FIRST!

Happy Hump Day Q'ers!  It's was raining and it stopped, and the sun (whatever THAT is) is supposed to come out later this afternoon.

Daughter celebrated her 21st birthday last night by going out to dinner with family.  Son had to leave to go to band practice before food was served.  She was a little upset about that, but my in-laws were there, so it made it better. She was REALLY upset that they didn't ask to see her ID....shortly after midnight on the 26th, at lunch with my wife, and at dinner...until she realizes what a Pain in the A$$ it is when they will ask her.

Speaking of drinking, the German Pope is stepping down tomorrow.  I am kinda sad that I didn't get to go to Rome and take communion at one of his masses...it looks like it would have been fun...

Have a GREAT HUMP DAY!!

Where in the hell is SID?!  and CACTUS JACK?   RUUUUUUDE is right! angry

PUCKHEADS, I am LIVID!  LIVID, I tell ya!!

The NHL is proposing 2 changes to the league!

1) a re-alignment (See 1st picture) of the teams into new Divisions and Conferences to help with travel and time zone issues.  I get that and I am ok with the re-alignment, for the most part. I don't understand why they are calling the EASTERN Teams the CENTRAL DIVISION? Or why TB & FLA are in the CENTRAL instead of having them in the ATLANTIC and moving either CLM & PIT or NYR & NYI into the CENTRAL?? But, that's so minor to me.

2) a new playoff structure (see 2nd picture) which, currently, is the top 8 teams, based on total points from each conference make the playoffs. The new structure would mean the top 3 teams from each division (6 teams from each Conference) and then 2 WILD CARD teams from each Conference, based on total points. The teams would then be re-seeded after each round (within their Conference).......  OK..........NO! NO! NO!   STUPID!!  If it aint broke, don't fix it!!  (I like the re-seeding part)

The old way used to be that the top 4 teams from each division would make the playoffs. The problem with that was that there were teams in harder/tougher divisions that would not make the playoffs that actually had more points than teams in other divisions, that actually made the playoffs, So, they decided to just do the top 8 teams from each conference, including the division winners.  Now they are talking about mixing the two formats into 1??  UGH!!!   NO WILD CARD!  This is not MLB or the NFL!!  NO! NO! NO!

That's all I got for now!

I don't really care about the allignment ( it's not final yet, NHLPA needs to chime in. I think each conf will have one 7 team div and one 8 team imo) but I do like the wild cards just so if one  Div is way better than the other, those teams make the playoffs instead of just making it based on where you play. Get the best teams in.

Avs played like poop last night, but because of their goalie eeked out a point with their shootout loss.
I also got tickets to the Avs-Blackhawks game next Friday night.. yippee

I don't have much else, so I leave you with a movie scene

Hooper X: For years in this industry, whenever an African American character, hero or villain, is introduced USUALLY by my white artist names. They got SLAPPED with racist names that singled them out as Negros! Now--my book, "White-Hating Coon", don't have any of that bullsh*t. The hero's name is Maleequa and he's descended from the black tribe that established the first society on the planet while all you European motherf**kers were all hiding out in caves 'n sh*t, terrified of the sun. He's a strong role-model that a young black reader can look up to. 'Cause I'm here to tell ya: the chickens are coming home to roost, y'all. The black man is no longer going to be playing the minstrel in the medium of comics and sci-fi fantasy. We're keeping it real! And we're going to get respect by any means necessary.
Holden (Ben Affleck): Ah, c'mon, that's a bunch of horsesh*t! Lando Calrissian was a black guy, y'know, he got to fly the Millenium Falcon! What's the matter with you!
Hooper: Who said that?
Holden: (standing up) I did. Lando Calrissian is a positive role-model in the realm of science fiction fantasy.
Hooper: Hey, F*CK Lando Calrissian!
(Holden shrugs and sits down)
Hooper: Uncle-Tom ni**er, heh. Always some white boy gotta invoke the holy trilogy. Bust this! Those movies are about how the white man keeps the brother-man down--even in a galaxy far far away. Check this sh*t. You got cracker farmboy Luke Skywalker, Nazi poster boy blond hair blue eyes. Then you got Darth Vader, blackest brother in the galaxy. Nubian god!
Banky (Jason Lee): (standing up) What's a nubian?
Hooper: Shut the f*ck up! (Banky sits down) Now. Vader, he's a spiritual brother, down with the force and all that good sh*t. Then this cracker Skywalker gets his hands on a lightsaber, and the boy decides HE'S gonna run the whole f**king universe! Gets a whole KLAN of whites together and they go bust up Vader's hood, the Death Star! Now what the f*ck do you call that?
Banky: Intergalatic civil war?
Hooper: Gentrification!! They gonna drive out the black element to make the galaxy quote-unquote safe for white folks! In "Jedi," the most insulting installment when Vader's beautiful black visage is SULLIED when he pulls off his mask to reveal a feeble, crusty old white man! They trying to tell us that deep inside, we all wants to be WHITE!!!
Banky: Well, isn't that true?
(Hooper pulls out a gun, releases the safety, kicks over the podium and shoots Banky several times, and Banky falls, clutching his chest. All the other speakers and audience members (excluding Holden and Alyssa who we are about to meet) dive for cover or scatter screaming as...)
Hooper: (shooting into the air): Black rage!!! Black rage!!! I kill all white folks I lay my motherf**kin' eyes on!!

Currently, the playoff format is that the best 8 teams, from each Conf, make the playoffs.  The only divisional crap that comes into play is the winner from each Division.

With the new format, you will have the top 3 teams from each division and the final 4 spots (2 from each Conference) comes from the most points.

So, for example, in the new format, you could have something like this:

PACIFIC DIVISION (WEST CONF)
LA - 101 PTS
ANA - 99 PTS
SJ - 98 PTS
PHX - 97 PTS
VAN - 97 PTS
CLG - 96 PTS
EDM - 79 PTS

MID-WEST DIVISION (WEST CONF)

CHI - 105 PTS
STL - 93 PTS
NASH - 92 PTS
WPG - 91 PTS
COL - 90 PTS
DAL - 90 PTS
MIN  - 81 PTS

The playoff format would be

PACIFIC - #1 LA (101) , #2 ANA (99), #3 SJ (98)
MID WEST - #1 CHI (105), #2 STL (93), #3 NSH (92)

WC - # 7 PHX (97) & # 8 VAN (97)

So, that it would be:
LA vs PHX,
ANA vs SJ
CHI vs VAN,
STL vs NSH

When, really, based on today's format, it should be

PACIFIC - LA (101), ANA (99) , SJ (98), PHX (97), VAN (97) & CLG(96)
MID-WEST - CHI (105) & STL(93)

CHI - STL
LA - CLG
ANA - VAN
SJ - PHX

So, in the new format, NSH is being rewarded a playoff spot and CLG is getting screwed of one because CLG has more points than NSH but wouldn't make it.

Hey…

Hockey players need to teach NBA players how to fight… just an observation.

Speaking of basketball, Dennis Rodman is in North Korea. Rumor has it that Michael Jordan, Luc Longley, Ron Harper, and Scotty Pippen are arriving today for a pick up game with Kim Jung Un and some of his homeboys. I’m feeling really good about this one. Bulls take it by 38.

The Kings need to beat the Wings tonight. It has to happen. Woody’s team can win a bunch of other games later. Come on LA.

The Braves begin 2013 with no ties to any of the 14 division titles players, I love the new look. I’m ready for baseball season. Fantasy baseball… OMG…

Tony G, play one more year for the ATL. Falcons, draft a DB. You need it. Oh, and come up with a way to defend tight ends.

March Madness will be here before you know it, I love me some basketball this time of the year.

I have band practice tonight and a gig Saturday for a private party at the local Marriott. The food is unbelievable, the bar is open, free hotel room to crash in afterwards, and pretty nice scenery. All of which should make for an excellent weekend.

Picked up Earth, Wind, and Fire's Greatest Hits yesterday, listening to it now. Band has worked up the song 'September' that's on it, so I am pumping it in my brain. I am feeling real smooth right now.  :0)

The glass is half full with more being poured.

Dig you guys, even when you don't want me to....

Gotta go for now...

True, but that happens now in the east with teams in the crappy South East Div. look at the Standings right now, the Rangers or flyers will/could easily BOTH finish with more points than any SE team and still have one of them not make it into the playoffs. It's the same problem.

That only comes into play because each Division winner make up the first 3 seeds.

So, currently, Carolina is the #3 seed because they are winning their division and is the 3rd worst division leader out of the the 3 and the non-division winners make up seeds #4 - #8 based on most points.

Yep.  Based on this proposed re-alignment, if there are going to be 2 new expansion teams, so that all Divisions have 8 teams, those would be coming from the West.

Seattle is a strongly rumored city to be 1 of those (circled in red in that picture)  and Kansas is the other circled area. I've also heard Portland and Las Vegas as possible rumored areas.

I've heard the Portland and Vegas rumors too. Portland certainly has a beautiful arena that is suitable for hockey already (the Winterhawks of the WHL play there occasionally), and Vegas certainly has the dough.

That chat i mentioned above also goes into them (league & PA) revisiting the alignment in 3 years, because Quebec City, Markham, Ontario(?) and Seattle are all building arenas... maybe kinda. I have NO idea how that would work? Move the Coyotes to Seattle, then what? Some weird, vertically based time zone divisions? (Kansas City?) Four 8 team divisions? I know they want to get to 32 with a few more teams in Canada. The problem is you'd be adding in Quebec and/or Ontario. Clearly better markets, but east heavy again.

Realignment would make them a #6 seed instead of a #3. That's a gotta be better, no? Reward the better reg. season with home ice in rd 1. This is always going to be a problem to some degree.

From what I have seen on here and in the news. Hockey is trying to piss off the remaining fans that they have by realignment and a confusing new playoff system.
Not sure I understand why some fan are pissed about the re-alignment?  Except for not understanding why TB & FLA are in the Central instead of the Atlantic, everything else makes sense and the Detroit and Columbus fans will no longer have to stay up until 1:30am to watch their teams play in the West.  Besides that, everything with the re-alignment, makes sense.

Now, the playoff scenario, that's where everyone, including me, are getting their britches in a bunch!

Totally agree, you're on point.

My fantasy ringer via our buddy:  "The probable sticking point is the playoff format and what that would mean financially. It's always about revenue. Especially for teams taking on salary at the deadline."

I think PHX will get moved. Not sure where? Sea or KC sounds logical.

I also think that FLA Panthers will be moved.  They get absolutely no attendance down in Miami.

Quebec would be ideal to land another team and would be good for Hockey.
Hartford (CT) , Hamilton (ON) would be two more cities, but those are also in the East.  There are too many East Coast teams to begin with.

If they move FLA to KC, that would open a spot for 1 more Eastern Team (Que, Ham or Hart).

I haven't heard much about Markham being a city talked about?

It's all speculation right now.

If the NHLPA, which is who has demanded the re-alignment because of travel headaches, approve the re-alignment, it would start next season.

As for the playoff change, I don't think the players union would approve of the change, but, who knows......I hope it gets shot down!

I think it's time they make a REGULAR season change by making a REGULATION WIN worth 3 points.....this way, ALL games would have 3 points available in the standings...if it goes to overtime, keep it the way it is now.  Why should a team be rewarded for "playing for overtime" at the end?  I think you'd see a little more excitement at the end of a game.  Back in '89 there was a team (Penguins, I think...maybe Rangers) who pulled their goalie in OVERTIME because a win would have meant higher playoff seed and home ice advantage.  It was exciting to watch.

This is true.  It's kind of crazy to only see 2 Divisions in each Conference............again.

It used to be that way, back in the day with the Adams, Patrick,  Norris & Smythe Divisions, but, that was when there were only 21 teams.  Once the expansion took place and the # of teams jumped to 30, the NHL created 2 new divisions (6 Total).

So, to see 30 teams split into only 4 Divisions is old school looking. Not a bad thing at all.

Still, I just wish they would keep the playoff scenario alone. In the new/old 2 Division Conferences, let the 2 Division winners be the 2 top seeds and then let the remaining 14 teams (in the East) or 12 teams (in the West) battle it out for the remaining 6 playoff spots based on points.

This is how it looked in 1997-98, which is the last year that the NHL had 4 divisions.  1998-99 is when it expanded to 6 Divisions.

Kurt,

That is soo funny that you mentioned this!   I have pondered this same question, many times over the past 2-3 years.  My thought was 3 pts for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT or a Shoot Out win and 1 point to the OT or SO loser.

I do believe that the Owners proposed this change, not too long ago (1-2 yrs ago)?? I still can't come up with any valid reasons why not to do this?

I've realized a lot of life for me is a daily battle against the darkness. Last night, the darkness won.

I also realized this past weekend that I've been mispronouncing the word "banal." I felt like such a pseudo-intellectual fraud.

Thing I Learned from Reading Nate Silver's Book: Weather forecasting has gotten better over time, but it's a hard, if not impossible, task to get right all the time for various reasons (mostly: nature is a crafty mistress and conditions change quickly and without much warning). In other words, freaking out over wrong weather forecasts (which are given in percentage ranges anyway because of the uncertainly) is lame and should be played out.

Loved this article about Baseball Prospectus and why the stat revolution was and is so important.

I skimmed the NHL thing, but given that right now the three division winners are given the top three playoff seeds regardless of their position to the rest of the conference, doesn't that make seeds 4-8 each year de facto wild cards?

Everyone go read this week's Start Your Engines. I call out NASCAR, if you need a sweetener.

You didn't write any notes last year, not that it was necessary. The year is a nutshell was that your team and my team dominated all year, then lost in a short series to inferior teams who snuck in the playoffs. Just like real baseball!

(Yes, I'm in, because I'm still bitter about it.)

The biggest complaint that I keep hearing is that taking Detroit out of the west puts an end to some rivalries(Det/Chi, Det/Colo, etc.). I guess the only way I could relate it would me taking Dallas out of the NFC East, sure geographically they don't belong and it would make more sense to move them. But it would also destroy some great rivalries, and if they did that, I would be pissed.

Yeah, I've read those too......I think 99% of DET fans love the move because of the game times. No more staying up late to watch them play on the West Coast 6x a year.   Most of the fans that are bitching about the DET move are CHI & STL fans.  I think that rivalry will always be there, just like it is now with CHI - VAN.  Sure, VAN isnt in our division to face 6-8x a year, but the 3-4x a yr we do play them (from being in the same Conference), is nuts!  I think that it will be the same the 2x we play Det???

New rivalries will be made and in time, it will all be forgotten.

Technically, I guess you can say that the 5 other non-division winners are Wild Cards (in the current format)?

I think the term/definition of Wild Card, with sports, is usually limited to 1-2 teams (MLB, NFL)?  But, I see what you're saying. I guess the same can be said of the NBA as well?

I guess, my point, wasn't soo much the "Wild Card" statement as much as it was the entire scenario of dictating that the top 3 teams from each division are allowed in instead of the top 6 from the conference (after the division winners), regardless of which division that came from in that Conference ?

Back in the day, the NHL would seed all teams for the playoffs.  The division winners wouldn't have to play a best of 3 series.    The first round was a best of 3, the quarterfinal, semi finals and finals were best of 7.  There was NO distinction between East and West when it came time for playoffs....one year, 1979, the Rangers opening round opponent-the Los Angeles Kings (Rangers disposed of them 2-0).  In that season, the division winners got a bye into the quarterfinal round...so the 5th seeded Rangers played the 10th seeded Kings.  That's how the Rangers wound up playing the Canadiens in the finals (my first and only time attending a Stanley Cup Playoff game).  Nowadays, Rangers CAN'T play Canadiens for the Finals.  In '79, there was a "Preliminary Round" which was best 2 of 3. The NHL has struggled with teams being kept out of the playoffs due to "divisional" alignments.  NHL isn't the only league (see NFL 2010)-7-9 Seahawks host a playoff game against the 11-5 Saints, but the 10-6 Giants and Buccaneers didn't even MAKE the playoffs.  There's really no easy way.

The very thought of this makes me sick to my stomach, which is why I had to be sent home early today.

My boss treated all of us to a free lunch at a 5 star uptown restaurant (the type that features a hoity maitre'd). I wounded up getting stomach sickness from the dark chocolate cake for desert.

Then I lost my birthstone ring that my mom bought me, it had deep sentimental value, though it wasn't worth much.

And then a vague friend pass on.

Just not my day.

Unlike when the Patriots robbed the Chiefs for another backup QB with one good season as a starter. The Chiefs got a good deal this time. Looks like Alex has already started saying his goodbyes!

That's a horrible trade for the Chiefs, they gave up the 34th pick for him, he isn't worth that much.
20 years ago, these 2 teams made a similar trade, sending Joe Montana for the 26th pick, which is only 8 spots higher than this time around.

I think Tampa is in MUCH deeper trouble than the Panthers. There are a ton of Snow Birds in South Fla. which is why they want to put MTL, TOR, BOS, OTT, etc. in the same division as them. if anything Tampa is going to move out west somewhere (KC? SEA?) and Phoenix is almost surely going to move as well. I think things shake out again after the '16 season some how. maybe sooner depending on who has a stadium ready.
