely the philosophy of being a selfish pr***, but because of Rand's atheism.
3. No clue, and since there's no way an out atheist could get elected in this country (according to polls, they're more hated than Muslims or Wiccans), it will remain a mystery. There goes my chance of becoming President or VP.

so u're saying the US Marines are comprised of 35% undocumented Mexicans.  That's complete BS dude....where did ya get those stats?????

I found this which is from a reliable site:

Hispanics (sometimes also referred to as "Latinos"[4]) in the Marine Corps account for the largest minority group of that military institution. Hispanics comprise 18% of enlisted Marines today

back to the point of the discussion, if they served this country I have no problem with them getting "amnesty" BUT we're talking about a minuscule portion of the illegals in the this country.  So there's no need to go off on these ridiculous tangents.

Good to know you are using a reliable and up to date source, like Mind of Mencia(been off the air for 5+ years), for your information. Do you get your updates on  race relations from All in the Family too?

Paul Ryan is already double talking, for instance in his interview with Brit Hume. The man is the epitome of all our equal as long as you are like me.  What scares me most is people who are hurting financially the most are the ones that voices are going to not be heard under a Romney Ryan presidency.

I am seeing this commercial here lately that says "Obama hasn't done anything for this country."  Well here's an interesting fact, this current Congress has passed the least amount of bills since WWII.  Even the one Truman called the "do nothing Congress" passed more laws than this current one.  Why is that?  Gee, could it be because both parties automatically shoot down the other party's ideas because of party lines?  It sure seems that way.  Oh, and saying the healthcare law is so bad, STFU!  Prison inmates come to the hospital and get medical treatment (I've transported convicts before), so why the hell is it such a bad idea to make sure the rest of America gets the care they need?  The poor that can't afford medical insurance get thrown to the curb, but we pay for the convicts to get the proper medical treatment?!  Something is drastically wrong with that picture!  Take the HMOs and the "pre-existing conditions" and shove them where the sun don't shine!  I'm sick and tired of all the Republicans bashing Obama for a failure when they are responsible for the mess because have blocked every single thing he's tried to do simply because he's a Democrat.  I've never seen our 2 political parties this divided, and it's disgusting.

You've reminded me of what I wanted to ask the rest of you. What is the ad situation been in your states, particularly if you're in a swing state? I've seen a decent amount of Obama ads (DC market gets it due to Virginia), especially when the America the Beautiful ad was running. It hasn't been anything close though to the onslaught of ads from the Romney campaign, the RNC, and the various SuperPACS (usually Rove's or the Koch brothers).

I wanted earplugs with that America the Beautiful commercial.  I wanted to say to the TV "don't quit your day job," but he's just as crappy at that.

I actually was going to keep a count of ads.  It's ridiculous.  Virtually no other commercials.  So thankful for the DVR.

One of the good things about being in a state whose Presidential election results are a foregone conclusion is there isn't much national campaigning done here.  No ads on the local TV.  No local radio spots.  No billboards.  The only ad I have seen lately was a national ad on a national broadcast that pretty much only wanted to remind us that Romney has amassed personal wealth.

Haven't watched much TV in the past month and a half, but when I do its mostly Romney or a SuperPAC.  See an Obama ad every once in a while.  It'll be interesting to see if there is any change given some conservatives think they can win WI now.

I like how whenever a conservative says something that even further reinforces the horrible rape culture we have in the country where we pretend rape victims are asking for it, its a "distraction" or all politicians say something stupid.  Ask the rape victims that are afraid to come forward because the shaming they'll recieve if its a distraction.

Also, holy motherf*** most of our politicians could pass a middle school biology class. Not Rep. Akin.

I know of multiple people who have been raped and did not feel comfortable enough to go to the authorities.  One of them, who I dated for a while, was never able to fully rationalize (because really who could?) what happened and ended up committing suicide this spring. The part about :"what country" was a little.  But the last time I checked rape was still considered a very serious thing around here.  No one I know or heard of has anything close to the caviler attitude towards it that was suggested earlier.

This might be one of the better articles I've seen written about the rape culture in this country.

Todd Akin reinforced this with his "legitimate rape" comments.  The House GOP and (sadly) 10 or so Democrats reinforced with their "forcible rape" legislation.  This stuff matters.  It ends in more rapes without consequence.

It's unfortunate that those you know were not comfortable going to authorities.  It truly is.  That does not change the fact that rape in the USA is considered an exceptionally heinous crime.  That is still the reality.   A reality I would think you would share considering the sad fate of one you mentioned.  Not sure why you would disagree and take such a caviler attitude towards such a terrible thing.

Don't want to go down this path any further.  It's the opposite of fun.

You see things in your own warped way.  The fact is I never turned any knife on anyone.  I said cavalier because I was arguing that rape is considered a very serious crime and he was claiming it wasn't.

Go direct your sickness in the appropriate direction, please.  Not the person talking about how grave an act it is.

It's funny how the "everybody does it" defense pops up whenever a person can't find a valid defense of the mess they are supporting. It's like watching children. Sometimes, the people you support f*** up, don't justify it with that dismissive mess. If it was reversed, you'd be on the attack. Just admit they were wrong, and move on. It happens to everyone. You can disagree with someone and still support them in general.... UNLESS the reason you don't acknowledge the faux pas is because you agree with it... then ignore all of this.

You Sir, live in a rose colored world.  Do you have personal knowledge of someone that has been raped? Rape victims are subjected to so much bullsh!t once the crime is reported and IF it goes to trial, usually the guilty party gets a time served or probation. You know nothing of this heinous crime and live in a world far removed from ours.  We do not live in a Law and Order episode.

I just want to know when I said it wasn't serious? I said many victims face a backlash when they report it, which leads other victims to decide the process isn't worth it. That's our rape culture. Read the link I posted.  It shows perfectly what I'm getting at.

Sh**... those are the saddest episodes of SVU...where they can't put a rapist in jail because the statute of limitations runs out, or you realize that a person might get more time for drug related charges than someone who has committed a sexual assault. That's tv, but the sh** happens IRL every single day.

We all agree rape is horrible. Those of us that have dealt with it firsthand, know it is not easily punishable. It's your attitude that if someone gets raped, they can go to the police, the police catch the rapist, and he goes to jail. Before I read all this, the "everybody does it" thing was going to be my rant of the day (I had peeked in this thread at work before this all started). Now, I'll hold off.

I never said that or inferred that.  It is a complete fabrication. I have no idea how you determined that.  I was only countering the comment that claimed our society does not see rape as a terrible thing.

Perhaps making things up like this is just you being you?

You need to reevaluate.  I'm not the one using the "straw man" argument here.

To recap...  All I did was claim that in the USA rape is considered a terrible act.  Period.  And I got blasted for that.  No biggie.  I should expect it.  I just didn't expect it for THAT.

And when did I, or anyone else in this thread, say it wasn't? You got blasted because you don't have any understanding of the enormous difficulty rape victims face when they hope to seek justice.  Also, because you vaguely defended Akin's comments as just being another instance of politicians saying stupid things when it has a real life effect that he's even attempted to legislate. But go on, pretend you got ganged up on for saying that rape is bad.

I fortunately haven't known anyone that was personally raped.  However, I do know that it's like the number of flu cases every winter, for every case reported, there are hundreds that DON'T get reported.  There is a reason for that, right?  I didn't see anyone in this thread ever say that it wasn't a serious crime.  Reading comprehension can sometimes go a long way.

And when did I, or anyone else in this thread, say it wasn't? But go on, pretend you got ganged up on for saying that rape is bad.
You claimed that this country does not see rape as a serious crime in post #80.  All I did was disagree by saying that it is very much seen as an incredibly serious crime.  This is quite obvious and there really shouldn't be any need to restate it.  By saying that it is reasonable to infer that I very much do understand physical and emotional toll that goes with the victims even though I never actually directly addressed that aspect.  Others made that bogus connection.  Those who went there did so with ZERO provocation from anything I wrote.  To say I even "vaguely" defended such monumentally stupid comments is a HUGE leap.  How is it even slightly condoning what he said by adding that all politicians blurt out really stupid things?  It's not even close.  Only if one is going out of one's way to be difficult would one even go that route.

Not that those facts will change what you are thinking, however....    I'm sure you will just disregard everything that disputes your take on the matter.  I'd love to be proved wrong on that one....

Post #75 you said "Politicians say a lot of stupid things" when the thread turned to Akin. Maybe that was poor timing on your part, but it HEAVILY insinuates you thought Akin's comments were just stupid.

And where in post #80 do I say its not serious. For goodness sake, I lost an ex to rape and my best friend has been raped. While my best friend has been amazingly strong and has done so well for herself, I still see moments where she's clearly being traumatized by her past. WHY WOULDN'T I THINK IT'S SERIOUS?

I've tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, because I think it raises the level of debate.  However, you've proven you don't deserve that.  I don't know why you've taken the position you have in this thread, but regardless, it is wrong and offensive.  I hope you wake up and realize we have an awful culture of rape in this country where we often blame the victim (usually, a woman) and let the felon off.  This has had extensive and painful consequences.  I pray you never personally feel them.

Yes, I did say "Politicians say a lot of stupid things" when you mentioned a politician saying something stupid.  And even provided a link to another politician saying something stupid.  This was not poor but rather proper timing.

You ask where in post 80?  It's right there, dude!  Here it is again...  "...further reinforces the horrible rape culture we have in the country..."   All I did was disagree.  That rape is actually seen as a horrid crime in this country.   Stop patting yourself on the back.  You never dished out any benefit of doubt here.  You made bogus assumptions and ludicrous leaps of logic.  I have taken the position I have because I, along with most in this country I believe, take rape as a terrible and serious crime and don't like it when someone infers that this nation as a whole does not.   Contrary to your perspective, such a view is not wrong and is the complete opposite of offensive.   Had you not done so, I would never have thought anyone would find the idea that rape is considered a terrible crime as offensive.

You have no evidence whatsoever to conclude what my history may or may not be with the crime.  The conclusions you have drawn have all been completely speculative and none are supported by anything I have said in the thread.

And finally, once again you have proved that you will not understand what was said here.  You have your take and the facts aren't going to change it.  You go right on thinking this country takes rape very lightly.  It's wrong but in your mind you are always right.

Again, you still haven't proven I said rape wasn't serious. We do have a rape culture. 1 in 4 women on a college campus will be raped. That's a culture. When you have to worry that sending your daughter to an institution of higher learning will put her at a great risk of rape? That's a culture. Don't tell me that doesn't think I take rape serious.  I just repeated reality towards you, and you decided you disagreed with it.

And trust me, I've given you a sh*t ton of the benefit of the doubt.

I pointed out what caused the disagreement to begin with.   You haven't pointed out where I belittled victims of rape.  What you described is hardly a "culture".

You haven't given me any benefit of doubt whatsoever.  If you had, you would have been open to the explanations given.  You haven't been.  You have been arrogant and defensive and have even made crap up.  And believe you me...  If anyone has been giving the benefit of the doubt it has been me to you.  I do that as a courtesy to all I converse with.  Even those who haven't earned it.

Just out of curiousity, what have I made up?

And you belittled victims of rape when you insinuated Rep. Akin's comments was just another gaffe, nevermind that he legislated the same thing (but maybe you didn't know he had [hey, benefit of the doubt]).

You also belittled rape victims when you said that those of us offended by your comments not recognizing rape isn't something easily reported were being cavalier.  My attitude towards rape is anything but cavalier.  I've put out there my relationships with rape victims. You don't have to, and I don't want you to if you aren't comfortable with doing so. But at least understand that if you have relationships with it and don't want to come forward with them for whatever reason, all of them justified, that's due to our culture of rape, where we blame victims and have victims terrified to come forward.
#114 | 303 days ago

You made up the following... "you don't have any understanding of the enormous difficulty rape victims face when they hope to seek justice."   You also made up me belittling rape victims.  You made up me claiming that your politician's comments were a mere gaffe rather than just plain stupidity.  (Even though that is exactly what I called it...  Funny how that was missed).

I never said anything about rape being a crime not being easily reported.  How can one be offended by something that was never uttered?  That was made up by you.

Not feeling OK to come forward being a "culture" is a ridiculous absolute.  It has nothing to do with the culture.  There are a ton of factors that go into that.  Culture not being among them.  I don't see anyone blaming victims here.  In fact, the opposite has been true.  The only ones who ever try to blame the victims are the perpetrators and scumbag lawyers trying to get their clients off.  Not society at all.

I could go on but don't feel it will open your eyes at all anyway.

This isn't at all what I originally was getting at anyway.  Congrats on taking my comment WAY off topic.  Let's get back to it.

Politicians sure do say a lot of dumb things....

I literally cannot handle your stupidity to the point where I have read your sh*t and slapped myself at how amazingly f***ing stupid it is. And no, I did not make that up, though I wish I did.

And yes, I will be condescending as hell in this post because sometimes people are so f***ing stupid, they f***ing earned it. So congrats, you're really f***ing stupid. You ignorant peice of s***, ass****.

You've never shown any understanding of the difficulty rape victims have faced. You belittled it as a gaffe in post #75, post #77 where you pretend its really f***ing easy to just go report it and it will all be solved, post #84 where you claim a rape victim is cavalier about rape, post #87 where you belittle me, while I haven't been raped have seen and felt the extraordinary consequences of rape, in post #89 where you call a rape victim's point of view "warped", in post #96 where you call a rape victim "ornery", and in post #110 you reinforced the idea that Akin's comments were just a gaffe.

You also deny the absolute culture I proved in my post #86, which shows why victims of rape are terrified to come forward. Again, go read it. Its fascinating in the most awful way possible.

You could go on and on and on and on, and you're right, it woudn't change my opinion. That's because you're a f***ing ignorant peice of s***. You can go f*** off for all I care.

I know your response will be to my vulgarness, and you'll feel like you won, and that's fine.  But the fact of the matter is you are a rape apologist.  And that offends every fiber of my being.

Politicians may say a lot of dumb things, but not nearly as much as YOU.

Repeating the same bogus garbage doesn't change anything.  You know you made that crap up.  You know I never said it.  I never brought up the difficulty rape victims endure.  You did.  I never even broached the subject.  I never called what was said a "gaffe".  I said it was "stupid."   It's right there in post #75.  I didn't even write post #77.  And I never claimed it was easy to report and I never claimed life was like a TV show where all crimes get solved.  Again, I never went there.  Ever.  You and others did.   I never claimed rape victims are cavalier about the crime.  You just made that crap up.  In post 87 I didn't belittle you at all.  I sympathized with your past association with the crime and was confused by what appeared to be a cavalier attitude towards it.  Instead of explaining yourself you just went on and make more weak comments and patted yourself on the back about what a great person you were for doing so.  In post 89 I never said rape victims point of view as warped.  I said your view of acceptance of rape as being a cultural thing was warped!  In post 96 I didn't call rape victims ornery.  I suggested that those who were arguing the idea that rape is not a serious crime are probably doing so because they are just being ornery.  And in post 110 I reinforced that the original comment was stupid.  You pulled the word "gaffe" out from God knows where.  I never used it.

But the fact of the matter is you are a rape apologist.

This is so monumentally stupid...  Rape apologist?  There's a new one.   I'm kicking myself for this but I have to ask...  How does thinking rape is an awful awful crime make me a rape apologist?  That's the only fact I really presented here.  I can't wait to hear that answer...

Well, things have calmed down finally, so it's time to pour more gasoline on the fire (hey, it's my thread, I can do what I want wink)

So let's turn the rant sign on. Today's topic: the "both sides do it" meme. This meme theorizes that Republicans and Democrats are just as bad in terms of rhetoric, dirty tricks, and ineffectiveness. There are two groups of people that most push this. They are:

1.) The Mainstream Media, in their efforts to achieve "balance," because if they don't the right wing will get mad at them (apparently they don't realize the right wing will always, always hate them regardless)
2.) So-called independents (but in reality probably vote straight ticket) who say that to make them feel superior to those who participate in politics

Let's take our most recent example, shown right here in this thread. We'll start with the Joe Biden "chains" comment. Biden was referring to Romney's plan to further deregulate Wall Street, which as we saw in 2008, doesn't end well for regular people. Was it a dumb comment? Yes. Did he stick his foot in his mouth (again)? Unquestionably. To a point, the flack was deserved (and don't say there wasn't any, it was a big story until Akin sucked up all the oxygen) In the end though, the meaning can be fairly easily derived, and as vice president, Biden has no actual governing power.

An as aside, Romney's attacks on the Obama campaign being beyond the pale were ridiculous given he's released a few ads now blatantly lying about welfare.

So, let's move on to the Akin flap. Obviously, his comments were also dumb, especially with its ignorance of how the female reproductive system works. The difference is this wasn't a clumsy misspeak, this is what Akin actually thinks. It's also what most of the men in the Republican party think. At the beginning of this Congress, they voted on HR 3: the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion. Almost every GOP congressman co-sponsored it, and all of them voted for it on the floor of the House. There is no exception for rape or incest in that bill. The original bill mentions the term "forcible rape" as the only exception, whatever "forcible rape" is. That, or "legitimate rape," is the "she was asking for it" defense said another way.

The reason for this designation is that most of the GOP wants all abortion illegal, no exceptions. However, most people believe in rape and incest exceptions. Akin and company though choose to believe in junk science that says a woman can't get pregnant from rape. After all, if that's the case, then there's no need for an abortion exception. The Republicans can try to paint Akin as a lone nut, but his views on this topic are the same as the majority of his fellow party members. No rape or incest exceptions for abortions is part of the Republican platform just approved for the convention, just as they have in some form since 1976.

The overall point here is Biden's comment was dumb but has no effect on policy. Akin's comment was from a member of Congress and a Senate candidate. Akin has power, and he's used it, along with his Republican colleagues, to attempt to put these extreme views into law.

It's like that with the rhetoric out there. Politics is always nasty of course, but where's the liberal equvialent to Sarah Palin? To Rush Limbaugh? To Rick Perry? To Michele Bachmann? To this guy? The answer to all of those is no, and if they exist, they'll influence is nowhere near the influence of most of these people in the conservative movement.

Both sides don't do it, and to the extent that they do, it's obvious which side does it worse.

Demain? I'm assuming that's slang I don't know of, since the dictionary definition of the word didn't fit (especially since it's an obsolete UK word).

So, uh, Mitt Romney is kind of a birther, maybe? Or way too comfortable with birtherism?

The problem is while unions exist for federal employees (but not DoD though), they only have so much power, since Congress and the President set pay and benefits. They primarily exist as lobbying organizations and presumably to represent employees in grievances. Of course, veterans could use a union more than any other federal employee.

I'd think they'd have many grievances, especially in the medical field.  My issue towards veterans isn't so much pay, but rather how we treat them once they return.  I suppose some of that falls into benefits, but these men and women get consistently get screwed over once they return.  A union could give them a strong voice towards earning the rights they deserve.

(Also, I don't think we disagree on this, but wanted to put it out there.)

No, I see your point, and that's what I was trying to get out. Veterans post-deployment is a special case that goes beyond normal retirement benefits. The overall logistical problem remains though that you can't really negotiate with Congress like you do with private employers.

So, they'd have to fall back on lobby powers. Either way, potentially gives them a single strong voice, even if they don't have the advantages of private sector unions.

That's right.  You get to lie and use the straw man all you wish.   God forbid someone does it back at you.  Even when it is done intentionally.

Talk about predictable...   I knew the true point of the post would be missed.

Because pointing out a simple fact (3 men in the past week have done so - Todd Akin, Bryan Fischer, this guy, and others) is definitely a lie and a straw man tactic.  But hey, troll on brah.

I proved with my experiences, Laurel did with hers, and post #86 proved that what these men think has had real life consequences. I never once said everyone thinks it.  I only said it has real life consequences. You still are using straw man techniques.

You said it was the "culture" of this country.  Which means you feel such thinking is the generally accepted attitude nationwide.  And as evidence of that is your personal perceptions, what someone else said is personal perceptions and comments from three people I think we both agree are idiots when it comes to this subject.  Your line of reasoning is flawed because you are using a biased sample when drawing your conclusion.   It's also flawed in that your sample size is nowhere near large enough to conclude it applies to a society of more than 300 million people.

You keep running back to your straw man and it is convincing me you have no idea what the straw man fallacy is.  It's something I have yet to display.  However, you and others have done so in this thread.  Let me enlighten you.  The straw man argument is when someone ignores the person's actual position and substitutes it with a misrepresentation of that position.  In this case, you misrepresented my original position into something I was never discussing to begin with.  Now that I think about it, it wasn't even a misrepresentation.  It was a blatant misdirect.  Things went downhill from there but make no mistake...  It began with you using the straw man fallacy.

Well, let me enlighten you, Mr. EnlightenMcErLightenson.

Culture is the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group, accourding to Dictionary.com

Behaviors is the most relevent part of that definition.  The behavior of our rape culture, is that women are terrified to come to authorities about their experience. That, is a culture. Defend it all you want, its a culture.

As for Straw Men.. you've straw man'd the hell out of a rape victim multiple times, claiming her view was warped, claimed she was ornery, and cavalier. Never did you attempt to actually intellectually debate her ideas, but rather you belittled her and went after straw men.

You have no intellectual standing. Never have, and it appears on this issue, never will.

You straw manned me when you opted to go down the rape path to begin with.  Knowing full well that had nothing to do with my original premise whatsoever.  That premise didn't have anything to do with rape.  Yet down that road you went.

You just straw manned me again here when you claimed I was defending something I wasn't.

I never straw manned any rape victim here.  I've already addressed those bogus accusations you made in an earlier post.  Go reference that.  I'm tired of repeating myself to you as if you are suffering from dementia.
You have your pre-formed conclusions and no facts have are being allowed to get in your way.

You are living in a world of denial, my friend.  But then, most political extremists do.  Many also can't be reasoned with.  So you fit right in.

And finally, you have committed the fallacy of Argumentum ad Hominem.  Not just here but in previous posts as well.

I'm sorry you just so happened to enter the conversation when it turned to rape. Had you never intended to get into a conversation about rape I would've figured that'd be your first response, but what do I know.

You've literally spent your whole time fighting against the idea of this country's culture of rape. TROLL ON.

No, you've literally called a rape victim's veiw "warped" and called her "ornery". Not my words, yours. Live with it.

Also, as a grandson of a dementia victim, f*** you.

I do genuinely enjoy debate. I think it makes things better. However, debates need facts, of which you have none.

Call me whatever you want, but you are the one defending the culture of rape. TROLL ON.

Nice Googling. Yes, I've attacked you. Because you've owned and defended the arguments of rape apologists, and I will always, always, always attack those horrible people.

No, you turned the conversation to rape after I made a non-rape related comment.  Go ahead.  Look at post #75 and find anything in it that has to do with rape.

And when you went down the rape road I followed.  I'll own up to that mistake.  In the course of following you down that path I did not defend your idea of the "rape culture".  I claimed your perception of the "rape culture" was not the reality.  You made it sound like Americans as a group do not see rape as the horrid violent crime it is.  Once again, you got it wrong when it was written as plain as day.

So, are you saying that being sickened by someone because he thinks rape is a vile crime is NOT a warped view.  Nice.  It clashes with what you said earlier however....

Don't be so easily offended.  Man up.  (Or are you just trying to straw man me again?)
My dad has dementia.  I deal with it on a daily basis.  Talking to him is just like arguing with you.  I have to repeat everything.  My dad has an excuse....

I agree that debates are a good thing.  But you don't debate.  You ignore anything that counters your viewpoint.  You make up stuff just so you can make a rebuttal.  You attack when those tactics don't work.  But again, that is typical extremist behavior.  Extremists tend to not like facts that tear down their pre-formed opinions.  Also, debates work when arguments are actually directly addressed.  You don't do that either.  You ignore the responses and keep repeating.  Things just go in circles when you do that.   The debate goes nowhere.

I told you already a number of times (again, it's like talking to my dementia ridden father), I have never defended any rape apologist.  Ever.  That is your imagination running wild because you can't use facts or the words I write against me.  It's hilarious.

I imagine you are just going to repeat yourself and ignore all the facts yet again (You wouldn't be you if you didn't I guess) so why not save yourself the trouble and just cut and paste one of your earlier posts?
