Book Club- April 2013
Since I was shanghaied into it, and lately some of the choices have been downers. I present this comedic break:
A Confederacy of Dunces John Kennedy Toole
Its central character, Ignatius J. Reilly, is an educated but slothful 30-year-old man living with his mother in the Uptown neighborhood of early-1960s New Orleans who, in his quest for employment, has various adventures with colorful French Quarter characters.

Bloodsucking Friends Christopher Moore
Jody, a young, single, red-headed woman living in San Francisco, is attacked by a vampire and soon finds that she has become one herself. While attempting to adjust to her new nocturnal lifestyle, she finds the help of Tommy Flood, a wannabe writer who recently moved to the city and works as a night stocking manager and champion "turkey bowler") at a local Safeway. She has him perform tasks during the day as her vampirism forces her unconscious except after sundown. As Jody and Tommy begin their life together and begin falling in love, they discover that a recent string of mysterious murders may be the work of the vampire who attacked Jody. To get to the bottom of the matter, they recruit "the Animals", Tommy's crew of stockers from the supermarket, as well as an eccentric street person and his faithful dogs known as "The Emperor."

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
The book is a comedy about the birth of the son of Satan, the coming of the End Times and the attempts of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley to avert them, having become accustomed to their comfortable situations in the human world. A subplot features the gathering of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—War, Famine, Pollution (Pestilence having retired in 1936 following the discovery of penicillin), and Death—

Then We Came to the End Joshua Ferris
For anyone who has ever worked in an office, hating everything and everyone in it, yet fell apart when it was time to leave -- this book is for you. Heartbreaking, yet hysterically funny, Then We Came to the End is the definitive novel about the contemporary American workplace.

Agreed.   I need to re-read that one, it's been so long since I've read it.

And Bloodsucking Friends looks good as well.  (Well, just about anything Moore has out has been good.)   I haven't read this one, but I read the one that is supposedly after,  You Suck, a Love Story.

I've had Confederacy of Dunces sitting on my bookshelf for years. I need to rip through it before they make a movie, which is the script every funny person in Hollywood is dying to make.

Loved the whole Bloodsucking Fiends series (and Dirty Job, which was kind of integrated for a second) and I would totally re-read anything by Christopher Moore. I voted for Good Omens because it sounded Moore-ish (heh) and if Jason thought it was funny I probably will too. I think.

Library does not have Bloodsucking Friends.  I went ahead and either checked everything else out or placed a hold request since I'm at the library.

Just picked up Then We Came to the End at the library.  IDK why I feel a need to read every book even nominated, but doing that has led me to a couple of authors that I like and probably wouldn't have come across for a good while on my own.

IDK who's idea this whole book club thing was, but if you're ever in Louisville, I will buy you a drink.
