Bookclub: February 2013
Wow, you all are so lucky.  I'm not around for approximately 1100 months, but I come back JUST to perform my bookclub duties.  You're welcome.
I thought about being a d**k and picking all really, really long books since it's the shortest month of the year, but I won't.  Mainly because I won't have time to read anything TOO long either.  So instead I'm picking all books that were made into movies, some more recently than others.  Enjoy.  Or don't.  Whatever.

Jaws - It’s out there in the water . . . waiting. Nature’s most relentless predator. It fears nothing. It attacks anything. It devours everything. The seaside community of Amity is at its mercy. A small-town police chief, a marine biologist, and a modern-day Ahab must try to stop it. But they are only three men . . . alone against the Great White Death.

Beautiful Creatures - Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

The Silver Linings Playbook - During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.  When Pat meets the tragically widowed and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year’s Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their “contract.” All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining.

Probably one of my least favorites was from the month that I picked.  That's what I get for listening to my librarian friend who reads everything.  She thinks I'm a Nazi b/c I can't get into the Stephanie Plum novels.

I actually already read Jaws, but it fit the theme and I couldn't think of anything else quickly enough.
The other two I want to read, so I'm ok with either one.

My wife read Beautiful Creatures.  Didn't tell me much, beyond the fact that it's one of several books being made into a movie.  I'll probably read it when I get a chance.

I loved Beautiful Creatures.  I'm on the wait list for the 2nd in the series at the library.

I just saw Silver Linings Playbook, it's a bit overrated, but I hope it still wins a few Oscars, especially Robert De Niro. Beautiful Creates sounds like a chick flick, so I dont wanna see that. Jaws is the best movie though of the 3, so it gets my vote.

I've been wanting to read Silver Linings Playbook anyway - been on my list for a couple of weeks. Yay!

I too loved Beautiful Creatures. I ended up reading that + the entire series in less than a week, I think. It might have been a "chick flick" but it was also weird, dark, and with magic. I mean, what's not to like?

I'm not gonna lie...I probably won't read Jaws if it gets voted in. Not because I didn't enjoy the movie...I actually don't even know why. Maybe I will.

Uhh, I just read that synopsis of SLP, and uhh yeah, no. I already didn't like the title, and now that I've read that, I won't be reading it if it happens to win which it probably will. Gah.

Because when the options aren't chick flicks, I tend to read them. Some months are better than others for me, as I assume it is for all of us.

True, I'm pretty open to anything but I must admit...I've struggled getting in to a couple of books that have been chosen. I still have yet to read Dragon Tattoo

haha! I love the Stephanie Plum books because they're about the only thing I can read before bed and not stay up all night with race brain (they're mindless entertainment). I can completely understand when people can't get into them though...they're goofy and girly.

I think (?) the only month I didn't even download a book was the month with Beautiful Creatures...besides that I usually at least try them and eventually finish it. The only one I remember not liking at all was Life Blood, it was just too wordy and boring. That's also why I haven't finish Dragon Tattoo, but I will....one day.

And I keep picturing Stephanie Plum as Katherine Heigl.  I don't mind picturing her, but just not as a literary character.  That's what I get for waiting for a book until after the movie comes out.  And I haven't even seen the movie.  My brain.  Who knows why it does the things it does.  Dragon Tattoo was a tough read until a little over halfway through.  I really got into it when it got going.  It just took.  so.  long.  to.  get.  there.
