Prepare your own taxes or have someone else do them
With tax season staring soon, just curious how many amature accountants are out their, compared to letting the pro's do them.

Being poor with no real assets makes it super easy to do my own in about 5 minutes.

I do my own.
I find it's much easier to lie and cheat when I don't have to look someone in the eye.

We have a CPA do ours. It's about the same price, and we've actually had better luck with CPA than places like HRB. We used to do our own but when I first started working for the site several years ago I was considered an "independent contractor" or "consultant" so it was a little more involved and I didn't want to screw it up. Now it's different that I'm a full-time employee, but I still have from January to September of last year that will fit into that category. So, if we ever do go back to doing them ourselves it won't be until next year.

corporate accountant where my wife works does them.   her work provides this service as a perk. ours are simple anyway but why not. if there's a screw up the preparer pays any fine.  I think she pays the CPA there $20.00. well worth it.

holy crap that sounds fancy.

i have my step-andrew do them for me every year. not cause i can't, but because i pretend really hard that i can't. and when it starts getting to the theological bracket in my taxes, i start hollering about the church and how corrupt it is and why the f**k should i get a bigger tax break just cause a word on my payroll reads "church" while there are homeless people out there who don't even get to complain about having to do taxes. then it escalates into me swearing i'll quit my job in some harrison-"i didn't kill my wife!"-ford-jumping-off-the-dam fashion and moving to bhutan where they practice gross domestic happiness vs. gross domestic product, because money doesn't actually make you happier beyond like, $70k a year and then i start packing my bags, get distracted and find  old mostly empty lotion bottles loaded with scent from my past and i crash out on the floor in a flood of tears and memories. when i wake up, the taxes are all done.

I prepare my own.  I used to just use Excel, and create a basic spreadsheet (Following the tax form) so it would perform my calculations as I received my W-2s and other documents.

Last couple years I've been using TurboTax online to complete them.

I'm ticked off that you can't e-file the Federal return unless you BUY Turbo Tax or some other software.  There is no reason for that.  Here in CA, we can do the entire thing on line and file on line.  Easy and quick.  Of course, maybe no cost e-filing is part of the reason why the State is broke.   (Sort of half joking there..)

World's Tiniest Violin there, chief. Taxes are the price we pay for a functioning society, and we all must pay some if we have the means to do so.

I hate them too, but not because I have to pay them. I'm fine paying them. I just hate having to deal with the yearly P.I.T.A. of pulling everything together and either filing myself or CPA appointments. Blech.

From what he's said in political threads around here, I doubt that's what he meant.

I used to work for H&R Block, and I can tell you that anybody who pays attention in their tax classes is well-trained (I used to instruct for them, too). This isn't an ad for them...I do not work for them any longer for a reason, which has nothing to do with their quality of work (or mine). I do mine with TurboTax now.
