I agree with Jones on Mark Hamill.

As for the poll question, you have asked 2.  Who is the best actor to appear in a Batman movie, and who did the best at performing their roles in a Batman movie.  (Not necessarily the same thing.)

I'm going to say right now the person(s) who performed best at their roles:  Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger both performed spectacularly, each one fitting their role to the particular world.

Of the others listed, Michelle Pfeiffer did awesome as Catwoman, but you don't list Julie Newmar or Eartha Kitt. (You have Adam West).

And I enjoyed Michael Caine as Alfred.

(Sadly, I have yet to watch the latest movie, I do hope to very soon.)

I was wondering the same thing about Jack Nicholson.

He didn't play the Joker. He did his regular Jack Nicholson that he does in every movie he's ever been in except with clown makeup this time.

Yes, he's the Joker in every movie really, so I figured that role was perfect for him.

Didnt realize this movie has been redone with so many top actors/actresses playing their roles. Last Batman movie I saw was with Val Kilmer, after that they became redundant to me

and that is why Jack Nicholson is a favorite actor of mine.....whether he has the same type of demeanor or whatever, it's still yes in my book.

I like it when I'm seeing a character in a movie as opposed to seeing an actor. One of the reasons I like Gary Oldman is because of his range. Dude can play any character and all you see is that character. Sid Vicious, Zorg, George Smiley, Sirius Black, Dracula, you're not seeing Gary Oldman, you're seeing the actual character.
Every single role Nicholson has ever played I only saw Jack Nicholson. Which is fine for some movies, but in the case of Batman I was really looking forward to seeing the Joker and walked out totally disappointed when all I got was Jack Nicholson. Again.

Jack may be the best actor, but he hammed it up quite a bit as the Joker; Heath Ledger's Joker would have been more fitting for Tim Burton's Batman since Burton's anti-heroes are usually dark, disturbed, and dangerous. It is why Ledger won the Oscar, not just because he died of a drug overdose.

I can respect that.  I think he did add a little Joker to the character though....then again, maybe he's REALLY the Joker in every day life and that is why choosing him to play this part was sooo natural?

I seem to remember Ledger secluded himself to get into the part.  Other actors recalled his unnerving presence whenever he was in character.

And Nicholson definitely hammed it up, he was the mad clown.  I've seen both personalities come through at times in the comics.

Totally agree about the Joker. You could basically keep this series going on and on forever like the comics books and graphic novels with the same types of character changes or motivations etc.

1) I liked Heath's Joker better, even though Jack was the reason to watch the first Burton film

2) How can anybody put Danny DeVito on a best actor's list...especially in his role as the Penguin. I know his character was supposed to be gross, but it was almost unwatchable.

3) Even though I rated Bale higher, my favorite Batman was Kilmer.  He played Batman with restraint, and played Bruce better than any of the others...IMHO. Too bad he chose "The Saint" over staying with the franchise...maybe he saw where Schumacher was going with the Batman and Robin characters?

Not a huge fan of the Batman movies. They each had their purpose portraying a comic book character. That being said ,the tv series, with its cheap props and writers that barely scripted dialogue sounding slightly more intellectual than that of most porn scripts at the time,  made the series work. Whether showcasing Yvonane Craig as batgirl/Commisioner Gordons daughter or Eartha Kitt cameos as catwoman, the show was always cheezy with some sex appeal. The big screen movie productions, not so much. jmo

Well we all have our likes and dislikes.  But the last 3 elevated it beyond just a comic book by the way it was shot and the high calibre of actors involved.  Chris Nolan's scripts and direction.  Michael Caine?  Class act.  And who is the only actor to win an academy award for his work in a Batman movie?  Heath Ledger.  He made Jack Nicholson (who I admire greatly) look like a comic book 1 dimensional character.  Ledger brought layer up on layer to a complex and mysteriously demented character.  Remarkable work.  Won the Screen Actor's Guild best actor, The Golden Globe best actor and the Oscar.  Was celebrated by his peers and the media and fans...  He will be sorely missed.

That's fine...  I appreciated the Adam West version myself.  It was of course made in a completely different style.  The TV show was done as a huge joke.  Adam West "got it" right from the start.  He understood that it was all done intentionally campy and silly.  Him playing the part as being deadly serious was all part of the gag.

Actually, he died after the filming was complete and was in post-production. Something about Mary Kate Olsen (or was it Ashley) and bad drugs afterwards.

The other person who was a pretty good actor in the Batman series was Robert Wohl, who played the reporter working with Kim Basinger's Vicky Vale in the first Tim Burton Batman. Seem to remember he had a long run on HBO in ARLI$$
