The AFC is struggling

Out of the gate the NFC looks to be the better conference

by Dan_B Dan_B 9/17/122 Comment Comments »
Before the NFL season started, Andrew_Ericksen asked the question, which conference is better, the NFC or the AFC? My gut reaction was to say the AFC (though Andrew's conclusion was that the NFC was stronger). Boy have I been wrong so far.

The AFC is struggling PhotoThrough (almost ) two weeks of football, every NFC team but one, the New Orleans Saints, has a win. Oddly, the Saints were a presumptive favorite in the NFC this season, but are likely still adjusting to the loss of head coach Sean Payton for the season. The Saints have a great chance for their first win next week as they play host to winless, hapless Kansas City Chiefs.

Meanwhile, in the AFC, there are five winless teams. Overall, NFC teams are 18-13 this season, while their counterparts in the AFC are 13-18.

The biggest surprise has to be the NFC West, which just two seasons ago was sending a 7-9 team to the playoffs. This year, the division looks as strong as any in the league. The 49ers may be the best team in football after winning at Lambeau Field Week 1 and manhandling the Lions yesterday. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals are 2-0, including a win on the road at New England. Seattle rolled over Dallas yesterday and St. Louis squeezed out a victory over an improved Washington Redskins squad. All told, that is a solid division.

If the Saints manage to beat the Chiefs next week, it is quite possible that the AFC will have the five remaining 0-3 teams (Kansas City, Jacksonville, Oakland, Tennessee and Cleveland). All five of those teams have been completely punchless in Weeks 1 and 2.

Do you think anything will change in Week 3? Or is it the NFC's year?

Anyone who does a blog and attaches the poll - in this case it was Dan :)
(It shouldn't look weird forever- these outdated poll pages will be pretty in the near future and we'll have them designed to fit when we attach them to a blog better)
