MLB Hot Stove Discussion
The Hot Stove is beginning to heat up, with the Winter Meetings starting next week. Talk about the moves as they happen, as well as your team. What do they need to accomplish this offseason? What moves do you want them to make? How much cash do they have floating around to use (hint: Unless it's Tampa or Oakland, it's more than you think)?

Would love to see the Rockies get some pitching help without having to give up Tulo, Cargo or Dexter Fowler.

I'd like to see some decent pitching and a good second second baseman for a change in Minnesota.

got really bad news for you, then. yesterday, Cubs signed Rob Deer (Mr. Swing and Miss/Homerun) to be the Assistant Hitting instructor. Ouch!  That would be like being assigned row boat captain for rowboat 45 on the Titanic, lol.

Mets say they want to keep Dickey, Wright, Santana, and Pelfrey. With Niese, Gee, Harvey and McHugh, plus, have Zack Wheeler ready if needed, and Jeremy  Hefner didn't pitch too bad as a starter either.  Forgot about Mejia and Familia. That will make 11 pitchers for 5 spots. Have pitching to give up for a RH Power OF that can play every day, still have to wonder about who will be at Catcher (Thole needs to either hit .350 to keep the job or start looking to yank balls out of the yard. Who plays CF for Mets next year? Leave Duda in RF, Davis at 1st Base, Murphy at 2nd, Wright at 3rd, and Tejada at SS. And who the hell is going to be our closer? Parnell? Francisco? Will they make a trade? And will they keep Edgin up for a 2nd lefty out of the pen?

I'll get to the Orioles offseason later, but for now I want to share this from Fangraphs today. It's an accounting of each team's local TV deal and how much revenue they receive from it a year. Some of those deals are just insane. At the same time, the new national TV deal will net each team an additional $25 million a year from what they get now starting in 2014. This is why there's so much money flying around. Many teams are making huge coin from TV, and for the teams that don't, the boost from the national TV contract should allow them to keep the checkbooks open.

Last winter the Rockies acquired 19 pitchers... And they were historically awful
This winter, they let two of their more dependable bullpen arms in Josh Roenicke and Matt Reynolds go... The Reynolds deal netted them a corner infield prospect at least, most likely in hopes of becoming an affordable replacement for Todd Helton since his future is uncertain after a second surgery in the last several months.
In my hopes and dreams, the Monforts would sell the team to somebody who wants to win, and clean house organization wide starting with Dan O'Dowd

With the Indians aquiring Mike Aviles and Luis Hernandez, I'm afraid Asdrubl Cabrera and his $6.5m contract will be traded.  Then Dolan only has to get rid of Shin Soo Choo or Chris Perez to to get the team salary back down to $38M again this year.

It looks like Lars Anderson is going to get a chance to play 1B in the majors next year, that is if he can beat out Yan Gomes.

Giants don't need to make any blockbuster deals or sign any expensive free agents.  They just need to keep the bull pen strong first.  Then a couple of questions.  The leadoff hitter.  Sign Pagan?  Go with Blanco?  Either way it might be a short term solution until Gary Brown is ready to jump to the bigs in a season or two.  Next...  2nd base.  I think Scuttero was a flash in the pan.  I would not sign this guy for more than one year at any kind of hefty price.  But....  There is no good replacement.  So the Giants hands may be tied there.

They already signed Affeldt.  A good start.  Now we wait to see what they do next....

The first big domino fell in free agency. BJ Upton signed with the Braves for 5 years, approx. $75 million. That feels a tad bit high to me, since Upton hasn't done anything with the bat in 4 years (his OBP just keeps going down). However, he's good in center field and has power. I can see why the Rays wouldn't pay that, but I can see why the Braves would. Presumably this means Bourn is headed somewhere else.

The Mets need to get rid of their coaching staff, Terry Collins is joke and cannot lead a team to the play-offs, no less the World Series. Funny you are making fun of the Cubs hitting coach Rob Deer, but the Mets have Dave Hudgens, which had said last season Ike Davis will not listen tome to help him hit better. OK, if it was one player I could see that, but 5 out of 8 starters were hitting.250 or below, I will have to say it is more of the coaches there. Dan Warthen, as the pitching coach come on, it is your job to know that when pitchers should be in the game or taken out, so when I see relievers coming in who have no business in there, like Miguel Batista and Manny Acosta, no wonder we are in losing games which we had the lead. The falls on Terry Collins too, and his management of the players were mind blowing when it came to the line ups and who he was taking out when.

CF should be given to Kirk Nieuwenhuis, or even give Jordany Valdespin a shot at it. The Mets need to move Hefner into the bull pen not because he cannot pitch, instead it would give them a go to pitcher, and depending how Pelfrey pitches coming off injury, think about putting him in the bull pen. Wheeler I would give a serious look at in spring and see where he is, Dickey, there is no way to expect him to have another year like last look at 12-14 wins in 2013. Santana is almost to the bottom of the hill in his career, we can only hope Gee and Niese respond back with the type of season they had in 2011. Harvey, and Mchugh I am not sold on being a true starter in the majors just yet, need to see what they do in spring, but I would have no issue with them in the bull pen. this is why I am lost on why the Mets signed Bixler and traded for Hicks, with Murphy and Tejada playing 2B and SS and Lutz, Turner and Valdespin all Ready on the roster they did not another IN'r

Thole hitting .350 or start looking to hit ball outs to keep his job, that is silly, to many catcher out there who do not hit the long ball and his team still won the World Series. He needs to hit .290 or better as long he he hitting clutch hits to start a rally, keep it going or to even win a game I take that or a guy who hits 30 HR and 26 of them come when the Mets are up 3 or more or losing by more then 4 so the HR really did not make a difference.

The Mets are facing the same issues they have faced the last 4 years and guess what Sandy, Tommy and Mike have not met those needs. As for how much money I will go by what Davey Johnson said last year we do not need to spend a lot of money of Fielder or Pujols when we have someone who can play first base all ready. That money can go towards building a team instead.

The Pirates have signed Russell Martin to a 2 year, $17 million deal. Martin hit .211/.311/.403 last year, but that average was a result of a very low .222 BABIP. Basically, either Martin was very unlucky last year or his bat speed is completely gone. Since the latter would've been obvious to scouts and analysts, it can be reasonably assumed it was the former. Martin can obviously take a walk, which is of course a huge plus. In Pittsburgh, I would expect the average to go up just by regression to the mean, and thus the OBP is his walk rate remains steady, which is should since its been consistent his whole career. I would expect less power just because he can't take advantage of Yankee Stadium anymore. He's although a decent catch and throw guy. Overall: an improved average and OBP, less power, and either way, a huge upgrade on Rod Barajas.

The bigger news of the day was the Twins trading Denard Span to the Nationals for pitching prospect Alex Meyer. I like this deal for both teams.

For Washington, Span gives them a center fielder with a career OBP of .357, which doesn't grow on trees. The Nats can now put Harper and Werth in the corners and move Morse a first, a good move IMO, since I'm not sold on paying LaRoche what he will likely get. Span also has a favorable deal for the next three years.

Minnesota meanwhile gets something they rarely have: a pitcher that can miss bats. Meyer apparently has a fastball that tops 97 and a nasty outpitch breaking ball. There are some health concerns and some worries he'll have to be moved to the bullpen, but there's a lot to like here. The Nationals gave up a good prospect for Span, and it could bite them in the future. However, these are the moves you make when you're in win-now mode like the Nationals are.

it would be the sh!t if the Cardinals could make a trade for Asdrubal Cabrera...Cardinals havent really had a solid shortstop in years...eckstein was decent, furcal is great, but hurt all the time. BRING IN ASDRUBAL MO!!!

Giants just signed Angel Pagan to 4 years for $40mil.  Not too bad.  It leads me to think they may no longer be very high on Gary Brown....
#17 | 500 days ago

And now the Giants re-signed NLCS MVP Marco Scuttero to 3 years.  Obviously the 2nd base options were real thin.  So all the pieces from 2012 are in place for 2013.  The only thing it seems they are looking for now would be possibly a right handed hitting outfielder to compliment Blanco in left.
On the pitching side, the Brian Wilson question still remains.  He can be picked up by anyone now...  I read there may be a little bad blood because he wanted to bet picked up before the filing deadline.
