Welcome back. This is the part of the locker room where you can sit and chat and chill for a while without offending or being shushed. Maybe you wanna watch a dvd or listen to your mp3. Yes, I rhymed. Something on your mind, post it! Random question, ask it? Hijacking is allowed and encouraged. Join the party, troll around, have a beer. It's cool. All are welcome, but please leave all BS in the hall.

I'm pretty much in a good mood, but not in the mood for some of this bs I've seen already. So, quick tv notes... MNF was meh. Ugh. Grimm is still very good, if I haven't said so. Major Closer had a good first season. I loved the finale. Alphas is the t**ts. I'll start American Horror Story tonight.

I need to have $381 until further notice if someone would like to donate.

Drank.

P.S. You couldn't suck any worse if you were Chris F***ing Weinke. (lol)

Good Morning Qville !

I have decided to avoid all work today and tomorrow like the plague , even called and left myself a message that i was calling in sick and i had the 2 day Kathmandu Flu.  So that being the case i have enough time to sit here and really ramble along so u can all say wtf does he waste his time posting this crap - well bite me. (not like that u freaky bast**ds)

I was flipping channels this morning and for some reason i stop on foxnews cause i heard a mention of last nights debate. I know waste of time but well what else do i have to do today.  So the anchor says ok let's bring in an "undecided voter" to see if last nights debate swayed them to pick a candidate.  Well on cue not only is this "random" undecided voter a woman but a black woman and guess what she is voting for Romney !   Lmao  for like 3 mins and said out loud to myself wow how could fox news miss the chance to toss in her adopted Mexican baby to really make a statement indecision   Oh fox news how you slay me !  I would say well played but really , i mean really - HA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Lions end of game meaningless TD well all i can say is "ouch" surprise it wasn't too meaningless for a lot of sports prognosticators and investors.  I could almost hear all the cursing and swearing at the bears when that TD was scored like i was professor Xavier on X-Men indecision   For those who it applies to today's theme is: Hate the bears not the bookie !

Last night's MNF game angered me to no end!   The Bears dominated but still could not FINISH THEM!  The offense, started out nicely and then disappeared!  I guess you have to give some credit to the Lions defense???

If I hear one more person question Cutler's toughness, I'm going to sack you like Suh did Cutler!

At any rate, the Bears are now 5-1 and are in 1st place and face CAR and TEN the next 2 weeks before their schedule gets tough with having HOU & SF the following 2 weeks.

If the NHL doesn't get a deal done by this Thursday, the entire season is lost!  WTF!!!

About 5 years ago, maybe a little longer, there was this thought that LED ZEPPELIN should reunite for 1 final World tour, a reunion tour.
Robert Plant was the reason that this did not happen. He opposed the idea, so much that one of the Music companies deposited $320 million dollars in his bank and told him to make it happen..........he still rejected the notion. surprise

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Plant and I respect his decision, as much as I would of given my left nut to see that show, but, wow! It must be nice to turn down $320 million!

Correction to Nick's post above.. Thursday is merely the deadline to have a complete 82 game schedule.  They can still save part of the season if a deal is reached at a later date, but it would be with fewer games

Hi everyone.. Had to run around after work last night getting a few more items for my halloween costume, so by the time I got home, the Giants were already up on the Cardinals 7-0.. Frowny face.  Since I didn't feel like watching the debate, I then had a dilemma.  Which TV do I mute and which do I turn the sound on? Joe Buck and Tim McCarver in a baseball game that's out of hand or the MNF crew in a boring football game.. And the winner was, neither.. Thank you itunes

Other than that, I don't have much.. Back to work.. For now

Easy with those British tabloid numbers, lol. I think i remember reading in Blender(?) that it was more like $120-ish , still ridiculous but well within the normal range for these iconic band world tours that go on for years. And he was working with Allison Krause(spel?) and didnt want to put that on hold indefinitely for a ton of cash because he already had a ton of cash. Also wasn't this one of the first cases where artists said screw it to ticket companies over money? That tour would have potentially made billions in tickets alone, so $120 mil+ each would have almost been the reverse percentage for artists in terms of payment. I think Louis CK mentions this when talking about selling his own tour tix online vs. ticketmaster etc. and the venues that are contractually forced to use the service.

I've heard that number too and also others that are much lower. I'm not sure anyone knows or if it really matters. But the point is still he may have changed the game (again) in terms of the music industry. It's a pretty interesting tipping point considering how many other bands  in 2007? 2008? would have jumped at any 9 digit number for a tour, especially with music sales just being the live show promotion at this point.

Unless you're the IE8 dubstep guy who's made a killing off downloads for having someone one pay him to use the song in the first place. Would anybody be shocked if - his song download > actual Internet Explorer 8 downloads. LOL

S*** always happens my last day of work before vacation.  I sent a text to a friend of mine about that yesterday and got the response "that's the universe trying to tell you something."  The day was going just fine, of course I had to take patients for an hour cause it got swamped all of a sudden...and then the tracking system went down.  For 3 hours we had to give trips out ourselves.  The evening supervisor asked what we had to do and I said "we're doing things the old-fashioned way."  She said "I don't know what that means."  I said "pen and paper."  Was she really being that stupid?!  I kept telling people it was my send-off from the tracking system.  I was in contact with our help desk and the people from Tele-tracking who built the POS system, and when it started working again he said "that's impossible."  He said our system is a ticking time bomb and it's going to crash because there are way too many logs on file.  They can fight over it for the next week and a half, I don't care because I'm on vacation and will not step foot in that place!

BK over and out

celebrity ghost stories is the best thing on tv! i have recognized only two "celebrities" so far and it was ali's daughter (by association) and alan effing thicke. oh wait. and that guy who played the boss in the whole nine yards. the guy who says "don't blong." his story creeped me out big time!

the san fran game last night was awesome. it was like a s**ned camera man got hold of the fancy new hd slo-mo. you could actually see bats bending and specks of dirt coming off shoes. i could even count yadier molina's eyebrow hairs (11).

Miami Marlins fired Ozzie.  True story.  You'll see.
Shut. It....
#53 | 209 days ago

Since Sharp Square didn't do his daily joke in here, a tribute to him.

A boy in the hills of Kentucky graduates high school and is about to go to college in the hills of West Virginia. His father says to him, "Son, if you meet a nice girl you want to marry, bring her home and introduce her to the family."

18 months go by before the son goes home with a beautiful girl. The family loves her and the father pulls the boy aside and says, "Son, you did really good. She's beautiful, intelligent--tell me, how is she in bed?"

The son says, "Dad, I don't know"

"What do you mean you don't know?", asks the dad.

"She's a virgin, dad." replies the son.

"Then you can't marry her, son." replies the dad.

"Why  not?" asks the son.

"Because, son," says the father. "If she's not good enough for her own family, she's not good enough for ours."

Best thing they could of done. Ozzie has a bad habit of writing checks with his mouth that his a** cant cash. Not to mention as a manager his teams were very undisciplined and well simply unmotivated on the field.  They played poorly defensively under him in Chicago although they got away with it for a while but it carried over to Miami and teams had horrible approaches at the plate under his regime.

Worst of all his attitude of im Ozzie and im cool enough to do what i want when i want carried over into the club house and players began to look at it that way and it simply caused a horrible atmosphere in which some players from past have commented on.

that is shocking. Not his fault they built a ballpark that didn't quite fit the team. Large park and a team loaded with power hitters--gee, wonder what could have gone wrong? If only there was a way for Marlins brass to have seen the effect a new stadium with huge dimensions can have on a team of power hitters..... Oh, that's right. Their divisional rivals New York Mets put up a humongous stadium that killed Wright's power numbers the last 3 years, where the team leader in homeruns 2 years ago only had 12!!!!!

And for that debacle of a stadium that was only full a handful of times this season, the city of Miami got taken for $363 million by Loria and crew.

Ozzie can come manage my Mets anytime. I'd love it and so would the NY Press. In a heartbeat.

Yep i did enjoy his antics and he was always solid for a couple good one liners and quotes through out the season. But i just wouldn't pick him to manage my team , nothing personal simply don't see the upside in him. But who knows maybe he will be back in dugout somewhere else soon  !

I don't know why I keep trying to run outside. In the gym, I can only look ridiculous to three people tops instead of whoever's around outside, walking by, or driving by. At least I was able to stop and start through 35 minutes and 6 laps around my makeshift track.

On the end of the health spectrum, as part of the Combined Federal Campaign (the annual charity drive of federal employees), people are selling snacks and soda. It's basically the office CVS, and it's not far from my cube. While I have been able to avoid binging on candy, I keep buying and hoarding. It may be for a good cause, but it's making me risk diabetes.

Tigers/Giants World Series. Here's hoping it's a good one.

Can I just say that I really really hate "bro culture?" Thanks.

I agree completely and there's the fact that buying a pink bucket of chicken or pink can of soda is kinda NOT helping at this point. That Jezebel article hits the nail on the head, but really only goes into detail of 1 of the 3 problems with awareness campaigns today.

I have to disagree to a certain degree. It's "Breast Cancer Awareness". I know so many people who have had mastectomies, gone through chemotherapy, survived breast cancer etc. and still I think bringing awareness is never a bad thing. Whether it seems like just another marketing ploy or not, I don't think there's ever anything wrong with a reminder that early detection can prevent the worst outcome (I did read the article, btw...I understand what she's saying, but...). And even though I have known and do know people with breast cancer, I *still* don't generally think about checking myself on a regular basis without being reminded. If I buy a can of soup with a pink label - there's a reminder. If I buy a pink reusable canvas grocery bag at Safeway for an extra $1 - a reminder every time I use it. A breast cancer awareness pink Bic pen pack - reminder every time I use a pen. Pink Duracell AAA's...reminder every time I change the batteries in my remote control. (See where I'm going?)

At what point is it over saturation? Think about it, who is *not* aware of breast cancer anymore? Komen's been around for decades. At what point do you move on from awareness to research. Like the article Marcus shared, it's a lazy way for people to think they're doing something. On the corporate level, it's mostly PR. Do you really think the NFL cares? Their actions in everything else show they don't give a damn about anyone.

Also it's whole, well, juvenile-ness of the whole "Save the Boobies" campaign. It's appealing to people's basal instincts and our culture's tendency to objectify women. The risk of breast cancer increases with age. Do you really think the people who buy this stuff give a damn about old women's breasts? Probably not, because old women's breasts aren't objectified.

It also bothers me that there are so many other cancers starving for funds- ovarian, pancreatic, lung to name a few, and they aren't getting them because breast cancer has a better marketing campaign.

Note: I will concede that part of my objection could involve my intensely low opinion of human nature.

Just to butt in a tad......

My dad had lung cancer. He underwent chemo and radiation treatment. The drugs he was given that helped him deal with the symptoms from chemo and radiation (and anyone who has either gone through it themselves or watched someone they knew and love go through it knows the affects from either are horrible.........depending on where the cancer is) were originally created for breast cancer. What researchers and doctors find for breast cancer is used for other .....less popular (in ways of support/funding) cancers.

If going pink and having a month devoted to Breast Cancer helps find cures and other stuff that helps fight this f**ker (cancer), so be it.

1 - I don't think any amount of "reminders" is over saturation. I do think that "awareness" might not be the proper term anymore, but no amount of reminders for women to have themselves checked or funding to help cancer research is too much, IMHO. I really don't care if corporations are using it as PR at this point. Do I think the NFL cares? No. But I think that there are plenty of NFL players who do. Every bit of breast cancer awareness gear that they wear throughout the month of October gets auctioned off and the proceeds go to breast cancer research. I think that's a great cause, whether it's PR or not.

I agree about the juvenile and some of the male "save the boobies", "if you won't check them, I will" can be obnoxious but again - whatever. If self examinations, medical examinations, or just a silly guy spouting off reminds me to check...whatever works.

I know that there are SO many cancers out there - I have a friend who just passed away from pancreatic cancer on October 8 too. My father passed away from a very VERY rare form of cancer (at the time, only 1 in 10,000 cancer cases was this type). I don't really think that breast cancer funding is taking away from funding for other types of cancers just because the awareness isn't there for the other kinds. I'm not a doctor, but when it all comes down to it I figure cancer is cancer...once they get on track finding a cure for one, I have to think that it's only a matter of time before it becomes easier to find a cure for others. If it has to start with breast cancer, then does it really matter if guys are being juvenile about it or corporations are using it simply for PR? As I said in my original paragraph...at least I'm being reminded to check, so that in itself is helping with possible early detection, which could save a life.

I didn't know that about lung cancer treatment. I should have though, since that's what my mother died of (and yes, it's unspeakably awful).

That said, I will continue to argue that funds given to the generic "awareness" is an inefficient use of resources, especially when most of it primarily exists to give corporations good press. As I think about it though, I'm not sure why I'm surprised. People do most everything for selfish and/or superficial reasons, self very much included.

Asking here because I'm not too fond (possibly just lazy) of looking it up, but for the "pinkwashing" that Eric and Marcus have brought up, we can narrow it down to just Komen in particular, how much of this "awareness" actually goes to the cancer research part of it?

I don't have any numbers because I don't feel like looking it up either - but I do know (and I was actually going to come back in and say) - pretty much whenever I buy something that has a pink ribbon or pink packaging or is a special breast cancer awareness edition of something, there's pretty much always a % of proceeds that go toward breast cancer research, and it's very rarely at an extra cost. The only time I can ever remember paying extra for something pink rather than just a regular version is the canvas reusable grocery bags I mentioned above. They were $1 over the normal ones and the $1 extra went toward breast cancer research.

Quick: Of all the things we are saturated with, awareness is the one I have the least amount of issues with. Why over-analyze everything? There was a time when people were dying of cancers, hiv, aids, pneumonia, heart disease, tuberculosis and no one, not even them, ever knew the cause of their death, let alone if it could have been prevented or treated. There was a time when people thought they couldn't get certain diseases or disorders because they were straight or they weren't black. Awareness is a good thing. They don't charge extra for that case of diet mtn dew with the pink logo on it, but some companies may donate a penny or dime or whatever when something with a pink label is bought, so where is the harm, really? This seems like a classic no harm/no foul situation to me.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Okay, curiosity got me, so I did look a little (luckily it only took a minute or two).

Wiki: "In 2002, credit card operator American Express launched a "Charge for a Cure" campaign which claimed that "in the search for a cure, every dollar counts." The amount donated per qualifying transaction, regardless of purchase amount, was one penny.[55]"

And then got this fancy pie chart from the donation page on their site:

Quick Google search gives me this Reuters article saying 15% in 2011 (plus 12% on screening and 5% on treatment, also important). 43% on education, which feels quite vague, and 18% on fundraising (I have no idea how that figure compares to other charities).

I over-analyze because I think there's room (and need) for improvement.

Yes, there was a time when all of that was happening, but is that time now? I'm not saying education of that awareness (and I agree with Eric, it's pretty vague) should be cut out completely, but is 37% or 43% of the money depending on source really THAT necessary?

Glad I didn't start this argument on October 1, like I considered doing. I have to admit I am over the whole pink October crap. I get it, women die from breast cancer, they need to be careful, get checkups, care, and a lot of them more/better education. Guess what, to paraphrase Chris Rock, "They ain't trying to cure sh!t, doctors are drug dealers and drug dealers don't make money if you don't need drugs!"

I guess I just don't understand why it's such a big deal. Is it really that big of a deal that your favorite soda has a pink ribbon on it for a month? Does it really bother you that much that NFL players have pink towels, cleats, gloves, etc. for a month? Even if it was a "just because I wanna look pretty" statement - is it hurting anybody?

My problem isn't the awareness, it's the commercialization of it. It's always about the money in the wrong way.

Where I used to work waaaayyy back in the 90's, we had targeted awareness programs with our products. Buy whatever get a little pink ribbon AND a donation slip which we would match. Wear the ribbon as a reminder and talking/spreading piece, "Hey, what is that for Mary?" Then make a donation. It ended up costing us about $100K for 25,000 units. (always about $4 per unit every year for some reason?) When we switched pink packaging in the early 2000's, with a "for every one we sell a portion will go to research" tag line - we sold more units (40K) with our donation around $1 per. So we actually made MORE money and donated $60,000 LESS to the cause. That's the problem with corporate cause support in a very small nutshell.

**As an added "middle finger" we went ahead and changed the definition of proceeds from "Gross' to 'Net' profits in the fine print of our website/packaging 5 years in. (My idea, btw.) That's why all dogs go to heaven and why all MadMen go to hell.**

At one point I thought of doing that myself this year, but first I would've had to see where the money was going. Movember's not nearly as saturated as the pink though, so I might not be completely inefficient. Then I realized if I wanted to donate directly, it would be easier, and I have no friends and thus wouldn't raise anything.

Well the NFL pink thing might bother me less if a player could decide to do it any other time of the season but October. But since any player, Fitzgerald(whose mother died from breast cancer) for example, wanted to wear pink on her birthday/deathiversary, to honor her. The NFL would not allow him to do it and would fine him for deviating from their teams uniforms. But hey month of October, put it on everything sell the sh!t out of it, make millions.

To be honest I am already over the baby blue/no shave/movember thing also. Like I said in my first post if the medical/drug companies really were trying to find a cure and not just develop drugs to keep you alive. I might feel different.

Exactly. Awareness campaigns should be grass roots (web roots now) with money bypassing corporations, just like those telethons or 5K's, etc. I'm sure someone at Geico or Sony or AT&T wanted in on that 'Help 4 Haiti Now' campaign.

While drug companies do want to continue to do as little as possible to cure, there are thousands upon thousands of research groups working with the funding from grants and donations, some from cheesy fundraising, that are actually trying to find cures for all types of diseases

I'm sorry, I hit funny because your comment in the midst of the "discussion" struck me as humorous (will we have another discussion over Movember???) not because I think Movember itself is humorous.  I definitely don't.  I don't care how many times I have to be reminded about research or detection of ANY illness.  I've lost many friends to cancer and in fact found out today about another who will be battling.  My father passed away after surgery for prostate cancer.

I would rather see 100 commercials for cancer, HIV, MS, Parkinsons's, Alzheimers, etc. etc. etc. research and detection than ONE useless commercial for McDonald's.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend Debi. I hope s/he will kick its butt.

I understand the frustration with the distribution and corporations using this to make more money for themselves. Should they donate without all the fanfare? Sure. At the same time, there are a LOT of people who donate little bits here and there by purchasing these things or dropping an extra dollar at the register who would normally give nothing. Ever. To me, that's a good thing.

And that's all I'm going to say on the matter.

 I suppose.

It's funny how the people without breasts (most of whom claim to love them) are the ones bitching about this. Well, funny to me at least.
Seemed like a discussion, don't know why you went right to "bitching". Albeit it's rare, but it's not like women are the only ones that get breast cancer, either.

That said, efficiency amongst charity should also be a desire.
Maybe, but I have yet to know a survivor who was concerned about how my dollar was divided to save his or her life.... or one who cares whether or not corporations flaunt their donations. Money shines a spotlight on things. Well, duh.  My mom, aunt, cousin, uncle, and hell my baby sister, are all here (and currently cancer free) because some people who may or may not have seen a pink label or towel cared enough to donate. None of them have ever made any of these arguments being made here. Truthfully, if my boobs should every need a dime, I won't care about this corporation or that one, I'll just be grateful.

Magnetic Science!

While drug companies do want to continue to do as little as possible to cure, there are thousands upon thousands of research groups working with the funding from grants and donations, some from cheesy fundraising, that are actually trying to find cures for all types of diseases

HEY jESS OK I KEEP GETTING CHALLENGED BY YOU AND I LOVE TO RESPOND TO A CHALLENGE, BUT I HAVE NO CLUE AS TO WHAT THE CHALLENGE IS OR HOW TO RESPOND. SO TO MAKE THIS A FAIR CONTEST I AM ASKING YOU TO FILL ME IN ON WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE HAPPENING HERE. FOR THAT MATTER I ASK ANYONE THAT KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON HERE TO GIVE ME A CLUE
