Favorite thing to do on a snow day from school
Most of the schools here are either closed or late start because of yesterday's snow storm.  My question is what was your favorite thing to do when you had a non scheduled day off from school because of weather, or other reasons.

I had exactly one day off for snow my entire childhood during the blizzard of 1979. I tunneled through my back yard and freaked my mom out when she couldn't find me even though she was only about 10 feet away.

I usually went outside since I am the middle child, and only boy, which meant my sisters had tv guarded for their fave soap operas.  Snow kick ball or tackle football in our cul-de-sac was great.  I sure wish I could go back 30 years to age 10 when I was in my prime for kick ball greatness.

We'd always have these great "boot" hockey games at the corner rink since we could shovel off most of the snow ourselves (everybody bring a shovel!), but we couldn't get it clean enough to skate. 3 or 4 teams, a couple of goalies who just stayed out there, first to seven, winners stay on the ice, losers shovel between games if the snow was still falling, there was always at least one parent to referee. It was awesome. Geezus I miss that.

I grew up in California. Anytime the school closed we headed to the beach. The one time I remember it snowing I was either in 4th or 5th grade and we just played in it, they didn't shut the school down for it.

We had 1 snow day off from school from middle school through high school.  Basically if we didn't get 2+ feet of snow, school was only delayed by an hour at worst.
But in elementary school we had a few more it seemed and we'd always get a neighborhood football game on followed by epic paramilitary snowball fights

We used to shovel off the driveway and play hockey while wearing boots.  With the blizzard of '78, my brother and I spent Sunday clearing off the ice on the local pond so that we could shoot the puck around.  We spent about 45 minutes shoveling the snow, then another hour or so shooting around.  The blizzard hit that night and dumped almost 3 feet of snow on us...we knew on Tuesday that we would be off from school until at least the following Monday....then, on Friday, they announced that school was canceled for the next week.  It was fun!

Now, when there is snow that keeps my patients away, I get up early, build a fire, cook breakfast and sit around all day.

Oh, and we were never off because it was snowing. They put our 3 "snow days" in May every year because we never got to actually use them in the winter.

Hmmm...  The one time it snowed in my life in Santa Cruz was in 1976.  All the snow was gone by noon and there were no cancellations.  We did, however, lose a week from school in 1982 due to massive rains and flooding in the area.  We were without power for 3 days so there really wasn't much to do except go look at the San Lorenzo river a mere inches from overflowing the levees.  Was also amazed at the size of the debris floating down what had become a raging torrent.  Tree trunks the size of cars were surging the river crests.  It was something to see...

My dad always built us a skating rink in the back yard every winter, so although I don't remember many "snow days" having a skating day was always my favorite thing to do.  The neighborhood kids would come over and we'd all play hockey.  It was a good size rink and we even had proper goals, so it was usually a pretty good time.  My mother would actually make hot chocolate and put it in a thermos or two for us to drink during "period breaks".

if we get a snow day, everyone panics and stays inside, even if it doesn't snow which is usually the case.
